Chapter 18
2nd March 2012
After eating, I resided to the bedroom. I put my phone in charge and laid in bed hugging Melvin as I waited.
Rianne came into the room and stopped when she saw me. She shut the door behind her.
"Hey." she smiled. I didn't look at her and didn't reply.
"I said hi." She spoke again. I don't know why she thought I would speak to her. She didn't deserve my attention. At least not until she apologised. She didn't like to apologise so I wasn't even sure I was going to get one in all honesty. She sat on the edge of the bed.
"So, how was your day?" She asked.
I stayed staring at the wall.
"I heard Rob picked you up, I bet that was fun." She tried to make conversation again.
I blocked out whatever it was she was saying. Just hearing her voice was making me angry. I got up, unplugged my phone and walked out of the room, Melvin clutched to my chest.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"I wanted to talk to you." her voice got quieter as I walked further from the room. I shut myself in one of the guest bedrooms and locked the door. I was alone in this house. That's great isn't it? To feel left out in your own home. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I was constantly upset in that house and I could feel myself deteriorating.
I turned my phone on and I felt like crying. I had tons of missed calls from Isaiah and an overwhelming number of texts. I felt so bad because I hadn't been able to talk to him for at least a week and I knew he was worried about me.
I quickly called him. He answered almost instantly, as if he had been waiting for my call.
"Riah?" hearing his voice brought me on the verge of tears. He sounded so desperate and broken.
"Isaiah." I sat at the end of the bed. I heard him sigh.
"Baby, are you okay? What happened? I've been trying to call you, you haven't been picking up. And I've been texting you. I swear I've been going crazy out of my mind, I was so worried. Shall I come and get you; are you okay?" I didn't like hearing him so worried. I could only imagine how Kacey must have felt. She must have felt like I had abandoned her. I sat on the phone with him, explaining everything that had happened in great detail. I was a mess, I couldn't stop crying. I couldn't be more thankful that he stayed on the phone with me.
He was more than furious by the time I was done telling him everything. He wanted to come and get me but I told him not to because Michael would know I told and he would hurt me again. I could hear him fumbling around as he got ready to leave his house. He said he was coming and I couldn't stop him. I said I wouldn't be able to go with him and he said it was fine, he'd just stay the night. I started crying all over again. He cared so much.
"Don't you have college tomorrow?"
"Bun college. You need me, I have to be there for you." He replied.
"Won't you get in trouble?"
"It doesn't matter. Why does it sound like you don't want me to come?"
"I do. I just don't want you getting hurt." I confessed.
"He won't see me, b. Don't worry so much. And even if he does, I won't hesitate to protect you, you're my girl."
"But, it's cold and raining. Won't you get cold and wet?"
"Riah are you seriously asking me that? Rain or shine, I'm coming for you." I heard him close the front door and he hung up so I couldn't try to deter him. I sighed.
I laid down and held Melvin to my chest. What did I do for God to bless me with such a perfect partner?
As it drew nearer to 22:00, the more anxious and afraid I got. This was typically Michael's drinking hour, where he would go ham drinking. Maybe having Isaiah over without my parents' permission wasn't such a great idea.
Soon enough, I received a text from him saying he was outside. My heart was beating so fast. I was so scared but I was excited at the same time. I slipped out of the room and slowly walked downstairs. I didn't want to make any noise.
I peeked into the living room to see both Michael and Michelle knocked out on the couch. I tiptoed back over to the door and unlocked it as quietly as I could. I took a deep breath as I opened the door. I first spotted Kacey. Her bright pink jacket made her stand out. I gasped and she flung herself into me as I crouched down to hug her. I hugged her as tight as I could with one arm, fighting the tears that wanted to escape. I kissed her on the forehead, repeatedly saying that I was sorry and that I loved her. I kissed her again and looked up at the love of my life. I couldn't stop my tears this time and dove straight into his chest. He enclosed me in a hug so tight. He rubbed my back as we hugged. He knew I was hurting.
"Shh baby girl, I'm here now." His voice was music to my ears. We hugged for a long time. He held my face in his hand and used his thumb to wipe my tears.
