Chapter 33: Escape

Jina felt her body jostling. Her head lopped lamely to the side. She groaned as she used what energy she could muster to peel her eyes open. She groaned in pain and protest. Her head was still sore, but not like the blinding fire inside her head. Her body felt feverish and weak. Her hearing slowly started working again, making her whimper in protest. There was a lot of noise around her.

"Oh thank shuck! Jina?"

"What?" She groaned. She felt her body being jostled again. She had to blink a few more times. She was being passed from one set of arms to another set. Her eyes were blurry but the more she blinked, and the more her mind woke up, the more her surroundings came into sharper view.

"Can you stand?"

Jina blinked and looked around, Minho was holding her.

"Uhh, ya, ya I think so."

Minho placed her down, and then turned back to the smashed out window, and helped Thomas get Teresa over the window.

"Steady there little lady. That was some episode you just had." Frypan stepped closer, a hand supported her elbow. Jina still felt disoriented and confused. Pulling her eyebrows together and looking around trying to figure out what was going on. They were still in the medical room, the doctors and nurses were lined up along the wall, tied up. Doctor Crawford was laying on the floor convulsing with blue electricity.

"What-?" Jina cried, her voice was raw. Was she screaming? Jina tried to go back for the Doctor, but Thomas was leaping through the smashed out window, and threw an arm out, stopping her. Minho was now holding the gun.

"The guards tried shooting us, she jumped in the way, now come on, she gave us some time." Thomas yelled over the noise. Jina only now saw the med wing door was blocked by an upturned metal cart, but it was starting to give as more guards pushed against it. Their guns stuck through the crack and were shooting blindly.

"But-" She tried to protest.

"Come on Ji!" Thomas cried, grabbing her hand and pulling her away from the doctor.

"But Doctor Crawford-"

"She said she would be fine. Lets go!" Thomas yanked her away.

Jina felt tears prickle her sore tired eyes. But she let Thomas pull her away. Thomas shoved his way to the front of the group, Minho passed him the gun, he pulled the door open and a guard stood there. Thomas shot him first. The guy dropped convulsing with blue stings of electricity jumping all over his body.

"Go! Go go go!" Thomas yelled, stepping around him.

The group skirted around him and dashed off down the hall. Thomas led them down the halls. Frypan was helping Teresa along, Minho was running along beside Jina, who still felt the after effects of the memories resurfacing. The group ran through a few halls and turns without anyone in the way. Jina hoped, maybe Tim in surveillance was working his magic, giving poor instructions. But as soon as she thought that, they passed a hall and there was a group of guards at the end of the joining hall.

"Shit." Jina cried, "Thomas! Their coming!"

"Shit. Okay, come on!" He took another turn, ushering them faster.

"Stop!" One guard yelled, they were rushing after them.

"There it is!" Newt yelled, pointing at the huge shipping bay doors. They all skidded to a halt outside the doors. There was a crackle and a robot woman's voice blasted through the speakers everywhere.

"Converge on 3. All R-16 personnel... non-lethal only."

"Shit. Come on!" Thomas swore, trying David's pass. The bay doors beeped red.

"Access denied." The mechanical voice stated.

"No, no, no!"

Minho grabbed the pass and tried.

"Access denied."

They kept trying the pass.

ARIS!  Jina screamed, trying to reach Aris via mind link . Where are you?

Give me a second! Came his response, as her head buzzed Jina could feel his frustration and panic. She had no idea what was happening to him and Winston.

We don't have a minute Aris! You gotta open the Bay doors NOW!

Working on it Jina! He cut the mind link.

"Thomas!"

Jina spun around. Janson was standing at the end of the hall, a row of guards with shields and huge guns behind him. He slowly sauntered his way towards them, his arms spread wide, like he won.

"Open this door, Janson!" Thomas yelled, he started walking towards Janson. Jina went to follow, but Minho grabbed hold of her. She struggled, but Minho was clearly bigger and stronger. And she was still wiped from the after shock memory wave.

"You don't want me to." Janson said with a smirk, his dark eyes swept the group, and landed on Jina. His face broke out into a smile so evil Jina shivered.

