Chapter 25: Interigation

Doctor Crawford had a kind smile, her dark eyes crinkled when she smiled. The knot in Jina's chest loosened slightly.

"Come on Honey, let's get you checked." She said and motioned for Jina to follow.

Jina limped behind the doctor. Aris and Flossie both looked up and nodded. Dr Crawford led her to a little room that was blocked off by curtains. Inside was a small counter with a computer and medical equipment and a small flat bed with crinkly paper on it. Jina hesitantly pulled herself up onto the bed, her feet dangled off.

The Doctor sat down on the rolly stool, a clip board in her hands. She glanced at the notes on the board.

"This is your file we managed to get our hands on. It says here, you were attacked, inside the maze?"

Jina shivered. "Ya. Me and my mapping partners were exploring a section. The Griever attacked me."

"But it never stung you.."

Jina shook her head and then winced. That motion made her head throb.

"Can you give me a quick explanation of your injuries?"

Jina explained what happened, the Doctor wanted to see some of the scars from the Griever. She also asked Jina to remove her boot and sock, and checked her ankle.

"Does it still bother you?"

"Yeah. A lot." Jina answered honestly.

"Hmm. We might have to do some X-rays, and other testing. But how about that head?"

"Well I smacked it again in the maze just recently."

"Let's take a look."

The doctor did some vision tests with a flashlight and other tests. By the end, Jina wanted to curl up in a dark room. Her head hurt a lot more.

"Definitely a concussion. And I'd say the ankle has some nerve damage and some major scar tissue. Whoever treated you did a marvelous job despite the situation."

"Jill was a good healer...I was bed ridden for a solid month and a half and then on crutches for about another month and a half. But there was never any rest in the Glenn."

"I believe that." Doctor Crawford smiled sadly. "Well, let's get that blood work done, and the rest of this exam and make sure you're as healthy as we hope."

She did some other tests and reflex tests, checked her heart and lungs and blood pressure. She asked some questions about her reproductive health.

"Umm...none of us girls had it in the maze."

"None of you?" The Doctor asked shocked.

"No. At first we thought it was weird...but it was nice not having to deal with it while running. And could you imagine 60 girls all synced up at once?" Jina over exaggerated a shiver. "Poor Aris!"

"Well...I guess. However, I'd like to investigate that further, if you don't mind." Doctor Crawford was frowning at the charts and flipped through a few pages.

"My chart doesn't say anything?"

"Unfortunately it does not. And I find that quite odd. You're healthy and fit, and I'd like to understand why you wouldn't have a menstrual cycle."

"Would be helpful now that we're out...maybe I'd like kids one day."

"Yes...indeed. I'll see what I can find out and then when I come get you for x rays of that ankle, I'll hopefully have answers." Dr Crawford smiled kindly and stood up again and got the blood work equipment ready.

Once all her blood work was done and everything was done, Doctor Crawford had wrapped her ankle and given her something for the pain and then Jina was dismissed. She found Aris and Flossie waiting in some hard plastic chairs.

"Hey..."

"Hi." Aris said.

Jina sunk down. "What are we waiting for?"

"That David guy said Mr Janson wanted to talk to us, so he told us to wait."

"Oh."

They didn't have to wait long. David showed up, he nodded and then waved them forwards. The three got up and followed him out of the medical ward and down the hall. He took them on a long winding walk, white hall after white hall. They went through a card lock door and suddenly the halls weren't white, shiny and new. They were cement and looked under construction.

"We're still new to the building, trying to renovate it and get it up to standard." David explained as they passed by some workers up on the ladders welding some pipes together. He continued to lead them through halls until they stopped at a door. He opened it.

"Jina." He indicated to the room. Jina didn't move. "Director Janson wants a word with you alone. Please, I insist. The others will have their own rooms."

Jina glanced at Aris and Flossie. They both looked as apprehensive as she felt. But with a warning look from David, she swallowed her unease. She slowly stepped into the room. The door was snapped closed. Jina quickly looked around the room. She felt jumpy and skittish. The knot of anxiety was tight again. It was tight and heavy on her chest.

The room was dark, considering how bright white most of the building was. The walls were dark cement. A metal table and two chairs sat in the middle of the room. One wall was a full mirror. Jina narrowed her eyes. There was a blinking light in the corner. Her heart rate spiked and she felt a flash of heat rise in her body. She thought it was a beetle blade. It wasn't. Just a regular security camera, that was blinking red. Jina shivered. The room was cold.

