Chapter 29: After Shocks

Jina stood rooted to the spot. Thomas. And Minho. Her brain felt like splitting open, the pain was so intense. Jina stumbled her way back to the table where Aris was and sunk down onto the bench.

"Absolutely the guys from A. Aris... I know them!" Jina managed to gasp as the pain intensified. She winced and groaned in pain.

"Ji? You okay?" Aris asked frowning at her.

"My head... It hurts so much." She gasped again.

"Memories? Migraine? Brain tumor?"

"I... I don't know. I don't really have concrete memories of them. But I know them! Minho and Thomas...! I know them!" She flinched again. Grabbing her head.

"Ji, I think you need Doctor Crawford." Aris hissed, the worry on his face was clear. "Just hold on okay?"

He got up and rushed over to David. He whispered furiously and then pointed. Jina was doubled over with the pain. She was biting her lip so hard to keep the cries of pain inside. There was an instant rush, David and the guard named Tim were beside Jina in an instant, pushing the kids out of the way to get to her.

She tried to get up on her own but her knees buckled and her head swam, she crashed to the cafeteria floor. Spots danced in her eyes and her stomach twisted violently. She felt her body collapse fully onto the ground as she struggled to stay conscious.

"Jina! Come on kid stay with me. Stay with me."

"It... It.. hurts... Make.. it... Make it stop... Please." She let a gasp of pain out. She forced her eyelids open and saw the whole cafeteria surrounding her. She saw Aris hovering over David's shoulder.

"What's wrong with her? Is she okay? Is she having a seizure?" Jina's fuzzy eyes did their best to find the voice in the crowd. And when she did find those big whiskey brown eyes staring at her with worry and concern, the worst pain yet exploded inside her head. She clamped her jaw but a shriek of pain escaped, and she withered on the ground.

"We need Doctor Crawford, Tim, go and inform the doctor I'll be bringing Jina. Move. Now!"

There was chaos around her, she heard guards yelling to get back to their seats and kids protesting, many feet stomping. She felt her body being lifted. Her mind went black for a second and then swirled with colour and sounds. She felt her body bouncing and dull thuds.

"Come on kid. Stay with me."

She just groaned. Her head flopped. David rushed her down the bright hall.

"Diana!" David's voice shouted, making her flunch and whimper. "Diana! Code red!"

She was laid down on something. She curled up onto her side clutching her head. She had no idea how long she stayed curled up wishing everything was quiet and dark. The pain in her head swelled and then decreased. And then it swelled again. She just curled even tighter and whimpered. There was a sharp pinch in her shoulder and then she felt her body relaxing and the intense burning in her head lessened and she sighed in relief.

Her body pulled her into sleep.

Her eyes flew open and she sat bolt upright. Her chest heaved a few times as she tried to figure out what was going on. She blinked a few times and looked around. She was in the Med Bay. She was hooked up to a few different monitors, which all beeped quietly. She also had an IV in her arm hooked up to some kind of clear bag. She rubbed her eyes and looked around. She was still in her regular clothes, the room was dimmed and only curtains blocked her and the next bed. Standing just on the other side of the curtain were a few people.

"What is going on with B3?"

Jina recognized the thin reedy voice immediately, Janson. She repressed a shiver.

"The night she was pulled from the maze, sir, she underwent what they call the changing. She is still suffering from after shocks." She recognized that voice as well, Doctor Crawford. "It's all quite normal, however hers are more intense."

"Do we know what she has remembered?" Janson asked.

"No. She may not even understand what she is remembering until a situation calls for the information." Doctor Crawford explained. "I'm pretty sure seeing the boys from Maze A triggered an after shock."

"Will she compromise trial two?"

"Unlikely." Doctor Crawford said. Her voice was quite firm and carried authority. "If anything, it will motivate her more, if she is having resurfacing memories of the Subjects from Maze A."

"Excellent." Janson sounded happy. "Then we shall proceed on schedule." There was a pause. "How much longer with A1?"

"She is more of a touchier issue, Sir. Her mind is more fragile, considering all the experimental trials her mind went through, the many years before the maze and then the swipe...We need to proceed with caution. Too much forced manipulation on the mind can cause permanent damage. Her mind is more... fragile. So it will take a bit longer, if I am correcting anything we find."

"Fine. Just keep me informed."

"Always Sir." Doctor Crawford said.

"Captain." Janson barked.

"Sir?"

Jina recognized this voice as David's.

"The problem we disgusted? Has that been settled?"

"Yes sir. When they are all ready for trial 2, we will gather all of the subjects and send them down to the basement, from the loading bays- through the south exit, and they will proceed through the tunnel to the scorch."