"I missed you so much." I sobbed.
"I missed you too, babe."
"I didn't think you would actually come." I whispered. He cocked his head to the side.
"What did I tell you in McDonalds?"
"You said you've got me." I nodded.
"That's right, I got you. I always got you. I'm always gonna be here for you no matter what. I love you too much to let anything get in the way of what we have, do you understand?" He held me at arms length. I nodded.
"You're wifey. I love you."
"I love you too." We kissed before I remembered Kacey was there and stopped him from kissing me harder. I smiled and gave him a peck. I locked the front door and led them up the stairs into the guest room. I locked the door.
He put the duffel bag he was carrying by the side of the bed and took off his trainers and coat. He took off Kacey's coat and hung it up in the closet.
"Your place is nice." Isaiah commented, looking around the room.
"Thanks." I nodded. I sat down on the bed and Isaiah sat next to me. Kacey took off her shoes and with his help, got onto the bed. She began to jump up and down on the bed as Isaiah and I watched her.
"She missed you so much." He said. I turned to him.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be." He held my hand and kissed it. He smiled.
"What?"
"I missed you so much, baby girl." he used his thumb to rub small circles on the back of my hand. I smiled and scooted closer to him. I got brave and tucked my bottom lip into my mouth as I slid up onto his lap. He scooted his head back, staring at me with humour before grinning and pulling me into him. I wrapped my free arm around his neck and he rest his arm on my waist.
I smiled as he kissed my cheek.
"I can't wait to have a life with you." he whispered. I heaved in a breath.
"Me either, babe." I replied. He gave me a kiss.
"I can't wait till I'm 18." I sighed.
"How come?"
"I'll be able to move out and get a place of my own."
"You mean get a place of our own right?" He raised his eyebrow. I giggled.
"Yeah, babe. Of course."
"Okay good." He smiled.
"First I need to get a job." I nodded.
"Nah baby, don't even worry about that."
"I want to earn my own money, not mooch off of my husband."
"Ooh so I'm hubby now? I like that."
"Yes, in spirit." I giggled. He pecked my cheek.
"I just want to get out of here." I shook my head.
"Come back with me then." He stared at me.
"Isaiah, you know I can't." I sighed. He gave me a small smile.
"I know, I was just playing." He held me tighter.
"You don't know how much you mean to me." He whispered, rubbing the tip of his nose on my face, before gently biting my earlobe.
"Isaiah." I gasped.
"We're not alone, babe." I looked him in the eye. He nodded.
"The next time we're alone it's gonna go down." he grinned. I laughed.
"You're so silly."
"I'm serious." He blinked. I laughed again.
"Cool."
I walked to the bathroom and allowed Isaiah to help me change into pyjamas. I didn't want Kacey to see any of the bruises on my ribs or anywhere else. He changed into his and helped Kacey brush her teeth before changing her into her pyjamas too. We got into bed, Kacey in the middle of us. We talked for a bit as Kacey began to fall asleep.
"Have you started looking for jobs?" He asked me.
"Not yet."
"I can help you if you'd like. I mean it'd be a while before you could work because of your arm but if you want to start looking I can help with that."
"Aww, really?"
"Yeah, babe. You could even work with me if you'd like. I'm sure my boss wouldn't mind." He suggested.
"I don't want you to get sick of me."
"I could never get sick of you. Plus it would mean we would see each other more and spend more time with each other."
"Would you want that?"
"Of course! I hate being away from my baby, I feel like I'm suffering from withdrawal when I'm away from you." He stared into my eyes. My heart melted. I felt the same way.
"I think I will work with you." I nodded. He smiled.
"Perfect." He leaned over a sleeping Kacey and kissed me tenderly.
"I love you." he stared into my eyes as he hovered above me.
"I love you too babe. So so much." he lay back down and stretched his arm across Kacey. He held my hand in his.
"Goodnight, baby."
"Goodnight."