Jina slowly walked to the chair, her footsteps echoed, and she sat, perched at the edge. It was cold and made her skin break out in goosebumps. Why give her a tank top in this place? Her hair was also still damp from her shower. It was cold. She was cold. Her back and shoulders were stiff, every muscle felt tight and tense- like she was ready to fight or run, whichever the situation called for.

Jina didn't know how long she sat for. But it felt like a long time. Her stomach started to growl. She had no idea how long ago she had eaten. Her eyes also felt really heavy. She really wanted a long sleep. The longer she waited the more irritated she was becoming. Her muscles were tense and coiled, her head hurt and she was exhausted.

Finally the door clicked open, making her jump.

Jina felt even more on edge. Janson was walking into the room. He had a file tucked under his arm. He clicked the door closed.

"Jina. Thank you for meeting with me. Sorry for the delay, your Doctor had some issues she wanted to get to the bottom of and needed my signature to have the tests run."

Jina just nodded once sharply. She really didn't feel like discussing her periods with this man. He gave her a tight lipped smile and sat down in the chair opposite her. He laid the folder down and placed his elbows on the table, his long finger tips together.

"So, Jina. I wanted to have a word with you, away from the others."

Jina didn't say anything. Her jaw was clamped shut so tightly her jaw was hurting. This was definitely away from the others.

"I'd like to know... What do you remember about WICKED?"

Jina was surprised by the question. She thought this was a group that fought against them. Shouldn't they know who WICKED is? Jina frowned. Something was off. The camera in the corner, the mirror - which was probably a window. Janson's question, and now he sat looking expectantly at her. She narrowed her eyes.

"Jina, my dear, you're not in trouble." He said, waving a hand. "We're just having a conversation." He slowly sat back and crossed his legs and placed the tips of his fingers together again, observing her over the top. "I'm just trying to understand."

"Understand what?" Jina asked slowly.

"Whose side are you on?" He asked.

Jina furrowed her eyebrows and frowned even more. What kind of question was that? Whos side was she on? Did they know she used to work at WICKED? Did they know something she didn't? The longer she sat in silence the bigger the knot of anxiety became.

"I remember..." She said slowly, "I used to work for WICKED."

Janson hummed and nodded once.

"And yet, they sent me into the maze." Jina spat. "I remember monsters trying to kill me. I remember watching my friends die in front of me- all horrible violent and useless deaths." Jina paused to get her emotions under control. "I'm on their side. My friends. My sister. I'm on their side.'

"Interesting." Janson nodded. Jina didn't say anything, but folded her freezing arms tight across her chest. This felt more like an interrogation than a conversation. Especially in this room.

"You say you worked for WICKED," Janson said and patted the folder in front of him. Jina's blood pressure spiked again. She hadn't paid much attention to the file. But it had her name on it, she could see her name stamped in big block letters. Her folder. What was in there? She couldn't rip her eyes off of it.

"But they sent you into the maze. Why would they do something like that?"

"I don't know. Maybe you should've asked them. They apparently infiltrated your escape team."

"Hmm. I'll keep that in mind." He paused. Jina was still staring at the folder, like she could read the information through the thick folder. Janson didn't say anything, but slid the folder slowly across the table.

"There's not much. Most of it was redacted. But...you can read what we got a hold of. It's your file."

Jina snapped her head up, her eyes wide. "Really?" She whispered.

Janson hummed and spun the folder to face her. Jina slowly reached a shaking hand out and opened the file. On the first page was a photograph of her head and shoulders. She was younger, maybe 3 years younger. Her hair was cleaned and pulled back into a slick bun at the base of her neck. Her eyes looked bright, but haunted. Even before the Maze. What had happened to her?

Janson was right most of the page had black covering the information. But she got to see some. Some made scenes. Blood type, immune or not immune, eye colour, height and weight.

But then under that it said.

Jina. Subject B3: The Elite.

"What does that mean?" She looked up to Janson, "what does B3, the Elite mean?"

Janson hummed and leaned forwards. "From my understanding, it would mean that perhaps, you were in Maze B. And elite... you are WICKEDs top choice, top candidate in their trials."

"Oh..." She responded, and then all the questions popped up, but one made it out. "why?"

"I would guess, it means, your immunity plus your ability to maneuver through the trial, and from your killzone patterns, you must be one of the top."