"Excellent. What about the flat trans?"

"I sent a team to remove it, considering we never ended up using it."

"Good." Janson's voice seemed satisfied. "And the Right Arm Rebel group?"

"They have retreated back to their base somewhere in the mountains. No sign of them around the Scorch, sir. But I have men out looking." David answered.

It sounded like Janson exhaled heavily through his nose. "Group A have been integrated into the cafeteria?"

"Yes sir. Super is being served as normal."

"Good. At least that is going to plan. Now we will proceed with our regular schedule. Back to your stations."

Jina heard footsteps. And then the area was quiet. Jina deflated, placing her head in her hands. That was a lot of overhear. The curtain was pulled back and Doctor Crawford stood there with a clip board and had her regular gentle reassuring smile.

"Jina. How are you feeling, dear?"

"umm...better. The headache is gone. Just feeling...drained."

"That can happen with major pain episodes. The body struggling, and trying to stay conscious..."

"Umm...what happened?"

"You recently underwent the Changing, yes?"

Jina just nodded.

"Things will trigger memories still just under the surface of your consciousness. Usually they only happen in the 42-72 hours after the mind wakes up from the changing. But something recently triggered something in your repressed memories."

"Oh. So...I'm not dying?"

"No, I'm sorry dear, not as easy as that."

"And I'll be fine?" She asked.

"Yes dear. You may experience headaches from time to time, as the memories try to resurface. But you'll be just fine."

"Okay." She chewed her lip. "Can I leave now?"

"Yes. Let me take the IV out and one of the guards can walk you back to your room."

Jina was sitting on her bed when the door opened and Aris came in. Jina jumped up and ran at him, pulling him into a tight hug.

"Ji?" He gasped, pulling her into a bone crushing hug. "Are you okay?"

"Ya, of course. Don't be silly." Jina rolled her eyes and pushed him away.

"Don't give me that klank, you were convulsing on the ground and were gone all afternoon."

Jina shrugged again, "after shocks of the changing, apparently."

"What happened at supper?" Jina asked eagerly.

"Janson called more kids, the guys you were talking about? They seem... like trouble."

"So are we, what's your point?"

"Well...the one, he's tall, broad, but not, like, too muscular, but he's strong, you can tell, dark hair, whiskey eyes, has this, like, constant confused look..."

"Aris?"

"Yeah?"

"You're drooling a bit. Should I give you a minute?" She teased, raising her eyebrow. Folding her arms ryight across her chest and popped a hip, to hide how much she agreed with his statements about the tall dark and gorgeous boy, named Thomas.

"No!" He snapped, smacking her shoulder. Jina giggled and rolled her eyes. "ANYWAYS!" Aris yelled, his cheeks and ears pink, he threw his arms into the air and stomped to the other side of the room. "They saw some girl in the restricted hallway, being escorted by some Doctors, and caused a bit of a scene. They were all forced to their rooms."

Jina raised her eyebrows. "Where they now?" She folded her arms and tapped her chin. "That's tempting." A mischievous smile made its way on her face.

"I don't know if I like where this is going..."

"Dude. We know there's something wrong. And now...maybe they can help us."

"I guess. But you and them made a bit of a scene today...don't you think we should lay low?"

"Did you wanna stay here and I can keep you updated?"

Aris looked at Jina and then at his feet.

"Okay, you stay here then. It's okay." Jina gave his arm a gentle squeeze.

"Are you sure?" Aris asked hesitantly, slowly glancing up at her.

Jina smiled, "Yes. I'll go introduce myself. And next time I'll bring you. Don't want you squealing like a finchen' crackhead at the sight of Mr Muscles."

"Shut up Ji." Aris grumbled, his face going pink again.

"Oh come on. I lost all my girls. I gotta tease someone." She poked him a few times.

He just swatted her hands, a small smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. And then he frowned, "What if it causes another episode?"

"I guess if they are the cause to my memory episodes that's a good thing; means we can trust them. Now...did you find out where they were staying?"

"You ask that like I'm a finchen' Blondie. Please." He rolled his eyes. "Give me some credit. I saw a group of gorgeous guys and you think I wouldn't know where they were staying?"

"Aris!" Jina gasped, "you're as bad as those gossip girls!" But she smiled deviously.

Aris matched her smile. "Hall 6. Room 3. Third on the left."

"You're the best." Jina reached up and kissed his cheek.

"I know. Now go. You have two hours before Last Rounds." Aris gave her a small push towards the bed where the vent was. Jina turned and gave him another hug.

"I'd never be able to get through this without you."

