16| Whole New World of Bad
"Sam? Ellie?"
"Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah."
I got to my feet, Sam and Dean nearby as we looked around at our surroundings. We appeared to be in a forest, everything bathed in an eerie green light.
"Come on," Dean said.
We made our way through the forest, jumping down into a ditch.
"Where the hell are we?" I asked.
We climbed out of the ditch, walking further into the forest. Off in the distance, there was the sound of something large growling and then stomping.
⁘
We were camped out in a clearing, Dean roasting a couple lizards over a fire. Picking off a piece of flesh, Dean eyed it for a brief moment before sticking it in his mouth. Across the fire, Sam grimaced.
"No, no, no, don't tell me it tastes like chicken."
"No, Sam, it's a lizard," Dean deadpanned. "It tastes like a lizard."
I snorted, grabbing my own experimental piece off the stick.
"You know, we really gotta get moving, keep looking for that door."
"Yeah, if there is a door," I replied.
"Well, last time we opened one, it stayed open," Sam reminded us.
"Yeah, for a few hours," Dean nodded. "We've been here for what, two days, in change? I mean, look man, I hope you're right, I really do, but if you're not and we're stuck here in this freaking monster land? I mean, nobody back home even knows where to start looking for us."
"So what are you saying?"
"I'm saying eat up."
Sam grimaced again as Dean offered him part of the fried lizard. In the distance, we heard the same growl and loud stomping sound we'd been hearing since day one.
"That sound closer to you?" I asked the brothers worriedly.
"Yeah," Sam nodded. "What do you think it is."
"Let's not find out," Dean concluded.
He stuck the stick with the fried meat in the ground and we all stood to leave. Sam jogged up ahead with me in the middle, and Dean circled back to get the meat before bringing up the rear. The sound of the footsteps continued to grow louder.
"Look, guys, I don't think this is just a different world, I think it's a different universe," Sam said.
"Yeah, well, this universe sucks," Dean grumbled.
We paused a moment to allow him to try and get something unstuck from his boot. We all went into high alert a moment later when we heard a noise.
"What was that?" I asked.
A cloaked figure jumped out, attacking us with a spear and knocking us out with remarkable marksmanship. When we came to, we were tied to three separate trees.
"Sam, Ellie! Hey," Dean called over to us.
"What happened?" I asked groggily.
The cloaked figure appeared in our line of sight, standing next to a giant skull.
"Hey, yo!" Dean yelled. "Darth Dickwad!"
The figure used their spear to bang on the skull three times and then walked away.
"The hell?"
"What was that all about?" Sam asked.
The ominous growling started back up in the distance. I looked around, spotting the skeletons of several small animals scattered around us, and realization struck me.
"I think they just rang the dinner bell," I looked over at the brothers.
Dean began struggling against his bonds, trying to break free as the sound of roaring and footsteps got nearer.
"Ugh, damnit!"
"Guys, you hear that?" Sam asked.
Claire cut through Dean's bonds, circling around into his line of sight. Kaia did the same for Sam before coming over to free me.
"Claire?" Dean asked.
"Hey, guys," she smiled.
"My hero," he grinned back.
"Hey, how did you get here?" I asked.
"It's the door, it's still open."
"For now," Kaia added.
"Where's Jack?" Sam asked.
"I think he's in the other place with Ellie's mom," Kaia replied.
The noises were way closer now.
"It's time to go," Claire announced.
"Yeah, we gotta go," I agreed. "Go, go, go."
We hurried away from the area, Claire and Kaia leading us in the direction of the door back to our world.
"There!" Kaia pointed.
We skidded to a stop around the portal like the one that had been outside the lake house before Jack was born. Kaia turned at a snap of branches and managed to push Claire out of the way as the hooded figure threw their spear. Instead of hitting Claire, it impaled Kaia and she fell to the ground. Sam, Dean and I drew angel blades, preparing to fight.
"Kaia..." Claire said.
Kaia reached out, taking Claire's hand. As she died, her hand went limp, falling out of Claire's. Suddenly, the approaching footsteps stopped and Sam, Dean and I looked up at a gigantic monster with glowing red eyes and a face of rock that stood behind the cloaked figure. Behind us, Claire got up in a rage and stormed toward the figure. Luckily, I snapped out of my stupor just in time to grab and restrain her.
"No, no, no, Claire! Come on, we gotta go!"
My yell seemed to also snap Sam and Dean out of it.
"Go, go!" Sam yelled. "Go, go, go!"
As the giant rock monster roared, showing its teeth, all four of us vanished through the gate into our world. As we fell through into the boat on the other side, the portal closed behind us.
"No!" Claire cried in despair.
Jody came into the room, dropping down to cradle Claire, who was sobbing on the ground. Donna, Alex and Patience came in, joining us in the room. Jody looked up at Sam, Dean and I curiously, to which Sam shook his head sadly. Outside, we said our goodbyes as we headed over to the car.
"You know, I tried talking to her," Dean said quietly, looking over at Claire.
"Yeah, she's, uh, she seems pretty shut down," Sam nodded.
"Claire's going to need a lot of time," Jody replied.
"Well, um, when she is ready to hear it..." I began.
"You tell her thanks from us," Dean finished.
"Jody, that rift was open for a while; more of those things may have come through," Sam added.
"Now, we've seen some freaks, but over there is a whole new world of bad."
"We will handle it," Jody assured us. "Come on, you guys take care of the world. We got Sioux Falls covered."
"Damn right you do," Dean grinned at her.
We each took turns giving her hugs goodbye, then climbed into Baby, waving out the windows.
"Bye!" Jody waved after us.
