Chapter 52: Do We Trust It?

Jina slowly came back. She groaned as her consciousness woke up. Her head hurt. She didn't like the feeling of drug induced sleep. She struggled to become fully awake. She could hear the voices whispering and cursing in her head. Her body felt heavy and sluggish. Her mind felt wrapped in a cocoon of drugs.

"Jina." A deep voice cut through the thick fog. "Come on kid, wake up."

She tried to say something, but it didn't come out in words. Just another groan and possibly a whimper.

"Open your eyes. Fight the dug. Come on, Doctor Crawford didn't give you much, just enough to calm down so you wouldn't kill the boy. Come on I know you're stronger than the drug."

"I wanted to kill him." Her words slurred as she forced it out.

"There she is."

Jina's eyes blinked open. She felt her stomach drop. Doctor Crawford and Captain David were the only people in the small room with her. It was metal and there were buttons down one side of a sliding metal door.

Elevator.

They were inside an elevator. Captain David was holding her, she slowly picked her head up, blinking the last of the drug away. Her stomach dropped again.

"I don't like elevators..." She whispered.

David nodded to Doctor Crawford. She slammed her hand into the big emergency stop button.

"Okay, Jina. We have a few extra minutes now. No camera in the elevator. Now, I need you to listen closely to me."

Jina frowned. Captain David placed her down on shaking legs. She stepped into the corner and slid down into a crouch. David and Doctor Crawford crouched down as well, to be the same level with her.

"Jina, dear, do you trust us?" Doctor Crawford asked.

Jina frowned. She looked back and forth between them. They had helped her escape from WICKED once before. But the last time she trusted someone she ended up back with Janson.

She narrowed her eyes. "The last time I trusted someone...they stabbed me in the back." She hissed.

"And I'm sorry about that. How about you listen to what we have to say and then you make up your own mind?"

Jina thought about it. The voices hummed.

Do we trust it, Precious?
He did let us out for a shower...
But chained us like a fucken dog.

"That's so we wouldn't kill the filthy traitor." Jina whispered to the voices.

That's true, Precious.
Okay.

Jina looked up at the grown ups in front of her. They kept their distance. They didn't seem shocked or surprised by her whispered conversation with herself. Half the time she didn't know she was doing it. The voices were the only things that talked to her. Her mind would snap and the voices were there. Other times she was alone in her mind and it was just Jina.

"Okay, Captain David of WICKED and Doctor Crawford. What do you have to say?"

"The boy was right." David said.

Jina went to protest, but David held up a hand. "Wait. Listen. He was right about you kids all being split up into different facilities. Do you remember Tim?"

"Tim from Survalence in the Waystation. Yes."

"Yes. Exactly. He was at the facility where Thomas and Minho and a few others were being held. With my help and Tim's help, we got them out. That was two months go."

"And they left me behind!" Jina hissed. The awful feeling of abandonment was ripped open, afresh. The twist of a knife in her chest, the ache in her gut. Her hands opened and closed into fist, trying to keep the rage inside.

Jina's body trembled. And her head jerked to the left. Her eyes narrowed at the Captain. "They left us here, Precioys, at the hands of a filthy dirty rat."

"Jina. The guys and the Right Arm have been doing everything possible to get to you."

"Where is Flossie?" Jina suddenly asked.

"How do you know about her?" Doctor Crawford asked.

"A letter in my mashed potatoes said they were trying to extract me. That was a long long time ago. I know that writing. It was Flossie's. Where is she?" Jina demanded.

"I helped get her out, she didn't round the clock surveillance and guards outside her door. I helped smuggle her out and into the resistance group outside the walls."

Jina's trembling faded and she clamped her eyes closed, willing the voices to shut up. "So she's safe?" Jina asked, quietly.

"Yes."

"And Sonya? And Taylor and Harriet and Flo? What about Yelena and Jill and Tavia and Hannah? What about Tess? The guys? Newt, Frypan, Clint...Minho and- and...Tommy?"

Her head twitched slightly to the left, she knew the voices were trying to take over again. Jina struggled to keep control. "What do we care, Precious? He kisses us and left us. They escaped and left us."
"No. Dumb dumb, they said we were somewhere else."
"Ya. They helped others escape and leaves us to be watched by the rat."

Jina shook her head violently. "Shut up! Both of you. They are our friends. Our sisters. And brother. And...and we love Tommy. They are out. They are safe. They are free. And we are happy for them."

"Jina...they were trying to bust a train car with the others. Sonya and Teresa are in the car they were trying to take. If it went well, they will have everyone safe." He checked his watch. "I should be getting a report right away actually."

