The Hooded Woman
Five years had past since Ezra had been dropped off at the forgotten children orphanage. Now five years old she was an inquisitive little girl that loved to be outside. She loved to feel the soft green grass beneath her finger tips.
Right now the children of the orphanage were enjoying some playtime outside. The sun shined brightly and the children laughed and played a game of tag.
Ezra loved being by herself. She loved to count the rocks and create shapes out of them. She sat on a tree trunk that had fallen down. She loved to watch the beautiful butterflies flutter about.
Ezra had always been a shy child. She didn't talk very much and she was always in her own little world. Living in the orphanage her whole life all she had was a gold locket with a picture of her mother.
Ezra loved to look at the picture and point out how similar they looked. She loved to compare her dark hair to her mother's and her bright green eyes. She wondered how her mother smelled, did she smell of sweet flowers or honey dew?
She would stare at the locket for hours. And at night she would kiss it and pray upon it. She knew her mother had to be out there somewhere. She had hoped that her mother did not forget her.
Little Ezra sat against the tree with her eyes closed. The other children could be heard from the distance as she sat in the shade. She wasn't one to play all day in the sun.
"Psst... Ezra... over here..."
Ezra's eyes flew open at the sudden voice calling her name. She turned her head back and forth looking for the voice.
"Over here my darling"...
The voice pleaded. It was soft and warm and inviting. When she turned to look beyond the tree she saw a women. She wore a dark cloak, the only thing visible was her pale face and her bright green eyes.
She looked exactly like the picture in the locket.
"It's me.... I'm your mama.... please... don't be scared..." the women pleaded. Little Ezra stood up checking to make sure mother Margaret the women in charge of the orphanage wasn't looking.
"Are you really my mama"? Little Ezra asked her small face looking confused. She leaned against the tree not taking any steps closer toward the women.
"Yes... I'm your mama... you see... that's my locket... look..." the women took off the hood of the dark cloak. Ezra opened the locket taking a peek at the picture inside and then looking up.
She's the women in the locket! Ezra's face broke out into a smile. She reached for the women who instantly took her in her arms. "I knew you would come for me. Mama I prayed, I prayed to Mr. moon and you came"!
Nora placed light kisses against her daughter's forehead. She had grown so big and she looked healthy. She was so relieved to see that her baby girl had not been adopted.
"Mama missed you so much so very... much" she tried to hold back her sobs. Little Ezra placed her tiny hands against her mother's wet cheeks.
"Why are you crying mama. I'm okay see" she got off her mother's lap to give a twirl. Nora couldn't help but giggle, her baby looked more and more like her father.
"Mama are you here to take me with you". Little Ezra asked climbing back into her mother's lap. The smile dropped from Nora's face. She was still not financially stable as she had been on the run for the past five years.
Word had gotten out to Ezra's father that she had a baby. He had come in search for her to find out the truth. He had found out where she had been living with her friend and he had demanded she hand over her daughter.
Nora knew he was furious. So much so that he had threatened to kill her mother who was still working for them. After all these years, Nora had thought he loved her. But he had been brainwashed by his family.
Nora was an Aquakinesis. She could control water. While her lover was a Pyrokinesis, he controlled fire. It was forbidden for the two the to mix which was why she had been banished from the mansion.
He had made so promises. After she had written letters to him countless of times asking for help. She had told him of how she had been struggling. But he never answered her letters, leaving her to believe he could careless about her or their child.
"I can't take you with me right now baby. But mama will come back for you okay. I need you to be a good girl for mama okay". Nora cooed pushing her daughter's dark hair back.
"But I want to go with you now mama. Please pretty please". Ezra begged her large green eyes peering up at her.
"Tell you what. Mama will come back tomorrow okay. I promise my love mama will be for you always". Years welled up in Nora's eyes as she rocked her daughter in her arms.
"EZRA... WHERE ARE YOU HIDING"! Ezra heard mother Margaret calling her name. Her mother pulled her off her lap before giving her a slight push out of the trees.
"Mama will be back tomorrow okay. Don't tell anyone you saw me and remember... mama loves you always". Nora put her hood on before disappearing behind the trees.
With her head down in sadness she made her way out of the trees. Margaret saw Ezra walk out from behind the trees her heart finally calling down.
"Ezra, just what were doing behind there. You know it's dangerous to lurk in the trees! Come it's lunch time" Maragret scolded.
Margaret tugged on her hand. While little Ezra stared back at the empty trees.
