Forty-Six
Walking slowly back to work, Rohan wondered what to do about Sally. The rage he had experienced was more intense than any he had ever felt in his entire life. He didn't understand it because he'd had worse done to him.
The force of hatred he felt for Sally when Annie told him what she had done scared him. It was because of Annie. She had hurt Annie. Rohan wanted to kill Sally for it. This thought made him chuckle. Annie and his feelings for her were changing him. Never had he ever wanted to be more protective or stronger. After all he'd been through it had taken a small kitten of a woman to kick start his, Warrior Gene. He chuckled again and shook his head. It was about bloody time.
Rohan wasn't ready for confrontation but if Sally continued along these lines, he knew he'd have to be prepared to deal with it. Not the way he had dealt with it last time. Mercer was right, Sally could have caused him a lot of trouble if she had reported him. Rohan wondered why she hadn't. He just didn't want anything to do with them. Sally had done this to get at him so if he didn't react to it then she couldn't win.
Annie said she didn't believe what Sally said so the important thing was proving to Annie she was who he cared about. Rohan decided to avoid Sally and Mercer at all costs and focus on Annie, show her how he really felt. He would ask Annie out again and see what happened.
Sid had suggested taking her to the park. Harry had suggested swimming at South Bank. Swimming meant taking his clothes off or most of them and he couldn't deal with that, but walking in the park meant having to talk more freely and Annie was sure to ask him questions. Rohan thought some more. He could take her to the, Sciencentre, at the Queensland Museum, though it might bore her. It was a great place and had lots of interesting things to do and see. No... Annie wouldn't get bored, he was sure of it, so with his mind made up he mounted the stairs.
As he passed the door to reception, he caught Sally looking his way. She waved to him with a big grin on her face. Rohan wanted to ignore her but if he did, she would know Annie had said something to him. He didn't want Sally to be aware that he knew, so he nodded and held his hand up in salute as he walked on by.
"Rohan!" Sally rushed to the doorway. He turned around as she gushed out the words, "Did you have a good lunch?"
Forcing a grin on his face, Rohan replied, "Yes. I had a really great lunch."
"Oh."
He caught a glimpse of confusion or disappointment on her face then her face lit up once more as she said, "That's good. I should have paid for you; to thank you for Wednesday and to make up for you missing lunch."
"No need, Sally. I can buy my own lunch," Rohan said with determination as he turned to walk away.
"So, you went to the café then?"
Rohan guessed what she was trying to pry out of him. He grinned and nodded. "I go there every day."
"That waitress, Annie... she really is your girlfriend?"
Peering at her in thought, Rohan figured she wasn't going to be put off and he didn't want to tell a lie which might come back at him. "I don't see it's any of your business, Sally." With that he strode away before she could say anything else.
Sally wasn't happy when she went back to her desk. She slumped down on her chair, rage broiling inside of her.
"So did he go there?" Mercer asked demurely.
"Yes, he went there." Sally glared over at Mercer. "Either the bitch never said anything or he's hiding what did happen."
Bliss danced in Mercer's mind at the thought of Sally being duped but she decided to act supportive and asked, "What are you going to do?"
"I don't know, Mercer!"
"Well, she must be his girlfriend. They've probably been together for a long time. If I was you, I'd probably forget about him, Sally. He's an idiot anyway."
"Will you stop harping at me, Mercer?" Sally blared. "I've got more important things to think about than Rohan Wayland!"
She didn't.
Rohan Wayland and his hands wouldn't stop intruding in her dreams, which made her continually think about him through the day. No matter who she was with or what she was doing it was Rohan Wayland who she fantasized about.
"You're wasting your time, Sally." Mercer smirked; her soul lit with intent to piss Sally off. "He's never going to dump her for you and you need to be aware of that."
Sally tilted her head and lifted the corner of her mouth before she turned her focus onto her computer screen.
Do you think Sally will give up?