"Open the damn door, Ratman!' Jina screamed.

"Listen to me! I'm trying to save your life." He yelled back,

THOMAS! Jina mentally screamed at him, STOP! She saw him flinch and Thomas finally stopped walking closer, he held the gun up, pointing it at Janson.

"The maze is one thing, but you kids wouldn't last one day...out in the Scorch. If the elements don't kill you, the cranks will."

"Bullshit!" Jina screamed, still struggling against Minho's iron grip. "You were gonna send us out there anyways you dumbass! What was Trial two, other then running around the Scorch?"

Jina saw his face twitch in surprise. But he had a good poker face. His eyes slid back to Thomas.

"Thomas, you have to believe me. I only want what's best for you. Don't let your little girlfriend twist your thinking."

Jina felt her cheeks go pink, but she was twisting and fighting with everything she had to get out of Minho's grip.

"Yeah, let me guess. WICKED is good?" Thomas snarked.

"You're not getting through that door, Thomas."

Thomas fired his gun, and blue electricity lit up the hall.

"Let.me.go!" She hissed at Minho.

"No." He snapped.

ARIS! Just as she screamed that, the robot voice from the door crackled.

"Access granted."

The big bay doors slid open. Aris and Winston stood on the other side of the door, a new swipe card in his hands. Winston and him both had backpacks stuffed full. Aris gave a small wave.

"Hey, guys."

"Come on!" Newt ushered the group through the door.

"Thomas!" Jina screamed desperately, as Minho dragged her through the door, his grip was so tight, she would have bruises.

"Thomas! Come on! Let's go!" Minho yelled.

"Go, go. Stop them!" Janson screamed, his face twitching wildly, while it turned red.  Thomas slowly backed up, pulling the trigger over and over. Janson had ducked behind the guards and their shields. One blue sizzling ball hit a guard and she went down, screaming. Thomas swept the little balls of electricity back and forth until there was nothing left. He just chucked the gun in frustration.

"THOMAS!" Jina screamed again, tears in her eyes.

"Shut the main door!" Janson yelled into his comb.

"No!" Jina screamed again, and she sagged against Minho. "Please no!" She whispered in horror as the door started to slid shut. Thomas was sprinting towards them.

"Come on!" Minho yelled, "Come on Greenie! Move your ass!"

Thomas locked eyes with Jina for a split second, and then he dropped and slid on his hip under the last few inches of the shutting door. He slid into Jina, taking her legs out from underneath her and she tumbled on top of him. He held her tight, and somehow managed to scrambled to his feet.

"Thomas?" Teresa asked, her big blue eyes looked like a lost puppy's, she held his arm, even though Thomas had his arm around Jina. "What's going on?"

"Thomas!" Janson screamed, slamming his hands on the little window of the door. Aris smashed something into the key pad, it sparked and then smoked.

Thomas pulled his arm free enough to flip Janson off, Jian grinned and flipped Janson off too.

"You little shits!" Janson cursed

"Fucken Ratman!" She laughed at him cursing at them.

"Come on, Thomas! Jina! Come on!" Newt yelled.

"We gotta go! Come on!" Aris yelled. He tossed a backpack to Minho and one to Frypan. "David said big red button on the Shipping doors- don't go through the tunnel."

Jina pulled away from Thomas's tight hold, and ran for the door, seeing the big red button. And slammed her hands onto it, the big red light flashed and a siren went off, the doors parted. Revealing the dreaded Scorch.

Heat slammed into Jina like a solid wall. Sand whipped up into her face, it ripped at her clothes and clawed at her hair. The wind was so strong, there were little tornados of sand everywhere. It was pitch black out, and they could hardly see more then ten feet in front of them. Jina felt her stomach twist in apprehension.

"Move! Move!" Thomas yelled, waving them all through. To Jina's annoyance, Teresa was gripping Thomas's arm.

"Thomas, what's going on?" She cried again.

Jina tried not to roll her eyes. "Come on." She yelled, getting a mouth full of sand. But she ran head long into the sand storm. The guys right behind her.