"I know. Now go. I'll cover if someone comes knocking."

June wiggled through the vent and as Aris said the guys vent wasn't hard to find. Hall 6, room three. Jina hesitated and listened. They were loud and they were arguing about something.

"...no man, I can't just open the shuck door!"

"Did you try the latch?"

"Wow. Good eye Newt! They must call you Isaac Newton because that big shuck brain."

Jina snorted at the comment. The kid was snarky. She pulled herself to the vent and while they argued about trying to open the door or how to break it down. Jina shook her head, she pushed the vent cover and it popped off with ease. She pulled herself out, under the bed. She took a deep breath and then pulled herself out from under the bed. They were all crowded around the door trying to figure how to unlock the heavy steel door. They were talking about maybe using the fire extinguisher to smash the handle.

"Try jiggling the handle." Jina suggested.

"We bloody tried that!" Said a boy at the front.

"Try the handle again...maybe you didn't try hard enough." She suggested with a smirk.

"What do you think we are, stupid?" Came a sassy voice from the front.

"Did you try pulling instead of pushing?" Jina asked, raising an eyebrow, she was trying very hard not to laugh at them.

"YES!" came a very frustrated voice and someone slammed a fist on the door with an angry yell.

"You need a pass card." Jina said with a yawn while she folded her arms.

"Well that's not helpful." A dark skinned kid said, he was standing at the back of the group. He finally stepped away from the group, but was still looking at the door with a frown.

"Well..it's the only way they let you out."

"Oh...shuck."

"Yep." Jina said popping the p at the end.

The kid finally looked over his shoulder. His eyes went wide and he did a double take and screamed. The other guys turned at the scream to see Jina standing in their room. They all screamed and jumped into each other and stumbled around for a second.

"Boo." Jina yelled stepping forward. They all jumped backwards with another scream. Jina threw her head back and laughed.

"WHO THE SHUCK ARE YOU?"
"HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE?"
"WHAT THE ACTUAL SHUCK?"
"WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?"

Jina got herself under control and slowly looked at the guys. They were all tall and built. All with haunted eyes though. The tall blond, huge Asian and the tall whiskey eyed boy shove to the front. Her eyes flicked back and forth between the two of them. She could feel her heart rate speed up. Her palms became sweaty.

"You're the girl from the cafeteria." The boy she knew as Thomas said pointing at her.

"Well that's a vague statement." Jina frowned. "There are lots of girls in the cafeteria."

He pulled his eyebrows together and his full lips turned down into a frown. "You're the one who...had some kind of... seizure or something."

"After Shocks of the Changing, as it was explained to me." Jina corrected.

"Okay. So many questio-"

Thomas cut off the boy at the back's question. "How the hell did you get into our room? Who are you? You know about the changing? What maze were you in? What's going on? Why are we locked in? What happened to you? Do you know anything about Teresa?"

Jina held her hands up. "Whoa there. Stuff it ya stick. One at a time."

"Where did you shucken come from?" The Asian asked.

"Vents." Jina said simply.

The guys all opened and closed their mouths. "Now. I'm Jina. And you..." She pointed to the Asian. "You're Minho." And she turned to the middle boy, "You're Thomas..."

"How the fuck do you know our names?" Minho asked. "Wait! You're -"

"Minho! Please watch your language." The blond British guy scolded.

"Pretty sure this is an appropriate time to use some big boy words. Slim it Newt."

Jina winced with a stab of pain. The name. Newt. It was familiar too now that she heard it.

"As I was TRYING to say. You're Jina. The girl from the cafeteria who was gonna get her ass whooped by the cave man kid. The girl with the same name as the name I've remembered for 2 and a half years."

"Wait, Minho, you know her?" Thomas asked.

"Well...maybe. I woke up in the Maze with my name and the name of a girl...Jina."

Jina felt her stomach drop. Her chest felt tight and she felt incredibly hot suddenly. "Minho..." She whispered. His dark eyes x rayed her. Like he was fully seeing her for the first time. There was maybe a slight recognition in his sad angry eyes, and then they softened.

"Ji?" He whispered.

Jina bit her lip to keep the sob inside. She was very aware of all the other guys in the room watching this. He slowly stepped forwards and looked down at her. He reached a shaking hand up but then hesitated and dropped it back to his side.

"Is it really you?" He asked, she could hear the hitch in his voice.

"You grew up little Minny." She chocked. Her voice was thick in her throat.

"It seemed you did not." He smirked down at her, but she could see the unshed tears in his eyes.

"I stopped at perfection. You, it seemed had to keep growing."

