KAI
I arrived on Earth thousands of years ago, I stopped counting after the fifth millennium. It was easy for me to fit in because I was created to fit in everywhere I go. I wandered for a while before I found what I wanted to do and it's creating stuff. I own a technology company called Stark Enterprises and it's been around for while and I've been the owner since the day it opened, no one ever suspected me or wondered how I never age. I guess it's part of my charm, my powers. Stark Enterprises advance the same this world evolve and I'm well known but everything will disappear when I'm gone.
Laura wants to go home so badly that it makes me wonder where my home is. The only home I've ever known is Earth but I know it's not for long. Ma'Lya will come for me when my job is done. It's just somehow because I've been preparing for a war, I mean I'm here to protect the planet from threat but aside from meteor shower that I've diverted, there hasn't been anything remotely dangerous that can wipe it out.
In a way, Laura and I are alike. We're both alien that found themselves on Earth only I'm protecting and all Laura wants to do when she's pissed to to destroy it.
We've made progress, like real progress. I'm getting through to her and Laura is acting less a monster and more human. So making the decision to show where I work is going to do us some good. We've done almost everything and turns out Laura is adventurous. She's curious and wants to try everything, I on the other is so happy to bring this other fun side of her.
The more time I spend with her, the more I want to be with her. It sounds crazy because I'm always with her except when I'm at work, even then my mind is always on her.
I turn off the ignition and turn my head to side to look at her. Her eyes are fixed on the building, my building. If she wasn't a killer or an alien, she'd make a good fashionista. I stopped picking out clothes for her to wear the second the day she arrived and now she's slaying in everything. Today she's wearing ripped oversized highwaist black pants and pink shirt sleeved crop hoodie. I noticed her love for wrist band the second time we went shopping. She couldn't stop admiring and didn't know which to choose, so I got everything for her. She's indecisive, I know that because today her hands is filled with different types of bands: chains, leathers, rubber and materials. Someone that don't know would thing she's trying out new things, not knowing she's wearing everything because she doesn't know what to choose, something she does often. It has everything to do with her upbringing and how she wasn't given the chance to choose for herself.
"Welcome to Stark Enterprises," I say without taking my eyes off her.
She scrunches her nose and respond, "Stark Enterprises as in Malakai Stark, you own this place?" I nod. "Wow," she murmurs, totally overwhelmed.
"Well, let's go in." I already told my staff about Laura's visit and I made sure to let them know not to bother her.
She nods and opens the door at the same I do, we step out and meet in front of the car. I offer her my hand and she takes it. It's been a while since she's burned me with her touch, she's used to me touching her now and I kind of miss her saying her title. We walk hand in hand inside the building and head to the elevator.
"What do you think? Do you like it?" I don't have to ask, I know she likes it. I can tell from the way her eyes light up when we stop in front the elevator. This is her first ride because I don't want a repeat of what happened with the escalator.
She nods and her lips curls in what looks like a ghost of a smile. Laura doesn't do emotions but she shows some without meaning to. "It beautiful."
I press the button on the panel and wait for the elevator to open, I glance at Laura to see her looking curious. "You want to try?" She nods. "Press the button." She doesn't waste any time as she presses the button and luckily for her the door opens. She turns to me with her eyes widen in amusement.
I place my hand on her shoulder and lead her inside, I click the top floor button and keep her close. "This is my place of work and I want you to keep your attitude down, you know? No one knows what you are and I'd like it to be like that."
"What exactly do you do? This is place is pretty big and fancy." She comments, ignoring my warning.
"I create and build stuff."
She doesn't ask any more questions and the rest of the ride is silent. The door open, revealing the typical busy Monday morning. People walking around, chattering. And I can't stop watching at her. This is the first she's around people that's going to relate with her, sure we've gone out and been to different place but it was just the both of us, and I did the talking to people. Here, they'll want to know who she is and ask some questions. I hope she doesn't behead anyone.
"Are you okay?" I ask, pulling her attention away from everyone else.
Her lips part to speak but someone interrupt it. "Kai!" I don't have to turn to know who it is.
Hartley is my CFO and friend, we aren't close but he likes to tell people we're best friends. I drop my hand from Laura's shoulder to her waist and pull her closer, it's my way of staking my claim because Hartley is a playboy.
He comes from behind to stand in front of us. "Kai, my boy." He slaps me on the shoulder playfully and we exchange pleasantries. He moves his gaze from me to Laura, a playful grin spread on his face. I already told him not to talk or look at her, and he's doing the exact opposite of it. I won't be responsible for her actions if she finds him annoying.