"Come on. Keep moving!" Thomas was yelling, his voice was muffled by the wind and swirling sand.  "Come on. Come on!"

They were running almost blind. Jina felt her feet sinking into soft sand, it made running nearly impossible. They ran for their lives. Ran away from the building, and the glaring spot lights, and blue electricity guns. The wild alarm blared behind them, letting everyone know that they had escaped.

Jina put her head down and ran, ran past some of the guys. "Come on, come on!" Jina yelled. "We'll lose them in the storm! Go!"

Over the wild screaming of the siren came the sounds of vehicles. And people yelling directions at each other. Jina led the group up a sand dune and down the other side. They stumbled and were almost blown over a few times. Yet they kept running, and climbing sand hills and sliding down the other side.

"Where are we going?" Someone yelled.

"Away!" Jina yelled back.

They scrambled up another hill. Thomas called for a halt for a second. Jina slowed down at the top, sliding down just enough to hid behind the peek of the sand dune. The guys and Teresa all followed her lead and peeked around, trying to see the huge building. Wild spot lights were swinging back and forth, desperately trying to find them. The sounds of ATVs and dirt bikes were heard in the distance. The wind made it sound like they were coming from every direction. They were all breathing heavily, hands held up to block the sand, eyes squinted. Jina felt a hand on her. She turned her head and saw Teresa right beside her.

"What's going on?" She yelled over the wind.

"We escaped WICKED."

"WICKED?"

"Yes."

"That was WICKED?"

"Yes." Jina nodded, looking back to the building and wild spot lights. Jina felt a tug on her arm again. Clamping her jaw shut in annoyance, she turned back to the girl with icy blue eyes.

"Please...can you explain to me what the shuck is going on!" she pleaded.

Jina narrowed her eyes. What game was she playing now. Jina's memories didn't lie before, so she knew the most recent ones about Teresa were true. And she was the reason Jina was sent into the maze. The set up, the framing, the lies, the rivalry. For what purpose? But right now, in the dark, in the wind storm, in the panic of escaping...Jina passing out for a few minutes was disorienting enough, she couldn't imagine waking up after who knows how long to pure chaos around her.

"Fine." Jina relented. She slid down the hill away from the noise and wild gusting winds. It was calmer at the base of the sand hill. Jina didn't have to yell so loudly.

"Wait...before you tell me...I need to tell you something! Please!" She was gripping her arm. Her big blue eyes held fear. She reached a hand behind her and rubbed her neck. "Please...Jina? It's Jina, right? Jina...please believe me. I'm... I don't know what..but..." Teresa glanced up at the guys and tugged her further away.

"Wait. Teresa, stop. We need to stick together!" Jina cried.

"Please! I don't want them to hear. Not...not until...just...please!" Teresa looked close to tears. Jina didn't know how much to actually believe her.

Tommy! Teresa is acting weird!

She felt Thomas's immediate presence. His guard was up and he was allert. Jina glanced behind her, the guys were starting to slid down the hill.

"Come on! We gotta keep going!" Thomas shouted. "Stick together...come on!"

Where are you? Jina! I don't see you!

At the bottom!

Teresa was pulling her, she was quite strong.

"Please, I need to tell you alone! In private! I don't want everyone to know!" Teresa pleaded as she pulled Jina away. "Please, I'm scared!"

"Hey! Teresa! Teresa, wait!" Thomas yelled.

"Tommy!" Jina yelled, now very weirded out by Teresa's behavior. She struggled to yank her arm away.

"Jina! Teresa! Wait! Stay together!"

"Just five minutes, please Jina!" Teresa begged. A few tears ran down her grimy face. "Jina, they did something to me! I don't know what...but they did something! Put something inside me!"

That caught Jina's attention. She stopped struggling for a second. In that second Jina stepped forwards with a wind gust. Jina tried to catch hold of something to stop herself from falling. She felt the ground under her give. Jina shrieked and tried to step away from the caving ground. Jina grabbed Teresa's arm. Only for her to yank it away and step backwards. The ground gave out. Jina was falling. With a sharp scream, Jina tumbled down, away from the Scorch and into something cold, dark and silent.
