"Anu yaar, aa jao." (Come on," Gautam insisted again and again. Anushka chuckled, playing with the hem of her dress.
"Chup Kar. Pagal hai? (Shut up, are you mad?) I don't wanna intrude on your dramatic family party." She replied dramatically. Gautam's family was huge. Really huge. And it was super dramatic too. Festivals were either too friendly or either resulted in broken bones.
Diwali was quite literally boring for her. But what else did she expect? The last Diwali she had spent was in NewYork. Her boyfriend, even though he was a half turkish half American guy, no where close to knowing any hindi traditions still prepared a nice meal for her and even played diwali songs. It was a sweet memory for her and far better than sitting in a bar.
"You're alone on diwali babe. Come on," Gautam sighed, close to giving up. He knew how stubborn she really was.
"Gautam I really appreciate you calling me there but I really am okay. I'm gonna sit, drink a little, wait for a cute boy. You know, the usual." She shot back playfully.
She was only half joking. She hadn't met any cute 'single' guys lately. It was kind of frustrating.
"Tharki, (you flirt)." Gautam murmured making her laugh.
"Acha chal, tu enjoy kar. (Okay then, you enjoy.)"
"You can come anytime you want, okay?" Gautam assured. She already knew that.
"Mhmm."
Anushka ended the call finally and looked at the bartender who was quite literally staring at her.
Whether he was pitying her for being alone like that on Diwali or whether he was just into her. She didn't know.
"Mam we also have the diwali special platter, would you like to have that?"
Definitely pitying her. Anushka shook her head at the bartender's question. She was at a bar. Why the fuck would she want to have dinner here?
"I'm not really hungry right now. Just give me your best scotch." She told him. He nodded.
"Coming right up."
She thought about things. If only her parents weren't such brats. If only they cared about her too. She thought about how life would have been better in Newyork. Atleast she wouldn't pity her self.
She thought about calling Emir then. Her ex. Maybe things could be better this time.
No. I'm not that stupid. I just need to get through tonight and I'll be fine tomorrow. I will be.
She reminded herself. She was lost deep in her thoughts when she heard a voice.
"Didn't think I would find you here."
Virat Kohli stood right behind her and as she turned around, her breath hitched. This was the first time she had seen him dress so casually. A tshirt and a pair of jeans. He looked like a casual guy today. As casual as a millionaire CEO could look.
"Virat? Oh hi. What are you doing here?" She questioned as he sat on the stool beside her.
"What do people do in a bar?" Virat shot back making her roll her eyes at him.
"Shouldn't you be celebrating Diwali? With your wife?" She asked. He nodded.
"Sonam had to go to her parent's. I couldn't so here I am. What about you?" The scotch and the shots finally came up. The bartender put them in front of her face.
"Your wife ditched you, my dad ditched me. Same old." She said chuckling and then gulped another shot.
The third one.
"Slow down." Virat advised.
Anushka was too far gone to care. She was drinking on an empty stomach.
"Hey now, I looooove drinking on festivals. Besides I didn't drink at holi." She told him.
Last Holi, she was busy giving her exams back in Newyork. She took another shot and felt a little lightheaded but didn't stop. She wanted to get through the night.
"If you throw up, I'm not gonna hold your hair." Virat stated making her laugh.
"You totally are. Come on, join me." She said, sliding a glass towards his direction.
"I shouldn't. I do have work." He informed. She snorted.
"Oh shut it, you're the boss. Chill out."
"And you are my employee, another reason why I shouldn't." He said but picked up his glass anyway.
"It'll be our secret, ssshh."
Virat gave her a smile and both of them clinked their shot glasses together gulping down the drink.
"Ya know, you're pretty cute. Its a shame you're married." Anushka told him. Her voice slurry. Virat smirked.
"You're kinda drunk." He murmured. She rolled her eyes.
"Kindaaaa? I'm like superrrr drunk. No, drink."
Virat sighed amused at her behaviour. He knew she was upset but he couldn't help but enjoy her rubbish talk.
"So like have you wondered about other girls? You know I have this theory that if I ever get married I'm gonna still keep fantasizing about hot men." She said after a while making Virat look at her weirdly.
"What?" He interrogated. She patted his shoulder.
"Like..say, is fantasizing cheating?" She put forth her question.
Alright Virat. Leave now.
His mind said.
Virat, stay. She's a girl. You shouldn't leave her alone in this condition.
His heart replied.
"In a way, I guess." He answered. Anushka stood up, leaning against the wall for support.
"What's the best part about marriage?" She questioned him softly.
"Waking up to her." His response and that fond face made her feel like the most unlucky person on earth. But she still didn't say anything. Instead she made a cringe face.
"Bleh, you can wake up to so many beautiful faces in the world sooo that was just lame." She slurred as reply.
"Cliche you mean?"
"Whaaaat? What's that? Is that a place?" Either she was really drunk or either she was totally faking it. Maybe drinking on an empty stomach wasn't a good idea.
Virat sighed holding out his arm.
"Leave it, come on..I'll drop you off."
"Where?" She asked frowning.
"Your home." He stated, holding her arm. He felt like he shouldn't have held her like that but he couldn't leave her to fall either.
"Noooo, not there. Let's go to New York." She squealed. The girl really loved Newyork. Virat knew that for sure.
"Honey, mumbai to newyork is a long journey." He told her, walking by her side.
"Fine, but we'll drive there tomorrow okay?"
"Kay." He murmured as the guard opened the door. Virat used his arm to unlock the car and looked at her.
"Hold onto me tight." He whispered. Anushka's eyes moved towards him as she stared at his face.
"I imagined you saying that under different circumstances." She whispered back.
She held his arm and then used jer hand to grab his jaw softly feeling the beard graze her hand. His skin was soft and his beard tickled her hand.
"I'm not even gonna ask what you mean by that." Virat murmured back. He was about to move when Anushka did something both of them didn't expect her to do.
She tried to kiss him.
"Hey, heyyy. Stop. Come on." Virat stopped her. He had alot of young drunk girls making advances at her but nobody was as different as Anushka. This felt different for some reason.
"What? I'm just wondering how it's like." She stated lamely. Virat rolled his eyes.
"Anushka, you're drunk. Now, come sit in the car." He ordered. She didn't want to take any.
"No! I need to kiss you first. I wanna see how it feels." She whined stubbornly.
"Look, I'm a little drunk myself and you're wasted so let's just go home. Okay?"
Anushka nodded after Virat's words. He let loose and moved again when she grabbed his face again. "Sshh, shush now." And then she did it.
She kissed him. Her lips moved around his, his remained hard, untouching but they finally softened and his arms grabbed her waist pulling her closer. It wasn't the kind of kiss seen in movies or read in books but it was still different, something about it was enchanting.
It was a sin but it didn't feel like that.
She could feel his warm breath, his unsteady heartbeat, his nerves and he could feel her too.
Her heart hammered like wings beating, hard and fast. Reality hit him a little and he stepped back. She looked at him with a smile.
"Once my lips touched yours, you didn't resist."
She whispered.
"I-can't." He resisted.
"Come on, I mean..look at me." She smirked. He did. He looked at her chest, how it moved up and down, her slender waist and her legs. God, her legs.
"I am but I just-" He tried to say something, something to get him out of this thing he wanted so badly.
"Sshh-" She quiened him down again, her mouth grazing the side of his mouth. She cupped his jaw.
"Nobody will ever know. Just tonight." She promised.
"Just tonight."
He finally said. But that's what the biggest sinner also said, just one taste. And after that? He couldn't get enough of it.
