chapter forty four

Two days had passed since Ebon-shi had left to Azura's shrine and the Renegades had made incredible progress with the restoration of Winterhold with surprisingly enough multiple citizens, guards, and even a few of the mages from the college lent a hand with making a twelve foot high and five feet thick wall of ice as Faralda and Lianya combined the spell Wall of frost to make the perimeter defenses. Gila, Gentu, and Yamma were responsible for going to Anga's mill west of Windhelm to get lumber and deliver it back to Winterhold for construction as Yamma also used the iron ore from the whispering mine to make hinges and nails for building the homes. Tully, Suvvan, Sabrina, and Gila accompanied by Wulfric, Gray, and other citizens and guards as the Jarls son Assur helped raising the walls and the roofs while Severin, Shadow-step, and Saphira nailed up the roof one plank at a time. Salazar perched on the top of the nearby frost wall using detect life to scout for danger as the mages along with Asadelf water, wind and snowproofed the walls and roofs. The group worked from dusk to dawn rebuilding the city of Winterhold as Tolfdir and Asadelf blew away the snow on the path While the Jarl, and his wife just sat and watched glaring at the mages 'infesting' Winterholds streets and poisoning they're son's mind dispite Assur only helping with the restoration physical work. Throughout the entire time of the group's hard work and dedication to restoring Winterhold even with the mages help they were far from finished because the town had been neglected for so long it would take a long time before it would be completely done fortunately though thanks to Myra's business savvy attitude and had a courier deliver pamphlets all throughout his trip to all of skyrim's holds more people started to arrive in Winterhold not only to help restore it, but to take up residence such as a female imperial alchemist, a orc male blacksmith, even a argonian male fisherman. The group had officially finished making the guards barracks when the travelers making their way from all corners of Skyrim to Winterhold finally arrived. And instead of sitting inside their tents they even offered to help build their respective buildings which the group happily agreed to. After days of constant work Winterhold had finally been reborn. And in celebration of the new start for the once ruined city the citizens decided to throw a party in order to celebrate the new start, Gila had brought a plethora of different meat items ranging from goat, to elk and everything in between and thanks to the new fisherman they had Arctic grayling, Arctic char, and even a few of the exceedingly rare Angler. The citizens celebrated with the mages with a newfound respect for them even the guards were intermingling while also doing their duty of keeping watch. Most of them walking along the new icy wall that protected Winterhold from random animal attacks like they were victim to before. The new gate was fashioned from two sturdy spruce planks on iron hinges which allowed them to be opened inward through a drawbridge like mechanism with a counterweight courtesy of Gentu's engineering. The new blacksmith had brought the anvil and other supplies from his old workshop when he was a former blacksmith for a bandit gang he just needed to have someone build a furnace but that could come at another time since now was a time for celebrating Winterholds renewal. Just as the party was getting a full swing the Jarl just had to voice his complaints about how they needed the mages to help only for none of the citizens to even give him a sideways glance having lost all respect for him. "I can't believe you would accept those mage's help, they're the reason our home was destroyed in the great collapse!" Jarl Korir shouted angrily as the master wizard Tolfdir spoke. "It wasn't us, honestly even the archmage Savos Aren was curious about how it all came to pass." Just as the nord was about to throw a punch at the wizard an all too familiar double-sided shadowy battle axe was thrown at the Jarl's feet right between him and Tolfdir. The guards, the citizens even the other Renegades looked to see where the battle axe came from only to see Ebon-shi approaching. As three of the guards who were nearby attempted to rush him only for Ebon-shi to twist their arms and throw them over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes causing them to fall on the ground with a thump. " listen close I will only tell you this once, my ebony blade is still thirsty for blood, if your wise you will not provoke me." He said as he continued forward and retrieving his battle axe from the ground putting it back on his back revealing a strange ring on his hand.

