Fetching the Water
Though streets of town did Cable trudge
And want's of girl did great begrudge
Still thinking suspect woman owns
Perhaps that girl's intent had honed
Her hands to loose the captive held
To flee from town in which they dwelled.
But still they went along the path
He duty bound to guard from wrath
The girl who's face provoked the rage
Of all the men prepared to wage
The war that soon descends on head
And fear for act that more be bled.
Yet still he owns this fate at time
By words of leader man is bind
To guard the girl from all alarm
Protecting home from any harm.
Then finally pair to well then came
Where girl her current labor deigns
And hasty cast a jug to man
To have him aid in fetching plan.
"I bid thee work and help me gain
So water quick from well attained."
But man resented word she spoke
And far from chore she gave then broke.
"My feudal task's to guard your keep
An fend from any men who seeks
To lay yet any harm on head
And keep the maid from things she dreads.
Not fetch your chores or work you crafts
To do such work's below my class."
But woman spoke reviling words
Of lofty claim that maiden heard.
"Your task's to keep me safe is aid
By little things that help me wage
My daily chores and speed my work
To usher maid yet fast from hurt.
Yet sev'ral trips the maid will make
If will of man does fail abate
And grants no aid to task I hold
As maid herself the man has told."
Begruding words he knew were true
The man does take his pale and do
As maiden ask and helps he draw
The water up from well it sprawls.
And back to home they quickly go
Now back to place her family bodes.
And man at door of place does stop
With water pale he quickly drops.
But sudden words inside are heard
That cause the man from path to stir
An elder woman's voice is spoke
That peace at time of man had broke.
"Who lends you aid I bid him come
Inside my home fir works that done
A thanks I'd lend to helping hand
And know the name of aiding man."
