Chapter 1

I love my twin sister. It's always been the two of us, together, inseparable. See that picture right there? Yeah, that's us when we were 5 years old. I'm the one in the red. You see that bracelet on my sister's wrist? I made that for her. We made a pact that we'd care for and protect each other forever. We'd never broken that promise.

Not until now.

6th February 2012

So it was Year 11, we had just turned 16- oh I haven't introduced myself properly. I'm Riah Mckenzie. My twin sister is Rianne. My parents were very inventive weren't they? If you didn't notice, I was being sarcastic. My mum's name is Michelle, and my dad's name is Michael. Funny right? I'm more of a tomboy and my sister is a stereotypical girl. I'm 19 right now and my life isn't all that interesting. Anymore. An event happened which changed EVERYTHING. But I'll get to that later. Anyway, we had just turned 16 and it was about 5 months until prom. Rianne had the hugest crush on this boy called Kieran. He was captain of the football team, milk chocolate skin, tall, everyday shape up, and a killer smile. She was obsessed with him. We were sitting at our table in the cafeteria and she was sulking like there was no tomorrow.

"What's wrong Rianne? You've been quiet all day." Said Tina, our friend. Tina was Korean and Trinidadian, with big hazel eyes, a small nose, plump lips and curly black hair which she had dyed burgundy/red. She had it in a slick bun at the top of her head. Rianne replied by sighing and laying her head down on the table. I stared at her as I munched on my celery stick.

"What's wrong?" I asked. She raised her head and glared at me.

"We've got 5 months left until prom, and Kieran still hasn't asked me to be his prom date." She looked so upset, like she was about to cry.

"Don't worry, man. He'll ask." I reassured her.

"When?" She frowned. I looked up and saw Kieran looking over at us. He was talking to his best friend Jaiden (Jay-den) who also looked to us. They spoke quickly before spudding each other and going their separate ways. Kieran was walking towards us.

"Er now." Tina said, looking at him also.

"Um Rianne, sit up and fix your face." I said, keeping my eyes on him.

"What for?"

"Kieran is walking towards us so hurry up and fix your face!" I retorted, hoping she'd replace the frown she had with her usual bright smile. She screwed me. He stood behind her.

"Yeah right. Kieran's not interested. He wouldn't talk to me if I was the last person on the planet." She sighed. He bent down and placed his hands on her shoulders.

"Well I guess you must be the last person on the planet then." He whispered. She gasped and turned around as he stood up straight. "Hey Rianne." He smiled, flashing his astonishingly white teeth. She put her hand up and twinkled her fingers slightly.

"Hi Kieran." She whispered, smiling.

"You should smile more, you're smile is mad pretty." He commented shakily, but she didn't seem to notice.

"Thanks." She giggled.

"I just- I was wondering um, can I talk to you real quick?" I could see he was a bit nervous and he shot me a glance as he waited for her to answer.

"Uh sure." She grinned. He held out his hand, helping her to stand up. He smiled again and it's like her legs turned into jelly. She buckled and he steadied her, taking her bag for her. They walked away from us and we watched them disappear around the corner. Tina and I squealed excitedly.

"Oh my days, he's gonna ask her!" She clapped her hands joyfully. I laughed.

"I know! She's gonna be so happy!"

"So happy." She smiled. She stared at me and frowned.

"Who are you going with?" She asked.

"No one."

"What'd you mean 'no one'? Is there no boy you want to go prom with?" She blinked expectantly. I shrugged.

"No." I replied flatly. To tell the truth, there was a boy, Jaiden, Kieran's best friend. He was Italian and Ghanaian, dark brown eyes, forever clear skin, buff body, amazing smile, ooh lawd. But he was off limits. He was going out with the biggest brat in our year, Sophie McDowall. She was faker than fake. She was everyday fake. Fake eyelashes, fake nails, fake hair, fake tan, contacts. Ew, she just made me cringe. I don't know what Jay saw in her at all, but if he was happy being with her, I wasn't going to ruin their relationship and our friendship by asking him to be my prom date, especially when Sophie was probably already his date. Imagine how awkward that would be.

"Liar." Hissed Tina, bringing me out of my daydream.

"What?" I asked defensively.

"You like someone!" She gasped.

"I do not!" I put a hand to my chest.

"Mhm, yeah you do. You like Jaideeeeennnn!!" She longed out his name. I blushed.

"See! You do!"

"I don't." I snapped.

"Then why you blushing?"

"Because it just got hot in here." I replied weakly, unzipping my bodywarmer. She laughed.

"Jay and Riah, sitting in the tree, doing something they shouldn't be." She teased.

"Oh my days, stop." I buried my face in my hands.

"Starts with S-"

"Tina don't."

"Ends in X"

"Tina!"

"Oh my gosh, THEY'RE HAVING SEX!" She yelled, causing a lot of heads to turn our way. She burst out laughing as I glared at her.