He threw his head back and howled with a big belly laugh, his eyes squinted and his dimples showed up. Jina couldn't wait anymore and she threw her arms around him.

He hesitated for a second, but she felt her brother's arms wrap around her back for the first time in years. Her damn broke and she was crying into his shoulder. She felt his shoulders shaking.

"Uhh...what the bloody hell is going on?" Newt asked.

"Some kind of lovers reunion?" The black boy asked.

Jina and Minho sound apart with a look of pure disgust on their faces.

"Eww! What the finch? No!" Jina shuddered.

With tears still wet on his cheeks Minho turned to the guys.

"All you shuck faced slintheads...this is my baby sister. Jina, meet the Shanks I call friends. Guys...this is Jina."

Every jaw dropped. Jine whipped the tears off her cheeks and chuckled at their expressions.

"I think we need a buggen' explanation."

"Yes. But we gotta do it quickly. Last rounds come at 1145. And I need to be back for that. So I'll give you the quick version..."

Newt had them all sit down on the floor like they were in kindergarten. She gave them her quick summed up version of her story, up until finding out the guys were in the building. As she explained her story, she couldn't help but keep glancing at Thomas. His eyes were glued to her. He was drinking everything she was saying in. She had skipped over the part he had spoken to her once. She didn't know if he even remembered.

"So it was the same shuck thing!" Newt scowled.

"'Fraid so. But this...Gally didn't kill Tommy. Beth killed...she killed Rachel." Jina choked up. She felt a hand on her back. The boy whose name was Frypan patted her gently.

"What happened to her?"

"To who? Rachel? She died. She bled out in my arms."

"No...to uhh ... Beth?"

"I shot her." Jina said flatly.

"Oh...I'm sorry Jina." Thomas finally said. He was frowning at the floor but finally looked up at her. "You, Rachel and Aris have...have the same connection as- as Teresa and me...ya?" His eyes were searching for hope. For acceptance that he wasn't crazy.

You and I do too, Tommy. She spoke in his head. She instantly felt the comfortable familiar buzz of his presence. His eyes went wide and he stared at her. She couldn't look away. She only had a few fuzzy memories about him. She knew him but she didn't know the relationship. Friends? Coworkers? Acquaintances? A silly crush? Nothing was concrete, nothing made sense. But right now, she was lost in his curious brown eyes. Her stomach somersaulted.

Holly shit. Seriously? We...we can...can do this too? I thought I was crazy!

Nah. I'm just as crazy. From...from my memories, five of us could. But...I don't remember this...Teresa.

Really? Nothing about her?

Jina shook her head. No. Glimpses, bits and pieces, nothing really made much sense. I understand a few things now, now that I know about you guys. But nothing much else-

"Yo! Hey! Earth to E.T!" A hand waved in front of her face. Someone gave Thomas a shove. Breaking their eye contact.

"Why you guys gazing into each other's eyes?" Minho asked, suspiciously, "you falling in love?"

"Uhh...Jina and I can ummm...well you know how I told you, Teresa and I could uh, talk with our minds? Well... apparently Jina and I can too."

"No bloody way." Newt looked shocked.

"Does that mean she also worked for the creators?"

"Who?"

"The shucken bastards who tossed us into the maze!" The boy named Clint said, he had a look of suspicion on his face.

"Oh, we called them Designers. But...if you call torture, manipulation and brainwashing, blackmail, and coercively work for a sick twisted flinched up organization then sure, I worked for them."

"She's got a point." Minho shrugged. "We trust Thomas. And he said he worked for the bastards. Why would it be any different for her?"

"How do we know she's not lying?" A skinny kid named Winston asked, pointing at her with a frown. "And are you just saying that 'cause you're claiming her as a sister?"

"Why the hell would I lie?" Jina asked.

"I dunno."

"Very thought out argument, ya crackhead. Next time you accuse someone, have a better argument to back it up with."

"When was the last time I lied Winston? Thomas didn't lie he got us out. And how could her story match up like ours? It's too coincidental. Don't be a shuckface."

"Also look at their matching death glares. They are the buggen' same. Also when they smile they have matching dimples and squinty eyes." Newt pointed out.

"Right. I need to get back for Last Rounds. But they won't let you out until 8am tomorrow. You're stuck in your room until then. Sorry guys. You pissed off Janson, gotta be careful around him. Only two maybe three people I trust."

She slowly got up.

You don't trust them?

She turned her head and saw Thomas watching her intently.

No Tommy. I don't.

Me either.

I know. That's why I came here, to talk to you. I need to go, but I'll come back after Last Rounds. I need to show you something.

He just nodded. Jina slid under the bed and back into the vent.
