Chapter 3

^^^^^ Pic of Kieran (minus the tattoos) :)

He was lying on the hospital bed. He looked so fragile. He was pale, his face was all bruised up and he looked tired. Despite this, he was staring at his phone. I knocked on the door, getting his attention. He looked up at me briefly but looked back down at his phone. I closed the door behind me.

"Can I come in?" I asked.

"Well you're in here already." He kissed his teeth. Well that was a better response than I was expecting. I thought he was gonna tell me to get out or cuss me out or something. But he didn't.

"I'm sorry, Kieran. About everything, I just got so mad at you, like, I just lost it. You got me so angry the way you were talking to me but I understand I didn't need to pop off on you like that. I'm sorry." I sighed scratching my eyebrow. Kieran didn't say anything and I stood by the door awkwardly watching him playing on his phone. I saw him smiling behind his phone.

"What? Are you just gonna stand there?" He pat the space on the bed beside him and I walked over. Cautiously, I sat on the very edge of the bed and stared at the wall. From the corner of my eye, I saw him sit up fully. He reached around my stomach and pulled me further onto the small bed. I looked at him astonished.

"I'm not gonna bite." He smirked. I was perplexed as to why he was smiling so much.

"Aren't you in pain? Your mum said I broke one of your ribs." I looked at my fingers and played with them.

"Not that much. They gave me some mosphine? Metaphine?"

"Morphine?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Yeah that. I was close."

"Metaphine is not close." I burst out laughing.

"I'm glad you find that funny." He looked at me with a straight face and I stopped laughing abruptly.

"You're smart, you should be, like, a doctor or something." He added.

"Ew, no." I shook my head.

"Why not?"

"Don't want to."

"Well, what do you want to do?" he asked. I shrugged and turned to him.

"Aren't you mad at me?" I frowned. He smiled and bit his bottom lip. I noticed he did that a lot.

"Nah. You're like one of the only people that have stood up to me when I come at them. I like that. And you're kinda a good fighter too." He laughed. I smiled.

"Thanks. But I'm sorry about taking it so far, I didn't mean to-"

"Stop saying sorry. You had the right to pop off on me like you did. Sorry about your face." He rubbed the back of his neck, looking at me.

"I'll be fine, it's just a lot of swelling." I shrugged. He nodded and looked at his phone as it vibrated. He smiled.

"Is that Rianne?" I asked. He looked up at me.

"Uh-"

"I guess not." I cut him off. "D'you even really like her?" I asked.

"Yeah, course I do!" He answered quickly.

"Okay, okay! I was just asking." I narrowed my eyes at him and sighed. It became extremely awkward in a matter of seconds and I stood up. I looked down at him.

"Well I better get going." I smiled.

"What? Why? You just got here." He looked up at me frowning.

"Yeah I know but I just made things awkward so I'd rather not stay. And why'd you seem sad about that?" I didn't like to beat around the bush.

"Nah you didn't make things awkward. I kinda enjoyed your company and I'm not quite sure I want our little session to end." He smiled. I stopped smiling.

"Session? What are you, a therapist?" I asked nonchalantly. He laughed.

"No, but like it was refreshing and, and ugh I just said it okay man! Sheesh turning it into a big deal, stressing man out." He dragged a hand down his swollen face and I laughed.

"Mate I was joking." I walked to the door and looked back at him, smiling slightly.

"Aw so you're actually going?" He pouted and I scoffed.

"Duh. Bye Kieran." I put my hand on the door handle.

"Ah well bye. Send Rianne two kisses for me." He eyed me up and down.

"And if she's got a bum like yours, I must be a lucky guy." My eyes widened in shock. I didn't know if he meant for me to hear that or not but I grew uncomfortable as soon as he said that.

"Oh well that's definitely my cue to leave." I muttered. I opened the door and stepped out.

"Bye Kieran, get well soon." I called without looking behind me.

I walked towards my mum who was typing away on her phone; she was probably texting my dad. But I didn't really care. She looked up at me.

"I'm guessing everything went well? You're smiling." She stood up, putting her phone in her pocket. I touched my face. Rah she wasn't lying.

"Rah I am smiling." I shook my head and replaced the smile with a frown.

"Can we go now?" I asked. She nodded.

It was about 20:30 when we got home and I went straight to the living room. Rianne was watching Jersey Shore.

"Hey." I breathed. She looked up at me but looked back at the TV almost immediately and kissed her teeth. I rolled my eyes.

"Kieran sends you two kisses by the way." She looked up at me.

"You saw him?"

"Yeah, mum took me to the hospital to say sorry to him. We talked for a little bit but I think we're cool now." I decided not to mention his comment about my bum.

"That's nice. But I'm still pissed off at you." She turned back to the TV and I sighed.

"Ay, watch your mouth." Mum came and stood beside me.

"Hey mum." She said, still looking at the screen.

"You not gonna look at me?" Asked mum.

"Nope. I can't miss a second of Jersey Shore." She replied. Mum laughed and went to go and join her on the couch. I left them and I headed to the bedroom. Tina sent me a message asking how I was and I took a picture of my face, showing how swollen it was and the slight bruising.

I put my phone in charge, took off my trainers and hoodie, untied my hair and lay on our bed. Yeah, we shared a bed. I ended up falling asleep and only woke up when I heard my name being called.

"RIAH! RIAH!" I opened my eyes and the room was dark. I unlocked my phone and it was nearly midnight. I sat up.

"RIAH DON'T MAKE ME CALL YOU AGAIN! RIAH!" My dad was calling me. I got up quickly and flung open the bedroom door. I hated when my sleep got interrupted. Storming out of my room I walked across the landing towards the stairs.