She had no idea what that meant. But she looked back down at the paper.

Jina
Sex: female

Possible last candidate.

Subject has experienced total memory loss; though she still holds onto two male subject A names. Has no understanding of the significance of the male subjects.

Jina stared at that- two male names from A. Thomas and Minho. She had a brother...A7. could her brother be one of the names she remembered? Possibly Minho. Thomas had spoken to her, he called himself Tommy, yet it didn't feel like a brother conversation. He had said...The voice of Tommy said he loved her. She doubted a brother would call her Hun and whisper I love you. So...maybe Minho? Or she was way off and she had no idea what was going on. She kept reading.

Subject demonstrates an unforeseen, possibly unintended, measure of influence over the other subjects. Has used leadership skills to become an influence in the other subjects. Has taken on a leadership role.

Progress continues at an unpredicted rapid pace- will need variables set in place to slow down progress. Subject has exceeded expectations.

Subject shows exploratory leadership skills, high levels of critical thinking, yet strong resistance to authority. Has stirred doubt among a few who have had resurfacing memories- will continue to monitor.

Other subjects close to B3 have shown progress in critical and strategic thinking and risk taking.

Will continue to monitor closely.

That's all there was. Everything else was filled in with black and everything else was notes from her check up with Doctor Crawford.

"So they were actually watching us." She muttered. "Bastards!"

"Indeed. They have been monitoring every subject-"

"We're kids. We're human. Not subjects. Not mice." Jina snapped.

Janson just nodded, his eyes watched her, like a predator watches it's prey before it attacks. His eyes were dark and seemed rather hungry. It made Jina uncomfortable. She closed the file and slid it back over. She wasn't sure how she felt about the information. It wasn't exactly new- but it was weird to read a report on her behaviour inside the maze- like a progress report. She leaned back and folded her arms again, trying to drive off the cold.

"I have a question for you, Mr. Janson." Jina said, she tried hard to keep the distrust and disdain from her voice.

"Indeed? And what would that question be?"

"I was informed by one of your own, David actually, that WICKED infiltrated your break out...and now... a fair number of my sisters have gone missing..."

"Yes. That was the reports that came to me as well. What is your question Jina?"

"How is that possible?"

Janson observed her for a long moment. She felt like he was x-raying her. She didn't break his eye contact and stayed as still as possible. She had this weird feeling, like he was some angry dog, break the eye contact and it shows weakness.

"WICKED is a big company. And they have a lot of resources." Janson shrugged.

Jina just hummed. She was definitely suspicious of his less than enthused answers. The knot of anxiety grew and tightened, almost choking her. Most of her girls were missing and she wanted to know where they where. Jina wanted to shake this man and demand he go out and find her sisters. The amount of guns this place had...she knew they had money and resources.

"Well. Thank you for your time, Jina. Enjoy the rest of your stay."

"That's it?" Jina asked, taken aback. That didn't seem like a long interrogation, especially since they were marched all the way over to this weird hall of interrogation rooms, again it seemed over dramatic and suspicious.

"Yeah, you've told me everything I need to know. You and your friends have all been cleared, David will lead you to your room, there will be food waiting. Doctor Crawford will be in contact soon enough. Enjoy your stay."

Janson was right. There were a few boxes of hot greasy pizza waiting for Jina, Aris and Flossie in their new room.

David dropped them off saying there would be someone to pick them up for breakfast - to join the others. As he slammed their room door shut Jina tried to get more answers, but the lock clicked and they were locked inside.

It was a small dorm room. 2 bunk beds a dresser with some extra clothes and pajamas and a small bathroom fully equipped for the three of them.

The three of them were quiet as they ate pizza and sipped from sealed plastic water bottles.

"What did Janson want?" Jina asked the other two.

"Nothing. I was left in the hall. Only you and Aris were thrown into the room. I had to stay with David in the hall."

"Wait...what?" Jina frowned, "Janson told me that you guys were both in rooms."

"Well...I was and all he asked was if I remembered anything about WICKED."

Jina took a bite of pizza slowly, thinking. "Ya he asked me that too, and then showed me a file about myself...most of it was blacked out. The whole thing seemed... Uncomfortable."

Flossie and Aris nodded in agreement.

Eyes open and we wait I guess. Aris buzzed her head.

Jina hummed in agreement. There was something definitely wrong with this place. Her gut told her so...and her gut was usually right. They just had to wait and see.
