First Team Mission

I put the bio-ship on auto pilot and made my way carefully to the cargo hold. I could feel the eyes of the whole team in me now, like a silent send-off to my death.
Hello Megan! This girl won't kill me, would she? She'll be more likely to kill Artemis. But, I was the one who set up the link.
The bio-ship, sensing my approach, opened the door to the hold. As I stepped inside, I looked around for her. As I moved through the boxes, I heard a faint whish of a noise, followed by a thump, thump, thump.
Whish, thump, whish, thump. I rounded a large box and found Renee, throwing knives at an empty box. They whizzed past her ear and landed with astonishing accuracy.
She threw the last knife and watched as it stuck in a small knot in the wood. She spun and looked in my direction. Her eyes scanned the room, and I realized awkwardly that I had turned invisible.
"I know there's someone in here," Renee shouted. "And I'm going to bet it's Miss Martian."
  I turned visible and stepped forward. "I..I'm sorry. I didn't mean to spy, I didn't. I really didn't! I'm sorry, I..."
"Hey, hey," she walked over to me and put her hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it."
I tried to smile, but the weight of guilt on my shoulders was too much. "If your here to apologise for what happened out there, there's no need. I overreacted."
  "But, what was said..."
  "It's okay, really."
  " But...it's my fault....it's all..."
I wasn't aware that I was crying until she wiped a tear away. "M'gann, was it? It's not your fault. I overreacted, that's all, really. And besides I'm used to it. Its like Artemis said, I'm a pretty shady bitch." She put he hand on my shoulder
I sniffed. "The... the mission's starting." I remembered. Renee nodded and stood.
"Good," she chuckled, "I was getting bored back here." We walked out of the cargo hold together.
When we made it to the cockpit, Artemis made a point to avoid eye contact with either of us. Out of anger or guilt, I couldn't be sure.
"Alright team," Kaldur announced, trying to dispell the tension. "We all know the mission. Observe Bane's hidden base, report back to Batman, no unnecessary confrontations."
"Understood," Wally said. He turned to face me, and I knew what would come out. Endless flirtation.
"Heyyyy babe, I'm free after the mission, and I know a great Thai place in Central City."
I forced a kind smile. "Thanks, but I'm good."
  "Next Tuesday then?"
"I...uh....I'm gonna be busy then," I lied through my teeth. Please just drop it.
  "What about...."
"What about you drop it, okay man?" Renee crossed her arms over her chest.
  Thank you.
No problem. She responded psychically. I've had my share of creeps.
  I smiled faintly.
                             ************
Alright, link's up. I nestled into the bush and shifted my eyes to adjust to the dark light. Robin and Superboy took the North End of the building below us, Artemis and I took the South End, Kaldur and Renee were covering the East End, and Wally was running things from the West End.
Just remember, no unnecessary confrontations, Robin reminded us sternly.
"Okay there, Mom. Not like you haven't already said that eighteen goddamn times since we left the ship," Artemis griped next to me.
I wondered for the eighteenth time what her problem was.
  We know, Magpie, Renee chuckled.
  Robin, Wally corrected.
Inside joke, bud. An inside joke that needs to stop. Robin sounded exasperated.
It'll stop when it stops being funny.
  I hate you, Robin grumbled.
  Likewise, Maggie-poo.
I have so many questions, Superboy deadpaned.
  Focus guys. Kaldur scolded.
For hours we watched, listening in to the patrol's conversations. Robin was recording with his holo-watch. Artemis climbed up a nearby tree for a better view.
The dawn's coming, Kaldur announced, jolting the lot of us from a tired haze. We need to move out before they discover the bio-ship.
Agreed, I chirped. I called the bio-ship to Artemis and I's location. It drifted silently above us, and we were soon inside. Wally, run to Robin and Superboy's location. Renee, Kaldur, you stay where you are. The less we need to move around to find you, the better.
  Aye aye, Captain, Robin laughed.
I'm with Rob and Supes. God Rob, how are you not exhausted?
I'm used to long nights, Wally. Batman's protege, remember.
  True, true.
Could you two be married somewhere else? Renee sounded as beat as I felt, and annoyed to boot.
  Piss off, Slenderbitch.
  Fight me, Tweety.
Enough! Both of you! Kaldur sounded furious.
Don't be mad at me! She's the one who can kiss my ass!
Which one? The one on the back of you or the one on your face?
  Why you little...!
SHUT UP! BOTH OF YOU, JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP! Artemis mentally screamed. Silence fell upon the link.
I hovered the ship over the pick up spot before dropping in. Wally, Robin, and Superboy shuffled in. Robin was trying his hardest to avoid Artie's withering glare as he took his seat. We quickly lifted off and started towards Kaldur and Renee's rendezvous. Renee walked in, unlike Robin, with her head held high, fixing Artemis with an eyeless staredown. Artemis glared right back. Renee made her way to her seat, not breaking eye contact. We all watched uneasily, waiting for this dominance display to be over.
Finally, Artemis blinked and sneered, turning her head.
We lifted off silently and began the trip home.
