chapter fifty five
(Gentu pov)
As we entered the Frostvault it led into a giant glacial cave with dwarven metal pipes running and all directions a telltale sign that this was once a massive settlement. Directly in front with a table with a single Imperial helmet and sword as well as a journal which I walked forward picking up the leather bound parchment in my hands before reading the cover aloud. "Scrapheir's journal? What or who in the oblivion is a Scrapheir?" I asked myself out loud before sitting down at the desk and reading the journal noticing the other for coming over with a curious expression I decided to read it out loud.
"So many words to describe Mhuvnak's vault. Expensive, glorious even. I'm not sure what serendipity allowed the Summerset Shadows to stumble upon it, but when Linwe wrote to me of it, I knew that it was destiny that called me to this place. My fellow Scrapheirs take my lessons to heart, but I suppose it's only one of my bloodline, my link back to the ancient dwemer, that lets me see the secrets, the lines in the machines that only a true deep one could sense. But there is power here so much power."
I finished before Shadow-step spoke. " it would appear the recently deceased leader of the Summerset Shadows had a side project going here, we must investigate with caution." Shadow-step said as I nodded. " it would appear these so called 'Scrapheirs' for a group of dwemer investigators of some sort and the leader claims to be bloodline to the dwemer." I said as we continue to down the ice cave corridor moving carefully to avoid drawing any attention to ourselves. As we rounded the corner we were face to face with one of the Scrapheirs with a pet dwarven spider, the Scrapheir wore a complete set of dwarven armor and was equipped with a dwarven bow with a single dwarven sword on his side and a quiver full of dwarven arrows and upon spotting us he immediately drew his bow and hooked an arrow into his bowstring aiming it at me. I immediately rushed forward pulling spellbreaker up as I charged forward blocking the dwarven arrows that were fired at me before hurling spellbreaker into the head of my enemy and then thrusting keening into his throat causing him to drop dead on the ground. Meanwhile not to any surprise of mine Suvvan had cleaved the dwarven spider down the middle with Jyggalag's greatsword I picked spellbreaker up back into my artificial hand and we continued moving forward. Shadow-step put on his cowl look around before speaking. "Seven enemies in the room up ahead, let's take them out." Shadow-step said as I nodded as Sabrina rushed forward with her twin scimitars and quickly slashed two of them to pieces while Gila fired three bone arrows into the heads of three of them meanwhile Shadow-step backstabbed one with his ebony daggers as Suvvan threw his claymore like a spear directly into the abdomen of another and me finishing the one Suvvan impaled by firing a crossbow bolt into his eye. Nodding to each other in agreement we continued forward at a much faster pace our resident thief kept his cowl up and would inform us whenever he spotted more enemies the only ones he couldn't detect were the automatons but the good thing about them was they made noise so we'd be able to hear them and take care of them before they spotted us. As we made our way through we noticed that the Scrapheirs were wearing different armors by status, the lower ranks had mostly the standard dwarven armor while the more higher up ones wore dwarven plate armor but most of them specifically the smaller of the bunch used dwarven mail which was the light variant of the dwarven armor sets. Once we entered the room we saw a large dwarven elevator and we spotted another Scrapheir directly to our left hand side which Gila quickly dispatched with a swift bone arrow to the back of the head. Deciding to cover all our tracks beforehand and going deeper down we spread out to wipe out anymore of the Scrapheirs that may be lurking up up here, this way we can avoid an ambush when we exit. We circled back around and then went back to the crossroad seeing one of the paths was a dead end we went down the other path revealing a large room with three more Scrapheirs. After quickly dispatching them as well as their little automaton pets from a distance we went through carefully. Once making sure there were no more left we went back to where the elevator was and I flipped the switch once everyone was on however I made certain to keep my hands clear from it this time not wanting to lose another limb. Once we got to the lower level we saw an opening with a single Dwarven spider sitting there in the middle of the room I looked over at Shadow-step who carefully gazed around before pointing where the Dwarven spider was revealing that there were three Scrapheirs sitting with their backs turned to us that I somehow didn't notice although Gila made quick work of them by shooting three bone arrows into the back of their heads killing them before they could make any noise to draw attention. We headed deeper down moving in pentagon formation with Shadow-step and Gila bringing up the rear with their bows, Suvvan and Sabrina on my right and left side and I held spellbreaker up up front to block any oncoming spells that could be thrown our way. We exited out into a large room with a bridge with large copper circular formations along the top the copper steam pipes jolting from the walls of the ice in all directions the room was so massive that you could have an entire army of dwarven centurions positioned here and wipe out all of Tamriel a thousand times over. We quickly went through taking out the enemies that were on the bridge and below us quickly eliminating our targets as we split up Gila and Sabrina taking the group on the bottom while me, Shadow-step, and Suvvan took care of the ones up here on the bridge and easily wiping them out. Just in time I ducked underneath a large fireball which almost hit me in the head before turning around raising spellbreaker up to block the other one however once the impact hit my artificial arm my digits started spasming randomly causing me to drop my shield quickly acting I pulled my crossbow off my back and put a crossbow bolt right between the high elf's eyes before quickly taking cover once they were all taken care of and taking a moment to deal with the problem and see what the damage was. Opening up the compartment on the underside of my artificial arm revealed that the impact from the fireball had knocked the multitude of complex wiring and cogs loose and unfortunately I didn't have my toolkit with me so I would be unable to repair it right now. "Damn it, alright note to self when we get back I have to make alterations to my arm and make some shocks to reduce the force of the impact. Once Gila and Sabrina reunited with me and the other two we proceeded further up until we came face to face with the vault itself
After observing it closely I came to a conclusion since it was obvious that the Scrapheirs we're desperately trying to open it that told me that they didn't reactivate the junctions required to open the vault door. I noticed another book sitting on the table as I walked over and began to read it just like before I read it out loud so the others could voice their thoughts if they had any.