"Who is this damsel?" He asks like he doesn't know, I open my mouth to tell him to go but he continues. "If you don't marry her I swear I will."
Laura chuckles and turns her head slightly to look at me. For the first time since I've seen her, she looks shy. She obviously doesn't know Hartley is just flattering me. It's his way of flirting. She knows everything there is to know about relationship, marriage and physical intimacy. Thanks to Google and YouTube.
I scoff and reply. "First, she's spoken for and second where's Millie?"
He shrugs without taking his eyes off her. He's openly gawking at her right in front of me. I'm not sure how I should feel about that but right now I'm feeling murderous. Never in my existence have I felt like this about anyone.
"She's with the boss. Go see her." At least he's listening.
"What boss? I'm the boss."
"Sorry, I meant her boss."
Millie is my friend and an assistant to the head of marketing. I want her to meet Laura because I believe she can show her somethings I can't like how to make her hair like Zazie's since Zazie has made her life mission to avoid Laura at all caught.
"Hey angel, I'm Hartley Jones." He introduces himself and offers her his hand.
I try not to laugh because I'm the only person Laura touch, so I watch her watch Hartley's outstretched hand. Instead of taking the hand, she asks, "why do you have such dirty thoughts about me? What's a B cup? And missionary, reverse cowgirl, dogg-"
"What the fuck?!" I glare at Hartley. Why the fuck was he having such thought around her?
"Wha-how the fuck?" He doesn't bother to defend himself and rush to his office. Coward.
I sigh and look at Laura, she has the curious look on her face again. "I can see your head spinning, what's up?"
"The meaning of his thoughts? Why were you angry?"
I move to stand in front of her, placing both my hands on her waist and pull her closer until our chest are touching. "B cup is a bra size and the rest are sex position. He's a pervert."
"Oh..." She seems disappointed. I don't have the time to ask why as an unexpected voice interrupt us.
"I'm sorry to interrupt you, Mr. Stark but I have Macau on the second line." My assistant, Julie informs me.
"Come on," I remove my hand from her waist and wrap my finger around her wrist and walk her to my office. I've been trying to reach Macau but no luck, I can't miss there call now.
I open the door to my office to see Millie sitting on the couch at the corner of the room. What the fuck? I know we're friends but this is extreme, entering my office without permission. And not just Millie, it's like there are having some sort of meeting in my office without me.
"Kai, who the hell is this?" She demands like she has the right to ask me that.
I tuck Laura behind me and ask, "what are you guys doing in my office early this morning without my presence?"
Ken, the head of the marketing department who is a very good friend of mine leans away from the wall beside the couch Millie's sitting on and approaches us. "We were going to surprise you for your not birthday today. When is your birthday exactly? I've been working for you for almost ten years and you've never once celebrated your birthday." He stops in front of me and his gaze goes behind me. "And who is this gem?"
I step away from Laura's front and expose her to eye gawking vultures. "Guys this is Laura. Laura, this is Ken and that's Millie." I introduce, pointing at Millie who is scowling at Laura.
"El." Laura adds.
"What?" Ken chirps in.
"Laura-El-"
"Wren. Laura Wren." I jump in. People have weird names on Earth but Laura-El is a whole new level.
"Can we leave now? I don't like the way they're staring at me. And Millie is already making plans on how to murder me in her head. I don't want to hurt your friends, Malakai. Let's leave." Her voice comes echoing in my head. I turn my head to look at her, she gives me a nod and I nod in return.
"As much as I'd love to stay and chat with you guys, I need to show Laura around." My hand goes around Laura's shoulder as I begin to back away. "Thanks guys, have fun and stay the hell away from my office."
The door closes behind me and glare at my assistant on my way out, she knows better than to let those people into my office.
"Your friends are interesting," Laura says out loud when we step into the elevator. "They are so different from you."
"Really?" I raise my eyebrows. "How can you tell?"
"I've been inside your head, Kai. I listen to your thoughts all the time but you never have wild thoughts about me, your friends are disgusting."
"Thank you for pointing it out, I haven't noticed. Sorry your trip to my office is a total dull. What do you want to do?" I ask since there's nothing fun about it.
"Movie? Millie mentioned something about going to movies with you... In her mind."
Right. We've done something but we haven't gone to the movies yet. Shit! It's Monday, I can't just leave.
"We'll go to the movies but not right now, it's Monday and I have some things to do at work. I still haven't returned Macau's call. I drop you off at home and come pick you up later."