"Now. That leaves you, Dear."

"Okay Moose."

Doctor Crawford gave her a puzzled look.

"If I'm a deer, you're a moose. Unless you also don't like to be called an animal name..." Jina giggled to herself.
"That was a terrible joke, Precious."
"I thought it was great!"
"Thank you. I was going to use it with the old man...but you ruined it by yelling, dumb dumb."
"He made us angry, Precious."
"Shut up now. The Good Doctor and Captain David of WICKED are trying to talk."

Jina flicked her eyes up to them as they watched her. Concern on both their faces.

"Jina. I need you to keep it together for a bit longer. Okay? The boy was right. If they think your mind is too damaged they will dissect your brain and we can't help you anymore." David said slowly.

"What...what if I don't want help anymore?" Jina whispered. She surprised herself. The voices had gasped and then disappeared. Leaving Jina alone. And empty. A sudden sadness and heaviness filled her, she felt like she was slowly drowning in it. Tears pricked her tired eyes.

"I'm tired." She finally said as a tear rolled down her cheek. "What if I don't want help? Tess fought to save my life- she sent me to the Maze...and then I've had a pretty fucked up life since. What if I'm just done fighting? Done living... No one listens. No one cares anymore. Used. Abused. Lied to. Cheated. Manipulated. Stabbed in the back. Tired. Done."

Another tear slid down her cheek. If what they said was true, and everyone she cared about...or used to care about, were out and safe. Then she could let go. No one listened about an actual cure. Just wanted to see how far they could push her before she broke and fell off the ledge.

"No."

Jina snapped her eyes open. "What?"

"I said no." David said, his face was set and his eyes steady.

Jina blinked, her body was trembling again. Her hands opened and closed over and over.

"We are going to get you out of here. And you will live a long and happy life. Away from here. Because you deserve some kind of happiness."

"I just said I didn't want to!"

"Too bad. You of anyone deserve it."

Jina threw back her head and laughed, it was full of bitterness and sorrow. She got herself under control and glared at the man in front of her.

"Why would I want to live with the memories and nightmares of what was done to me? Live with what I have become? I'm bat shit crazy, Captain David."
"No, yous is not, Precious."
"Shut up. Yes we are."
"Is not!"
"Are too!"
"Is not!"
"SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP!" Jina clamped her hands over her head and shook it, screaming.

"This is easy enough to heal from Jina." Doctor Crawford said gently.

"They want to make us go away!"
"Why would they do that, Precious? We is hilarious. We keeps her safe."
"Well you can go away, your just annoying."
"That was mean, Precious!"
"Please...please stop!" Jina begged herself.

She struggled for control and looked up at David through her tears. "Why are you so desperate to help?"

"You saw first hand what they did to Stella." He said quietly. Jina had to clamp her eyelids closed and think.

"Who is Stella, Precious?"
"She was the first... girl they tested the Griever stinger poison and Grief Serum on."
"Oh, yes Precious we remembers. She's dead now."
"It was awful..."

"Yes. They killed my daughter. I will take them down." David whispered. The venom in his voice is what caught Jina's attention and she stilled.

"His daughter, Precious?"
"Yes, dumb dumb. He said daughter. Clean your ears."

Jina shook her head and looked up at him. His eyes were steady, but held a deep anger. An anger Jina understood. "Stella was your daughter..."

Captain David nodded. "Our one and only. Our beautiful baby girl. She was chosen, as they claimed. They took her. There was nothing I could do. I was just a guard, no respect, no authority. It broke her mother. Now I can do something. Now I will get you free dammit, if it's the last thing I do."

"What...what happened to Stella's mother?"

"When she was taken she became a shell of a person. Living for years as a broken shell. And then when we found out what happened to her...she ended her life. WICKED took my family."

Jina sat on the elevator floor, tears in her eyes, as she watched David struggle with his emotions for a minute. Maybe it was her madness. Maybe it was the unchecked emotions. Maybe it was her touched starved body and mind. But before the voices in her head told her otherwise. Jina crawled over to the Captain and into his lap curling up like a small toddler would in the lap of her father.

Captain David froze. He went stiff. Jina just laid her head on his shoulder and didn't move after that. She let the silent tears run down her cheeks. David and Doctor Crawford had a silent argument and then hesitantly he placed an arm around her shoulders. And slowly cupped the back of her head. He awkwardly held her in a hug.

"I'm sorry about Stella." Jina whispered.

"Ya. Me too." David sighed. "Will you let us help you? Stick it to Ratman, the best revenge is to live free."