" 'Find the conduits' the boss says 'they will be our salvation' the boss of raves. I followed him, I killed and stole for him, got myself kicked out of the Thalmor for him. All we did. And you know what? Even now I believe that Scrapheir can hear machines. I don't know if he's really got dwarf blood in him as he claims but I've never seen anyone who just knows their way around a ruin. So why in Phynaster's name are we just sitting around here digging up these ruins for 'conduits' while the boss sets in his vault obsessing over 'worth' there's a fortune worth of dwarven artifacts just sitting here. Boss needs to get his priorities straight or he'll have a mutiny on his hands."
I finished reading from the book looking up at the group as they all nodded as it seemed we all had the same thought, proceed forward with caution and annihilate anyone or anything that gets between us and our objective. Before I started doing anything I looked around to see if there was any indication where the conduits might be, I knew for certain that if we wanted to head these people off we would need to think quickly and rationally. On one hand we could stay here and wait for them to come back and then Ambush them after they get the conduits, but on the offhand there is no telling how long that would take and we could be stuck here for weeks which left us with little to no choice, we would have to pursue them. Picked up the other Journal that was on the other table and began to read it maybe this one would give us some sort of answers or at least a general idea of what to do even with all of my experience with the dwarven ruins I've never seen anything like this.
" I have found it! If not the source, then the entrance to the source. The deepest vaults of the deepest vaults. But they're sealed, walled off behind some contraption door bearing the visage of Mhuvnak himself. It's no matter we opened the previous vault we can open this one.
Damnable door! It defies me. No matter what I do I cannot open it. All I feel is the mocking gaze of its architect judging me, Finding Me unworthy. I am anything but! There are clear pressure plates, pneumatic pipes. This is merely another puzzle there must be valves, conduit, levers of some kind to properly pump the needed materials in and open this door.
It's been dangerous exploring deep into Frostvault, but my Scrapheels are loyal. I have sent them and the captains Within to find these conduits. Any looting can wait it will all be made irrelevant once we see the true source of Frostvaults power."
I finished reading from the journal grateful for the writer giving us a clear instructions of what we had to do, to follow the pipes they would lead us to our destinations however things will be tricky we would have to do one at a time so we didn't split up. Looking around we spotted the three doors that led to the separate Junctions we decided to take the door closest to us and headed inside we didn't have to worry about the enemies here since we already taken care of them. Once we entered we sprung a trap on the Scrapheirs going through the room and laying waste to anything that got between us and the conduit. I provided cover fire with my crossbow while resting it on my still spasming mechanical hand, Gila and Shadow-step laid down a siege of bone and ebony arrows respectively upon the Scrapheirs meanwhile Sabrina and Suvvan went to town up close and personal. Suvvan had really improved with his skills with his claymore his movements were quick and fluid almost like the boss, as he cleaved three of the Scrapheir's heads right off their shoulders with a single strike. Sabrina did her usual dashing from one to another with her two scimitars before picking up an ebony war axe off the ground and hurling it into the skull of a Scrapheir spell sword. Retrieving the axe she looked down at it with a smile before clamping it onto her lower back and pulling out her two scimitars again and proceeded the onslaught as we continued our way forward. Once we cornered one of the captains before he had a chance to retaliate he was dropped dead on the ground by a swift dwarven crossbow bolt right in his heart. We nodded to each other as I walked forward and crouched down examining the conduit noticing that it was a shock conduit that's when I understood that the conduits in question tied with the three schools of destruction magic fire, frost, and lightning. Once I started up the conduit it let out a hissing sound as we made our way back in order to start up the other two conduits.
