Part 3
"What sort of help? Dynamene asked cautiously. She was there to wander around on her own, having escaped home without having to bring anyone along. As much as she did not want to be rude, she didn't want to be saddled with some confused old man either. "I'm working on a project and I need an assistant." "What sort of project?" "Research."
Dynamene knew that a random person in a pub was probably not seriously offering her a job. She took a sip of her drink and pretended to be disinterested. "Would you pay or is it for experience?" Now Scor knew that it was time to use the little bag he had been given as funding. The thing is he wasn't very sure they were entirely up to date, after all the discipline of interdimensional studies had never really been able to figure out the numbers.
Seeing him hesitate, Dynamene shook her head and gave a resigned sad smile. "Do you think one of these will be enough?" He asked, pulling out a grubby little coin and offering it to her. "She shook her head firmly now. "I very much doubt you'll find anyone willing to work for free." The coin wasn't even real. It was the colour of copper and had little lines on it instead of the regular numbers etc. Some sort of funny pin she thought. She put it down on the bar in front of them. "What was the topic?" She asked with a grin, now that there was no chance of her doing any of the research. "Mythology I suppose. End of the world, day of reckoning, etc." "Could be fun." "It is on some days." "Today isn't one of those days?" She guessed. He put his head between his hands and stared at his empty plate.
He stayed that way till the server, considering his disapproving scrutiny of his plate, came back to take it before the little man started shouting again. As he picked up the plate he saw the coin on the bar. "That's a good specimen" he said, his respect for Scor increasing, even if marginally. "My parents used to collect these." He picked it up almost reverentially. "That's Egyptian" he told Dynamene. "It looks like copper, but it's really gold and it's called a stater like the Greek ones because they used to use them to pay the Greeks."
Dynamene looked at Scor with suspicion and curiosity. "I can really keep it if I work as your assistant?" "Oh would you? I have more of these if you want." "Aren't you going to interview me?"
"What for?" He asked. "To know if I'm right for the job. You met me in a pub. You don't actually know if I can even read." She said. "Can you read?" "Yes of course." "Most impressive. You're hired." Something about this was obviously fishy. So fishy that Dynamene was curious. The man didn't look dangerous at all and she could always bail if things took a weirder turn.
"Alright so when do I start?" "I can tell you as soon as I've found a place." He asked the man behind the bar if they had any rooms. "We have a couple of rooms upstairs but it will be noisy." "I don't mind."