I woke up in the same position I slept in. I looked down to see my hand still in Isaiah's. I smiled. I panicked as I realised Kacey wasn't in bed with us anymore and shot up, eliciting pain from my sore ribs. I yelped and lay back down.
"Baby, what's wrong? Take it easy. You can't be making fast movements like that." Isaiah sat up.
"Kacey." I was on the brink of tears.
"She's right here, don't worry." He helped me to sit up slowly. There she was on the floor by his side of the bed, playing with some toys. I sighed and ran a hand through my curls. She looked up at me and smiled.
Isaiah reached down and picked her up, sitting her on his lap. He hugged her and kissed her cheek.
"Good morning, Kacey." He said to her.
"Yeah, good morning Kace." I looked at her.
"What do you say when someone says 'good morning'?"
"Good morning." She looked at him.
"Good morning, mummy." She scooted over to me and kissed my cheek.
Isaiah wanted to have a lie in. It was only 06:25 so I could understand why. He got his laptop out of his bag and put a film on for Kacey to watch. He snuggled up to me and I lay on him. He was so warm. I sighed. I would leave with them today if I could.
Isaiah and I conked out like 15 minutes into the Bee Movie. We were so tired.
We got up at about 09:00. We were pretty sure Kacey was starving. We all brushed our teeth and showered, then got dressed. I didn't realise how hard it was gonna be to do basic things without using my other arm. Isaiah basically had to dress me, not that I had any problem with that.
As I finished getting ready, there was a knock on the door. I froze and Isaiah and Kacey went to the bathroom to hide.
"Riah, I know you're upset with me and your dad and your sister but you've got to come out of this room sometime. Rianne wanted to take the day off today to spend some time with you but your father didn't let her so she's gone in. Maybe another day she can stay with you." She called through the door.
"I've got to go but I've left £30 in the kitchen if you want to order anything later or whatever." She sighed before I heard her heels on the floor as she walked away.
I heard the front door close and headed to the window to make sure she left. She got in her car and reversed into the road. I watched as she drove away.
"She's gone." I called.
Kacey and Isaiah emerged from the bathroom smiling at me.
"What?" I looked at them weirdly.
"We've got the house to ourselves." He grinned, picking up Kacey.
"Well-"
"Woohoo!" He yelled. He unlocked the door and sped out of the room. I watched as he ran down the stairs, Kacey giggling.
"Rah your house is biiiig!" He yelled. I shook my head and laughed. Grabbing my phone, I headed downstairs.
I watched as my two favourite people wandered around, exploring the house.
"This is a really nice house. Your parents must be mad rich." He looked at me. I shrugged and told him what they did for a living. He nodded.
We went into the kitchen and Isaiah sat Kacey at the breakfast bar. I took the £30 mum had left for me and put it in my pocket.
We decided to just have cereal for breakfast. Isaiah had to help me with that too. My ribs were making me extra slow and using just the one arm was like torture. After eating we made our way to the living room.
I put another film on for Kacey as Isaiah and I sat on the sofa. He pulled me onto his lap and I smiled at him.
"What time is your family getting back?" He asked.
"School finishes at ten past three so Rianne should get back at maybe 15:30. My parents will get back a lot later, between 19:00 and 21:00."
"Good." He smiled. Suddenly a knock came to the door and I froze. I looked up at Isaiah who was equally as shocked as I was. I told them to hide in the powder room until whoever was at the door was gone. Isaiah didn't really want to, he didn't like that we were doing things in secret.
I looked out of the window and saw it was Rob at the door. I let out a breath of air and opened the door.
"Riah!" He exclaimed, beaming down at me.
"Hey, dad." I mirrored his smile.
He stepped into the house and I closed the door behind him. He gave me a quick hug and I led him to the living room. He sat down.
"I want you to stay at my house."
"Rob-"
"Even if it's only for a night. I can't let you stay here. It's not safe."
"I can't."
"I'll make up something, tell Mike I want you and Rianne to stay with us. I'll tell him we miss having you."
"I'll be fine."
"Ray, stop making it seem like everything is going to be okay when he keeps hurting you! I can't trust him! I swear, if he tries it again..." he stared down at me with tears in his eyes. My current situation was really hurting him. I sighed and wrapped my arm around him.