"RIAH!" He roared. I kissed my teeth and walked down the stairs.

"What?" I shouted back. He looked like he had just gotten in from work as he was putting his coat on the coat rack by the door.

"What is this I hear about you getting yourself arrested?" He shouted. I sighed and turned around trotting back up the stairs.

"Mum's already done all the shouting so you don't need to."

"Where are you going? I believe I'm talking to-"

"I'm going back to sleep."

"I'm talking to you."

"I'm going back to sleep!" I said raising my voice. Before I knew it, my hair was being pulled extremely hard, forcing me back down the stairs. Dad turned me around.

"Don't walk away when I'm talking to you-"

"Let go of my hair!" I screwed him.

"No. You're gonna listen to every word I have to say about your atrocious behaviour."

"My atrocious behaviour? Look at what you're doing right now!" I don't know how he could stand and say that, not realising his own faults. Then he started talking again and his breath hit me. I scrunched up my face momentarily.

"You're drunk." I muttered.

"What'd you say?"

"I said you're fucking drunk." I spat. He stared at me before releasing my hair and stepping back. I felt a sharp stinging pain to my cheek and my head was turned. It took me a little while to understand what just happened but things got pretty clear when he started shouting again.

"You better get them swear words out of your damn mouth!"

"So you're gonna fucking slap me? Because of a simple swear word?" This nigga was unbelievable. I scoffed.

"Mum!" I called. She could come and sort her husband out. I started walking up the stairs again. He grabbed me and held me against the wall.

"What did I say about you walking away when I'm talking to you!" He pressed my shoulders into the wall.

"Dad, get off." I said through gritted teeth.

"Mum!" I shouted.

"You're not going anywhere. I can't believe you would even think about fighting, especially with Kieran."

"Dad, you are hurting me." I said, emphasising every syllable. He ignored me and continued talking. I pushed at his hard chest.

"Dad get off! Mum, dad's drunk!" I shouted. I pushed him one more time and he stumbled back. I rubbed my shoulders and glared at him. He started laughing.

"What so you want to fight me? You wanna fight me now?" He asked. I walked away from him, towards the kitchen.

"Kieran wasn't enough so you have to come and fight me too? If you want to fight, let's fight Riah." He turned me around to face him.

"I don't want to fight." I sighed, exasperated. I turned again but he grabbed my arm.

"Nah, you wanna fight."

"I just said I don't want to! Are you deaf?" I was pulling my arm but he had a tight grip on it.

"No I am not deaf. You want to fight."

"How many times- I don't want to fight; let go." He held onto my arm grinning.

"Let go!" I repeated.

"Let it go, let it go!" He sang, laughing wildly. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a smaller but not miniature version of Skyy Vodka. He took a large gulp of the alcohol and tried to get me to drink some.

"Come on, Riah, have some! Live a little!" He exclaimed, holding the bottle by my lips. I objected, pushing him away, but he was still holding me arm.

"Ugh, dad let go! For fuck sake!" I pushed him away multiple times as he then tried to kiss me.

"Dad no!" I shouted, pulling away and accidently slapping him in the process. He let go of me almost immediately and I moved away from him. He suddenly threw the bottle at me but I ducked and it smashed as it hit the door of the storage unit under the stairs. As I stood up straight, I looked over at him. He looked beyond pissed. He breathed heavily as he looked at me intently.

I had already calculated the move he was going to make and turned to run into the kitchen. With his long legs, he got to me before I could get into the kitchen.

He threw me into the wall and I yelped, reaching up behind my back to caress my aching shoulder blade. He marched over and pulled me up by my collar. I didn't have time to brace myself before he got to the punches. I tell you, I have never been punched so hard in my life. He pushed me to the floor and continued hitting me. I cried as he did so. I tried to fight him back but that only seemed to make him hit me harder. He stood up sweating, looming over me as I lay on the floor. I looked up at him and he decided to kick me in the stomach. I curled up into a foetal position as my stomach was riddled with pain. He turned and started walking away.

"Don't fucking look at me." he muttered. He turned slightly and pointed a finger at me.

"You better learn to respect your adults and do as your fucking told. Clean this shit up. And turn off the light when you're done." He snarled. I stayed immobile on the floor, watching him disappear upstairs. It was from here that I started to hate my father.

I moaned in pain and after a few minutes of being curled up, I got on my hands and knees. I groaned, feeling more pain and I breathed heavily. I saw my blood on the floor and spots kept on coming as the blood dripped from my nose. I was in immense pain and I could hardly move.

Not wanting to sleep downstairs, I heaved myself up off the floor, crying a little as I did so.

I made the trek up the stairs, using the banister to steady me. I stood outside the bedroom door and made sure to wipe my eyes and nose before I entered the room. I didn't want Rianne to ask any questions if she was still awake.

I opened the door slowly and slid into the room quietly. I climbed into our bed and lay on my side. I started crying again.

"Ray, you alright? What's wrong?" I heard Rianne ask behind me. I knew she'd still be awake.

"I'm fine." I lied.

"Are you sure? It sounded like you were crying." She waited for me to answer but I couldn't as I started silently crying.

"Ray?" She was hesitant.

"I'm okay." I reassured her. I don't think she believed me but she didn't pry any further... For about 30 seconds.

"Did daddy do something? Or say something?" She asked. I pressed my eyes closed.

"I heard him calling you." She added.

"Rianne I said I'm fine, I'm good. It's nothing so just leave it okay?" I snapped. She didn't say anything after than and I soon found myself drifting off. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