"I...I can't control it sometimes." She whispered. "It scares me. Sometimes I know what's happening, and sometimes it's all blank."

"Jina, Dear, that's PTSD. Your brain is just trying to find a way to cope." Doctor Crawford explained gently. She moved so she was crouched in front of Jina's face, she still had her head resting on David's shoulder.

"My brain is making up voices to keep me safe?"

"Yes. It doesn't know what to do with the fear and trauma anymore. So it makes up things for your mind to understand. So the simple reparative songs help soothe it, and the voices are a coping mechanism. It's easy to treat, we just need to get you away and into a safe place."

"Are you coming too?"

"Yes. You're our last one."

"Are there no other kids left?"

"There's about 40 more kids. There's rumors about trying to start a second round of Trials."

Jina sat up straight. Her body stiff. "No. They can't. We have to destroy them. Death is kinder. No more trials. No more torture. No more pain."

"Agreed. We are in talks with the resistance right now. So, please Jina. Keep fighting. For a bit longer." David pleaded, his hand on her shoulder.

"A few more missing pieces and we will take it all down and get you free. Okay?" Doctor Crawford smiled.

"Okay, Moose. I'll try." Jina gave her a ghost of a smile.

Doctor Crawford smiled back. "Okay Raindeer." Giving her hand a gentle squeeze.

Jina let the smile grow. It wasn't big, but it was real.

Jina was back in her room. In her white silent room. Doctor Crawford and Captain David waited for the elevator to be fixed- they didn't tell WICKED they caused it to break. Jina had fallen asleep, her head on David's shoulder. She was exhausted, mentally and physically and emotionally.

But now she was back. Her mind was busy, going over everything that happened today. It was too much. Too much colour, too much noise, too much information.

She curled up and tried to hide her eyes from the none stop light, and sort through the information.

Aris had been right about Thomas breaking out. He had been right about Janson disposing her now that they thought she was broken. She wasn't sure how she felt about Aris. She understood Teresa's actions before the maze and how she struggled in the Scorch. They way everyone was talking, it sounded like Teresa had lost her golden girl status. She was being treated like any other maze test subject- like she was. Jina was a test subject, she always was, but now she had no top candidate status, no Elite recognition. Now she was just a girl locked away. But what about Aris?

He called them on his own. They gave him his memories back. But...was it manipulation, did they give back all his memories or just a few. She didn't know, she didn't bother asking. Jina had told him there was a cure. There was a way to save the cranks. But he didn't believe her- or want to believe her. He had smashed her head with a rock. Teresa hadn't done that...just almost got her killed. They had been free. And then Aris messed it up. Did he feel guilty? He never answered her, if he was happy. He didn't look happy. But did she care? He wasn't being subjected to hallucinations and fear on a regular basis. Or was he? Maybe he was...but he was free to walk around.

Jina's mind wondered to Thomas and Minho. If they were free, what where they doing?

"Captain David of WICKED said they were trying to bust a wicked train car."

Jina pushed herself to sit up, she turned and faced the corner. Her arms wrapped around her small frame.

"Do we trust him, Precious?"
"Yes."
"We trusted before!"
"Captain David of WICKED and Good Doctor Crawford are not Aris."
"She has a point."
"Fine, Precious. Aris is not Captain David of WICKED or Good Doctor Crawford. But do we trusts them?"

Jina struggled. Her head thrashing back and forth, her eyes clamped closed. Her own hands griped handfuls of her own shirt.

"We have to...it's...it's the only way."
"We will see, Precious. We will see."
"I have to hang on. I can see Minho again. And Sonya...and the girls."
"What about Tommy?"
"Ya..." Jina squeaked. "We can see him too."

Her voices were quiet and then it whispered one of her greatest fear.

"What if he doesn't love us anymore?"
"Then Teresa wins, Precious. And they can live happily ever after. Then it's just me, myself and I left. I will love us, Precious."

Jina felt the hysterics coming. The broken tears and manic laughter. It erupted from her chest. Tears streamed down her face as she laughed wildly. Jina knew she was drowning in the madness, but she didn't know what to do. She was alone in a white padded cell. The only thing to look forward to was the next round of fear hallucinations.

Please, Tommy...please, she thought, as another burst of hysterical laughter mixed with a broken sob filled the emptiness around her. She didn't know how much longer she could hold on. Thomas had saved her before. Maybe one last time he would swoop in like Superman and save her from herself.

One call Away by Charlie Puth
This song gives me Tommy vibes.
He's gonna come save his girl. Every time. Even broken and damaged...we hope.