"Who's having sex?" Asked Jaiden. When did he get here? Tina continued laughing. He looked at me and I felt myself flush a deeper red.

"You alright?" He asked me. Oh man, his voice.

"Yeah." I whimpered.

"Good, can I talk to you for a sec?" He looked at me eagerly. I stared back.

"Um okay." I put my bodywarmer back on and stood up.

"You gonna be alright by yourself for a few minutes T?" I looked down at Tina who was looking up at me grinning.

"I'm going to be just fine." She giggled.

He led me out of the cafeteria and behind the sports building. We stood there for a few seconds before he spoke.

"Hi." He said.

"Er, hello." I replied awkwardly.

"I know there's only 5 months left until prom, but I was wondering-" I zoned out, thinking he was going to ask me to be his prom date. I started imagining what it would be like; me in a long sexy dress on his arm as we walked down the red carpet. My daydream got cut short when I noticed he was clicking his fingers in my face.

"Sorry what?" I looked up at him.

"I said would you be willing to help?"

"Help with what?" I asked. He sighed. Well this wasn't a good start to our relationship, I thought.

"Help me and Kieran make Rianne's prom experience the best it can be. I was hoping you could, you know, tell us what she likes, what she dislikes, her favourite food and stuff. Can you help us?" Oh. Well that's not the question I was hoping for.

"Uh, sure. I guess." I replied.

"Thanks!" He smiled. I looked down and played with my fingers.

"You alright? You seem upset." He spoke.

"I'm fine. Thank you." My tone was harsh.

"Well bell me later and we'll talk about this more." He handed me a piece of paper with his name and number on it.

"Thanks for this Riah."

"Mm." He hugged me gently but it turned awkward very quickly when I didn't hug back.

"Er see you later yeah?" He let go of me. I nodded, my head still down. I watched him walk off and sighed.

I made my way back to Tina when a stinging sensation attacked my eyes and my vision became blurry. I saw her stand up smiling.

"So how'd it go?" She asked. I shook my head, feeling the first tear escape my eye. She frowned and pulled me into a hug. I don't even know why I got so emotional, I knew he wouldn't ask me anyway.

"Oh babe." Tina said soothingly. I pulled away from her and sniffed.

"It's fine, I'm being silly." I croaked.

"Course you're not. You're hurting, you're supposed to cry." She smiled at me sympathetically. I wiped my eyes and smoothed my eyebrows.

"I hate crying." I mumbled.

"Everyone does." She replied.

"Guess who's going prom with Kieran!" Rianne shouted in a sing songy voice from behind me. I turned slightly, seeing her skipping towards us. I sighed and looked down again.

"Well guess then." She commanded, putting her arm around my shoulder.

"You." Trina smiled at her but glanced at me warily.

"That's right baby!" She exclaimed jumping up and down. She stopped seeing as I wasn't excited.

"Aren't you happy for me Ray?" She asked, calling me by one of my many nicknames.

"Yep."

"Well then act like it for fuck sake." She replied annoyed.

"Rianne, chill." Tina put her hands up.

"No, I'm not going to chill. I want her to be happy for me and she clearly doesn't give a monkeys about my happiness."

"Rianne-"

"No Tina. Ray, can't you see I'm happy right now? Ray look at me." She pulled me by my shoulder and forced me to look at her. She frowned.

"Were you crying?" She asked. I stayed silent.

"Jaiden didn't ask her to prom." Tina informed her. She rolled her eyes and huffed.

"What? So what? She knew he wasn't going to ask her in the first place so why is she all upset?" She looked at me. "You're some any attention seeker you know, trying to take the spotlight away from me. Gosh you're so annoying. Ugh I don't even want to talk to you right now if you're gonna be like this." She cut her eyes and walked away. I sighed.

I didn't get her sometimes. Tina stared at me.

"It's okay Riah."

"Yeah I know."

When the day was over, we all clambered onto the bus. After touching in with my Oyster, I made my way upstairs. I was going to sit at the back but noticed a loud bunch of boys in hoodies and that, were already taking up the two back rows. I sat about two rows in front of them and turned up the house tune blasting through my ears.

Rianne came up and I thought she was going to sit next to me but she walked all the way to the back, which I swear was already full. I rolled my eyes. We always sat next to each other and saved seats for each other when we knew the bus would probably get packed. She decided to ignore my gesture I see. Tina came and sat by me instead and smiled at me and I smiled back. I rested my head on the window and jammed to my music but couldn't ignore the raucous laughter behind me. I turned around slightly, seeing the boys in the back laughing at each other. I blinked repeatedly, seeing Rianne sitting on one of their laps. He had his hood up and I couldn't see his face so I didn't know who he was. She was giggling as his hand moved slowly up the side of her bare thigh. She stared at what I only assumed could be his eyes and slowly pushed the hood off his head.

