Analyzing Informative Text: Perfectly Imperfect

What is your idea of a "perfect human body?" Does it mean you are really tall, or does it mean you have flexible body movements? Whatever way you see a "perfect" body, there are many aspects to consider that would make a "perfect" body, including the imperfections. Donna Bozzone, a biology professor, has an interesting viewpoint on this subject. They used examples, descriptive language, counter arguments, and evidence to show their position. We can analyze, and maybe even learn a thing or two from Donna Bozzone's "Perfectly Imperfect."

How did Bozzone organize their text? The text structure of Perfectly Imperfect is an informative text structure. Using examples and multimedia to inform and visually show their information. They use descriptive language to describe the athletes in the article, saying that, "His ankles are (reportedly) double jointed, and thus extremely flexible. And his feet are big... So Phelps' legs act like flippers when he swims." This descriptive language helped me identify what kind of structure the author used. It helped me as a reader by the pictures and descriptions helped me visualize the author's viewpoint. That is how and what text structure they used.

Speaking of viewpoints, the author has an interesting position when it comes to the perfect body. They believe that, "In biology, there is no such thing as one ideal body. In fact, variation in all living things, including us, is the rule. This variation is essential for our survival." This statement shows the author's viewpoint; that there is no such thing as a perfect body, and that our variation and flaws make our perfections. Their purpose in writing the article is to inform people about variations in people and animals and convince people that those flaws in our bodies -like double jointed bones- give us that "perfect" body. I agree with this statement -every one of us is unique, and having a body shape that adjusts to an individual's lifestyle is essential. When the author used examples in the text, saying that rabbits with a certain color of fur helps them camouflage from predators, it helped me understand their topic. This will also help other readers understand their perspective.

Finally, the author distinguishes their viewpoint by using evidence and examples to support their reasoning. Instead of blandly telling the reader that there is no such thing as a perfect body, they showed that having an imperfect body can give advantages in sports and survival. They gave counterarguments to acknowledge different thoughts, and used various rebuttals to make their position correct. For example, the author used rhetorical questions to make the reader not only interested, but also aware of a different perspective and the author's own. "... da Vinci depicted his idea of the perfectly sized and proportioned male body. But is this really what a perfect body looks like? And if it's perfect, does that make every other type of body flawed? Or maybe those are the wrong questions and the idea of a "perfect" body is actually what's flawed." This sentence helped give me different perspectives on the topic, but it also gave me the author's own perspective.

In conclusion, the author gives a strong and clear viewpoint for the reader in "Perfectly Imperfect." They used concrete examples and evidence, along with a mix of multimedia, so readers can understand the position of the author. Would you agree with Bozzone? Do you believe that imperfections can reveal our perfections in life?
