The bio-ship glided through the air as we raced towards our destination; Santa Prisca. M'gann was piloting, Superboy to her right, Artemis to her left, Rob at the front, Kalder in the back, me at the right wing, and the new girl, Renee, at the left. She was looking at her feet, wringing her hands so hard and fast I thought she would rub through her blue leather gloves.
I wasn't really able to get a good look at her before, mainly because I was hiding from her behind Robin during the mission briefing after she threatened my precious kneecaps. Sure, I had had my life, sanity, and health threatened more times than I could count. (I had long accepted it as a result of my eccentric charm.) But this girl scared me in a way only Batman, Artemis, and my Uncle Barry on a diet, could. Maybe it was her aloofness, or maybe her brass knuckles that bulged from her coat pocket. Oh wait, it was probably the fact that she had no face. I mean, 'come on'! Even I thought that was wierd, and I have a crush on a Martian.
Don't get me wrong, I have seen some wierd shit in my time as a hero, but...
"Can I help you?" My mind snapped into focus, and I realized that I was staring at Renee. The rest of the team turned their attention to me as well. "Well?" She asked, eyeless gaze boring into me.
I gulped. "Uhhh... Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course, I am a member of this team, you might as well trust me," she said sweetly. Even then, I stayed cautious.
"Why a faceless mask? I mean, sure, it's cool and all, but..."
She interrupted me with a chuckle. "Too be honest, I don't know why Q chose a faceless mask. Probably because they look cool. I know I would have chose a faceless mask of it was me." She swiveled her head around the bio-ship. "I'm serious, any question you have, I'll answer to the best of my ability."
"What is your favorite color?" M'gann asked. God, she was adorable.
  "Red."
  "Favorite animal?" I inquired.
  "Horse."
  "How old are you?" Kaldur.
"Sixteen. Going on thirty, as Q says."
  "When's your birthday?" Robin asked.
"Why, thinking about sending a card?" She chuckled again. "I take cash and gift cards, by the way. And it's September 7th."
"That makes you a Virgo!" Robin laughed. "Cool, I'm an Aries. "
  We all looked at him.
"What? I read my horoscope every now and then. Doesn't everyone?"
"Literally, like, no one else believes that nonsense." Artemis grouched from her chair.
"I do!" M'gann smiled, and my heart sang. "I'm a Sagittarius!"
  "Scorpio," I piped up.
"I am a Pisces," Kaldur said. "In Atlantis, we study the stars and constellations to help us navigate, as well as ocean currents."
"You guys are nerds," Artemis sighed. "I'm a Leo. August 3rd."
There was a small pause in the conversation before Renee finally said, "Wow, we went from faceless masks to zodiac signs in, like, ten minutes. Are all your conversations like that?"
"More often than not," Superboy said. It was the first he had spoken all trip.
"Good, then. I'll fit right in."
"Babe, it doesn't take too much to fit in with us." I shot her a cheeky grin.
"Any more questions?" She asked too quickly.
"Yeah, I got one." Artemis snapped. "Why don't we focus on the mission, not on star clusters in the sky!" She turned her glare back to the window.
Hey, Artemis, what's the deal? Robin asked psychically.
'What's the deal?' The deal is that, up until an hour ago, I didn't even know there was a "Question", and then this dude and his sidekick show up, and none of you find that shady? None of you?'
Trust me, Robin commented, the Question is trustworthy. I've worked with him on several occasions, and I trust him with my life. Although...
  'Although' what?
Although I find it weird that the Question never mentioned anything about Renee to your mentors. I mean, if he had a sidekick, I'd like to think he'd tell the rest of the League about her, not just Bats and I.
Q's got a lot of aces up his sleeve. M'gann gasped as Renee's voice slid into our minds. "He just didn't trust anyone to see his cards." This she said out loud, with a bite in her voice that made me terrified. "Question time's over," she said as she unbuckled herself and stood up. "I'm going to take a walk. Tell me when we get there." And just like that, she disappeared into the cargo hold.
As soon as she left, Artemis whirled on M'gann. "What the hell were you thinking, letting into that conversation!"
M'g looked about ready to cry. "I... I'm sorry. I must have accidentally set up the link in her mind! I'm just so used to sending the link to everyone in a room, and I just... I'm so sorry!" She hung her head.
"Well," Kaldur said shakily. "It's going to be hard to come back from that."
"That's for sure. She's definitely not going to trust us after that shpeel." Several minutes of silence went by before Robin looked at his holowatch. "Hey, we're almost there."
We all looked around us, the unspoken question poised on everyone's tongue.
Finally, M'gann sighed. "I'll go get her."