"Jarl Korir, you say you believe that the mage's are responsible for the great collapse?" Ebon-shi asked quietly his voice eerily calm. "Of course they are! Look at their college it's still standing while half of Winterhold is in the ocean!" Jarl Korir shouted in the dunmer's face the former not even flinching at the nords outburst. "Whether they did or didn't is irrelevant, we're not talking about them we are talking about you. In the entire time of you being in charge you never once attempted to rebuild your home, or do anything to alleviate the anguish and pain your citizens have gone through. Instead all you have done is sit on your throne whining and complaining like a whimpering whelp." Ebon-shi spoke coldly with a distinct anger in his voice to the group they could tell that it was taking every ounce of self-control he had not to crush the nord's head under his ebony boot. "What was the point? Everyone had left, they were disheartened that there was no point if no one wanted to stay here." Jarl Korir said as the ebony armored dunmer shook his head in a disappointed manner. " A real leader, is someone who watches out for those in they're care and never asks anything in return. When you are in charge of a group, for a settlement like Winterhold. It is your responsibility to make sure that everyone is safe and content. You have done none of those things, you are but a child on the throne because you are blind by your hatred of the college." Ebon-shi spoke point blank directly to his face without a hint of wavering or deception in his voice. "Allow me to disillusion you, it is true that it was a cataclysm that caused the collapse I won't deny that, however it was not the college is doing, when the Red Mountain in Morrowind erupted it caused a chain of geological disruptions including the rising and falling of the sea. That is what caused the Great collapse not the college." Ebon-shi said before he turned around and walked away beforeturning his head to address his lover. "Asadelf, I'll be at the whispering mine, I'll see you all when you return." Ebon-shi spoke calmly before leaving Winterhold and walking back towards the whispering mine where him and the group were set up while they were currently in Winterhold. After their leader left the other members of the Renegades felt conflicted on going with him or staying to continue establishing relations with the people of Winterhold. Jarl Korir ordered the guards to attack the dunmer only for none of them to even pay attention to him it was clear that they had lost all respect for him and they turned their backs on him. Wulfric then declared a coup, for either Jarl Korir to step down as Jarl or to accept a challenge of nord tradition a one-on-one fight of honor against him. And unlike that Ulfric Stormcloak, I wont dishonor myself by using a shout to ease my way to victory like a coward." Wulfric said calmly as even if he did revere the way of the voice, to use it in a nord dual meant to test your might was both an insult to your opponent and to kynereth. "Do you accept, or yeild?" Wulfric asked challenging Jarl Korir to a fight of honor as in accordence to nord tradition. " I accept, this time tomorrow, here in the street." Jarl Korir awnsered in a hostile tone and stormed inside the longhouse as Saphira and gray put they hands on Wulfric's shoulders. "You'll do great tomorrow brother, then Winterhold will finally have a future." Saphira said encouragingly as the party continued through the night after a few hours Asadelf put Gentu in charge and went to check on Ebon-shi she knew him well enough to know when something was bothering him and right now when she looked in his eyes all she saw was guilt and anguish. After a few minutes of running back to the whispering mine Asadelf entered and found Ebon-shi sitting against the wall on the ground hugging his legs to his chest. "Hey love, you alright?" Asadelf asked as she kneels beside him and sitting at his side with her back against the wall. When Ebon-shi looked up at her all she saw in those red eyes that usually held so much strength and fire in them were replaced with tear stained eyes of a broken dunmer. "Hon, what happened? You were gone for days." Asadelf asked concerned as she gently hugged Ebon-shi's head to her chest to calm him as she gently rocked him side to side. After a few minutes of collecting himself Ebon-shi started from the beginning. "The night we first slept here Lady Azura showed me a vision of the whole group butchered including you, so Lady Azura summoned me to her shrine at the mountain overlooking us where I met one of her preistesses who showed me into the shrines inner sanctum." Ebon-shi explained as Asadelf listened giving her dunmer lover her complete undivided attention as she held his hands in hers. "I spoke with Azura and she told me that there was a thalmor that was related to two of the ones we killed recently and sent me to a ancient falmer stronghold, when I cleaned out the place of thalmor I was expecting a wizard, or a high up general but, all I saw, was a cradle with a little altmer baby inside." Ebon-shi said as his voice cracked as Asadelf removed his ebony helmet seeing the handsome face of her lovers twisted into a depressing look of dispair and regret Asadelf didnt say anything but rested her forehead against his. "I wanted to spare the child to badly, give her a chance at a new life out from the dominion's influence in her life, but if she ever found out what happened she could become our enemy, so i used sleeping tree sap and jarron root poison to put her in a permenent sleep so she wouldn't suffer, but the part that hurt the most was how happy she was in my arms, she reached up touching my helmet and giggling, compleatly oblivious to what was happening. After she passed  I wiped the place clean of any trace of my presence and didnt even take the weapons and armor to make it look like a accident caused by spilled achohol by a fire source." Ebon-shi admitted as Asadelf rubbed the back of his head comfortingly. "Hon, you didn't do it out of bloodlust, you did what you thought would be best for us, and her, but you showed such care to her, probably the most affection she has ever gotton because of how the dominion raise they're children. I'm sure that she is in a better place now and doesnt hate you for freeing her from a life of cruelty, just like neither I, nor they look at you any differently." Asadelf said turning to the rest of the group who were standing there listening all had solumn expressions  but none of them hated him for his decision "Did Azura tell you who her father was?" Asadelf asked as Ebon-shi nods wiping his eyes and composing himself from the scar in his heart that will haunt him for the rest of his days. "Yes, an Altmer called Aredil I think." At the mention of Aredil's name Asadelf's eyes widened and a look of dread crept up her face. "Asadelf, who is he? is he a commander or military advisor or something anong those lines?" Ebon-shi asked as Asadelf shook her head slowly before speaking in a shaky tone. "No, Aredil is not a commander, or an advisor, he is the general of the Aldmeri dominion army, and is the head of his own private elite team, The Gilded Lion's."