"One day you'll understand why I stay."
He let go of me.
"I'm not sure I will. If anything happens and I know I could have prevented it-"
"Stop thinking like that. I can handle myself."
"With a broken arm? Yeah, right." He scoffed.
"Well she's not alone." We both turned to see Isaiah in the doorway. My eyes grew wide and Rob stood up.
"What is he doing?" I thought to myself.
"And who are you?" Rob glared at him, taking a step towards him.
"No, he's no one." I stood in front of him. I knew I hurt Isaiah by saying that. I was just scared.
"No one?" Rob questioned.
"Isaiah." He stuck out his hand for Rob to shake.
"Riah's boyfriend." He waited for a shocked Rob to shake his hand. Rob was uncertain of what to say. He was silent, looking from me to Isaiah.
"Boyfriend? Since when?" He looked at me.
"Well we met at the foster home." I told him.
"And your relationship is serious?"
"Yes sir, as serious as can be." Isaiah spoke before I could.
I saw Kacey peeking from around the corner, as did the guys.
"And this-" Isaiah smiled.
"Is Kacey." He picked her up.
"Our daughter." I almost choked on my own saliva when he said that. Rob looked from Isaiah to Kacey then to me again. He wasn't angry anymore, just confused. He ran a hand over his hair and sighed.
"What?" He sat down and put his face in his hands.
"She's not my real daughter." I blabbed, attempting to make what he heard less dramatic.
"No of course not." Isaiah scoffed.
"But we're planning on adopting her when we're old enough." He added.
"Oh." Rob still hadn't looked up yet.
"So I'm guessing Michael doesn't know these two are here?"
"No." I shook my head.
"But they're going home today. Before my parents get home." I told him. He sighed and looked up at me.
"Does he know everything?" He asked me. I nodded.
"Sir, I promised Riah I'd try my best to protect her. I want her to be safe just as much as you do, maybe even more."
"Now hold up little boy-" He stepped closer to Isaiah.
"Rob." I shook my head. They both cared about me a lot and their masculinity was making them clash a tad bit as they both wanted to protect me.
"Sorry. Look I don't know you and I just want the best for my little girl." Rob told him.
"I completely understand. I love Riah to death and I don't want any harm to come to her. I wouldn't have made the trip down here last night if I didn't care about her."
We sat on the couch and Isaiah joined us, wrapping his arm around my waist and holding my hand.
We talked about my living situation. Rob made it clear that if Michael did something I should leave the house immediately and call him and Isaiah. This way I could go to stay with either of them if something happened. Rob told me to keep at least a tenner on my oyster in case I wouldn't be able to stay at his, I would always have enough on my oyster to get trains to stay with Isaiah. Isaiah made me pack a bag with two days worth of clothes and essentials just in case I needed to leave the house in a hurry. They made me keep my purse, oyster card and passport in my pouch with some other small things like lip balm.
I had to make them my favourite contacts.
At the end of our talk, I think Rob actually really liked Isaiah. They did have the same interest; me.
"It's nearly quarter to three, the Mrs is going to be wondering why I'm not home yet so I should get going." Rob stood up.
"And unless you're staying another night, I suggest you and Kacey get ready to leave before Rianne gets back from school." He told Isaiah. He nodded and stood up. He put his hand forward for Rob to shake.
I saw the small smile on Rob's face and he shook it hard.
"Nice meeting you son, I wish it wasn't like this though."
"Yeah, nice meeting you too, sir."
"Please. You're looking after my little girl, call me Rob." He smiled. Isaiah grinned.
"Getting in good with the pops." He winked at me making me giggle. Rob took me in his arms.
"Look after yourself. If you need anything Ray, anything at all, call me. Please." I nodded. He kissed my forehead.
"I love you so much, Ray."
"I love you too, Rob. I'll call you if something happens, I promise."
He said bye to Kacey and I saw him out. I sighed and turned around.
"He's a good man." Isaiah said. I nodded.
"The best."
