The Ending of Vena is not my story. It's Charlotte's story. But in a way, I'm the voice that she speaks through, and I hope I can achieve being so.

To begin on why I continued Charlotte's story—or should I say, rewrote it—I must first explain the origins of the story.

Charlotte sent ten journals chronicling her teen life to her adult life and the unfinished draft of The Ending of Vena. Among those journals, they contain explicit details about her life, about her reasons for killing herself, and about why she never told any of us.

I read all ten journals and her unfinished draft which was really short. As always, Charlotte wrote all her notes about how her story should go and how it should be like. She was a plotter, who plots everything before she writes.

Naturally, I should continue her story the way she wanted.

But I didn't, because it is this story that didn't save her. She wanted it to save her, to show her that she could live once more again, or that there was a way out. But Charlotte had given up. She saw no reason to continue, nothing to gain from her story.

That's why I rewrote her story.

Both because I would feel closer to her, and also because I wanted to write a story that would have changed her mind.

But instead of changing her mind, it changed mine.

The Ending of Vena is Charlotte's story. But just as much as I try to put her soul in from her journals, it contains mine too. At one point, it became my story too. A story about death, about what life means, about our own regrets.

I don't know if I would change minds with this book. I don't hope to because some of us no longer can be reached with hope.

But I hope, at the very least, I can show you why.

Why Charlotte killed herself.

But more importantly, why she never told us.

Why I never told anybody.

And why I decided to.
