Chapter 2: Saved By Nature

WARNING: This Chapter deals with suicide and child death.

***

Grey clouds manage to cover majority of the sky's lovely hue of blue along with the sun's warm optimistic shine. Chilled winds blew heavily through her long dark brown hair flowing as waves would during a gale. Trees with withered leaves and unhealthy tufts of scraggly weeds covered the terrain but left one area as a rough grassless surface.

A young teenage girl around 5'7 feet tall, wearing green and white school uniform attire, cautiously approached the rocky brink of the cliff. With each step she ascended further towards the edge, her slowed tentative pace gradually became much slower. The motions of her body insinuated that of someone apprehensive and irresolute, however her face displayed the complete opposite. A sense of sickening determination and purpose masked her.

Beneath the sloped edge, harbord a genuinely spectacular view. A place with vibrant colored daisies and daffodils, bright fluorescent green grass and lively trees scattered the surface. If the sun hadn't been blocked out by the gloomy clouds, the area would have glow beautifully. However, there was one specific spot that showed a promisingly wonderless sight. She leaned forward, gazing directly down the sixty foot high cliff. Her proximity to the brink was enough to ensure chills. There lied a small but dangerous and hard rugged surface.

Ivy was going to jump!!

Insane, demented, absolutely nonsensical! They would say. All mindlessly insulting her for this deemed stupid action. And just maybe, the situation did plunge definitely into those shameful categories. It is possible that what she was committing to was utterly ridiculous. She, of all people, was throwing her precious life away! What an idiot. But did that truly define her? Everything is perceived differently by every person, especially when hardly enough information was given regarding the situation.

After witnessing...no...after feeling as though she was the cause of her younger sister's death, she suffered everyday through the pain of self guilt. Her skin became pale as there was a noticeable decrease in how much food and water she would put into her body. Insomnia became an arising problem as, she had difficulty falling asleep as well as failed remain sleep if she did.

Ultimately, aside from her physical outer appearance, she could hardly care about her internal wellbeing. She soon developed an apathetic and distant personality and began to display less of her emotions towards other. Growing callously sarcastic and yet self-reproaching. Her life was in ruins.

And now the young teen was prepared to end it all with one giant impactful leap.

***

One year ago, Ivy and her little sister were sitting in a library. Since there was a connection issue in the neighborhood where Ivy's family lived, her parents dropped Ivy off at the library so she could work on her project. Her sister didn't have to go, but she insisted on staying with her big sis, thus Ivy was fully in charge of watching her. However her parents didn't worry. Ivy has always been a dependable and responsible girl, who knew the solution to fix any problem. She always managed to please and never ensured disappointment.

Ivy sat at one of the brown tables, typing on her green laptop, an eight page essay she was assigned in class. It was worth a large percentage of her English grade. The project was due in three more weeks but Ivy wasn't a procrastinator, thus she wanted to complete it as early as possible. Currently she was in the midst of writing the last page. A few moments passed when she felt a tug on her sleeve.

"Ivy! Ivy! Ivy!" a young six year old girl exclaimed excitedly; jumping up and down. The small child was only a little over three feet tall. Her hair was brown similar to Ivy's but lighter. It fell just a little over the middle of her back and was tied in two small pigtails. She wore a pink ruffled dress with a big sparkly bow on her waist.

"Yeah Jazmine," Ivy replied. But she didn't even turn to face her young excited sister, her eyes just remained locked onto the bright screen.

"Ivy there's an ice cweam shop wight there acwoss the street. Can we pwease go!" Jazmine begged mispronouncing a large majority of her words. Jazmine actually skipped first grade, which places her in the second grade but somehow she still has trouble with pronouncing her 'r's.

"Yeah that's fine but let me finish my essay. I'm almost done," Ivy answered.

"But you said your essay is due in thwee weeks,"Jazmine whined,"Plus you always have the best gwades so you don't even have to worwy about it!"

Ivy faced the pouting child and nodded. "True, but I still want to finish it now so I don't have to worry about it later and so I can play with you more," Ivy explained, pinching Jazmine's cheek.

Ivy was being actually completely honest. Indeed she does like to finish her projects early so she doesn't have to stress about it later. But it was also because she loves to play with her little sister, and school work would be a distraction.

"Weally!" Jazmine perked up. Her big hazel eyes glimmered with pure child happiness.

"Yeah! But you'll have to wait just a few more minutes."

