Chapter 5 - The diary
This was a secret none of them knew.
Jin sat on the highest step surrounding the Bowl, watching the sunrise, alone.
He would wake up early in the morning, get his school bag and walk to the Bowl to watch the sunrise. He would be alone at that time. He liked those moments of solitude.
He loved his friends but he needed this time alone. Which is why he never told any of his friends about this secret.
He used to come to the Bowl, hanging onto the index finger of his grandpa, as a child to see the sunrise. Even as a little boy the Bowl fascinated him.
For the past year his grandpa had grown weak due to old age. But Jin had never stopped coming. Going home just made him feel dull and lonely. He loved his grandpa but he hated the stillness at home.
Grandpa didn’t speak much now. He would just go to work in the nearby factory, make little money and come back home. Years of daily rut had turned him weak.
Jin helped around the house however he could. His grandpa had raised him all by himself after his parents passed away when he was just a baby.
How much ever he tried he couldn’t recollect any memories with his parents. Any knowledge he had of them were from the photographs that adorned the grey walls of his living room and whatever grandpa had told him about them.
In his alone time he wrote in his diary. He wrote everything. Each and every memory, every dream, every tiny little incident that happened in his life, with precise details.
He had gotten into this habit when he learned about Anne Frank at school. Somehow the idea of writing about his life appealed to him. It gave him company in his lonely life.
Initially when he used to come to the Bowl in the evening, he was the only one there. Sometime later Yoongi and Hoseok showed up with skate boards.
It was Hoseok who spoke to Jin first after just watching each other from a distance for a few days. Yoongi cares but he doesn’t show, Jin knew. He likes to act tough.
And then one day Taehyung came with little Jungkook. Taehyung immediately made friends with everyone.
Jungkook being shy took time. But after the initial shyness he mixed well.
Jimin came on his own. He was friendly and yet there was an air of stubbornness around him.
And then Joon. Being the eldest, Jin somehow felt responsible for the younger ones.
As he pushed his glasses up from his nose, he packed his diary into his bag. Descending the steps, he made way to his school.
Watching the sunrise and sunset at the Bowl, and his time with his friends were the only things that coloured his grey life.