Oh. It was Kieran. I stood up, not liking the way he was touching her. She looked up at me and I gave her a disapproving look to which she responded by screwing me. She kissed him softly on the lips and blushed as he stared at her. She looked down and he raised her chin, kissing her back longingly. He pushed one of her legs off him and was now moving his hand up under her skirt. This was my cue to intervene. I squeezed past Tina and walked to where they were smooching.

"Everthing alright here?" I asked, noticing all eyes turn to me.

"Yes everything's fine Riah, man." huffed Rianne.

"Don't look fine to me."

"Well it is. Just go sit down." She waved me away. I stood where I was.

"Uh no? I see man touching up my sister and you expect me to just sit and watch?"

"If you have a problem, don't look then." she replied causing all of the boys to laugh.

"Look, what's your problem? You have no business being here, go sit down Riah man, let your sister have some fun for once." Kieran commanded.

"Excuse me?" I put my hand to my chest.

"You heard what I said. Girls like you get so jealous when they see their friends getting comfortable with a man. You're so frigid, that's why man don't want you, yet you're bussing tears as if you try." He added. My eyes widened. She told him I cried because of Jaiden? The air was filled with "ooh"'s and "ah"'s as the boys turned into a frenzy. At that moment, I lost all sanity and pulled Rianne off Kieran. Before she could say anything, I started punching him like a mad woman. He kicked me to the floor and started punching back twice as hard. After a number of good jabs, I tasted the blood from my lip and started to feel dizzy. I watched Rianne screaming and trying to pull him from me, he turned around and pushed her so hard that when she collided with the boy behind her, they both fell down. That gave me the extra bit of energy I needed to push him off me. When I did, I straddled him and hit him as if my life depended on it. I didn't stop until I was dragged off of him. I took the hands of whoever was holding me and pushed them away from me. I looked at Kieran on the floor and kicked him twice, as hard as I could. He was silent with the second kick and I heard a loud crack. Shit. Seeing everyone watching me, I picked up my bag and got off the bus at the next stop, walking the rest of the way home.

I knocked on the door, realising I had probably dropped my keys on the bus during the scuffle with that imbecile. -_-

Mum opened the door.

"Oh my gosh, Ray! What happened to your face?" She exclaimed.

"I got in a fight." I mumbled, barging past her. As I made my way to my bedroom, well me and Rianne's room, I reflected on my actions.

Maybe it wasn't the best decision to get into a fight with her prom date. You know, she did like him a lot, but then again he was a dickhead for fighting back. I mean, what guy hits a girl? And yeah, maybe I started it and that was out of order but I had my reasons.

After I kicked my shoes off and threw my bodywarmer on the floor, I jumped into my bed. Laying face down, I screamed into my pillow.

"Yeah, you know you're wrong." I turned my head to Rianne who was standing by the door with her arms crossed.

"Leave me alone." I murmured.

"Why'd you hit him?" She asked, sitting on the edge of my bed.

I sat up and faced her. "Cos he disrespected me innit." I touched my throbbing cheek and winced.

"That doesn't give you the right to start a fight with him."

"Rianne, why're you having a go at me? Have a go at Kieran, he did hit me back after all."

"You still started it."

"And you're taking his side right now."

"I'm not taking his side-"

"Yes you are." I replied aggravated. "You're acting like I'm the only one in the wrong here, when I'm not. Have you not seen what he did to my face!?" I pointed to my face. Honestly I hadn't even seen my face but it hurt so I assumed it looked bad.

"Ray, you put him in hospital." she stared at me. Say what?

"No I didn't."

"Yes you did. He's in hospital right now."

"That's a lie."

"You didn't see the ambulance and the feds on your way home?" She asked. After thinking about it, I did recall seeing an ambulance. But she didn't need to know that.

"No." I replied. She stared at me.

"You are unbelievable." she huffed, leaving the room.

Soon after, mum came in with a bag of frozen peas.

"Who'd you get into a fight with?" she asked, sitting next to me.

"No one important."

"Well Ann seems upset about it."

"Is it?" I replied sarcastically. Her eyes bore into me as she sat watching me silently.

"Ray, who was it?"

"Mum, it's not important." I whined. She kept asking me questions but I just stayed silent. After a while, she gave up and left. I took a long shower and headed back to the bedroom. While I brushed out my curls, I heard a loud knock at the front door. It was as if it was the feds knocking. I dressed in leggings and a hoodie and put my hair in a messy bun on the top of my head to dry. I scrolled through snapchat and was shocked to see most of the snaps were of me and Kieran fighting or commentary on it. I didn't even see anyone with their phones out. Sighing, I went to my WhatsApp and everyone was questioning me on what happened. The bedroom door opened and mum stood by it looking confused.

"Um, the police want to talk to you." she whispered.

Great.