"Okay!"

Jazmine left to go sit down at one of the little desks that was designed specifically for the younger children. She than grabbed a little book and read. About another fifteen minutes passed; Jazmine began to lose her little patience. She got up and marched back to where her older sister was typing away on the laptop; as though she was hypnotized by it.

"Ivy. Come on!" Jazmine pleaded.

"Ok ok ok. A couple of minutes I swear," Ivy said, not turning her attention to Jazmine.

"But you alweady said that like fowever ago" Jazmine whined.

No reply.

Five minutes passed and Ivy finally completed her essay. She grabbed her green laptop and stuffed it into her black bag, then threw it around her shoulder.

"Okay Jazmine, I finished," She announced, a bit louder than she intended, causing her to get rudely shushed by the old middle-aged library lady- who worked there.

"Oops. I'm sorry Miss." she apologized. She walked to the children's area. Expecting to see Jazmine sitting at the little blue table, reading a book or something.

But she wasn't there.

"Jazmine?" Ivy whispered-shouted. She began to searched throughout every inch of the library. She wasn't finding her.

"Jazmine!!" she yelled, officially not giving one care about the library rules anymore.

Ivy began asking strangers, where might her sister have gone. Describing her down to the smallest detail. Unfortunately, not one person had a clue about who she could possibly be talking about. Ivy panicked.

For the first time she, didn't know what to do.

Luckily an elderly woman approached her, and explained her how she saw a little girl wearing all pink, walking alone across the street with a small green wallet. Ivy's eyes widened. She bolted out of the Library. The minute she was outside, she saw that there had been some car accident.

She ran over, pushing her way through the crowd of people to get a closer look. She saw her sister, on the floor. Blood was leaking from every inch of her body.

Jazmine was dead.

Ivy was overcome with disbelief but also pure guilt. She dropped down onto her knees, not caring if her body was in contact with the blood that spread further across the road. Warm tears began to roll aimlessly down her face. She ignored the whispering bystanders that questioned her and policemen who tried to drag her away from the dead child's body.

All she could think about was, how she was so focused on some pointless project instead of the whereabouts of her one and only little sister. How for the first time, she actually messed up, and it resulted in her innocent sisters death. "It's my fault," she sobbed.

***

Ivy clutched at her heart as she remembered that horrendous day. The tears began to well up in her eyes once again, but she blinked them away to not allow them to fall.

"Its my fault. It's my fault. Its my fault," she repeated constantly. "And this is what I have to do to make up for my mistake."

She was just seconds from taking that leap when she thought about her parents. How would they feel if she died? They already worried themselves sick after their youngest daughter died. What would they do if their oldest left them as well? They would be truly hurt--

The edge of the cliff rumbled.

She knew what would happen if she stood up there any longer. She wanted to stay. She couldn't live with herself any longer. She was fully prepared to die! But the thoughts of it's effect rapidly flowed through her mind. It distracting her from her desire.

Is this what she really wanted?

Her time to think was up. The edge rumbled again, but this time snapped completely off. She was falling to her death, not even particularly sure if she wanted this anymore. She waved her hands fanatically, hoping she could possibly grab something to save her. To give her more time to think.

Nothing was there to help her as though the world wanted her to die.

She threw her arms out, prepared to take the fall. There's no going back now. I deserve this anyways. She thought. Her dark emerald eyes began to water.

However, right when she was about to hit the ground, a tree sprouted and caught her. She gasped loudly. Her eyes grew wide.

Ivy's heart felt as though it skipped a beat. She was breathing heavily, trying to process what just happened.

"Im----Im---Impossible--" she stuttered.

Police cars drove into the area. She saw her mom burst out of one of the cars, her dad running directly behind.

"IVY!!!" her mom yelled in agony. Her parents were worried sick.

Ivy didn't answer though. She was still astounded yet completely confused by what happened. One of the officers help her out of the tree.

"T---Th---The tr--tree it it," she stuttered, having trouble trying to explain what happened. This wasn't like her, she never stuttered. Before she could finish uttering her words was interrupted by her mom who rushed over to hug her.

Her parents were talking rapidly about how they were worried and thought she got kidnapped, etc. But most of her attention was not on them. Actually she barely heard them at all; it was as though they were mumbling or something. Her mind was still thinking about how the tree sprouted out of the ground within seconds to save her.

'H-h-how did that happen,' she thought. 'd--d--did I do that?'
