55. You're My Best Friend
Oh, you're the best friend that I ever had
Been with you such a long time
You're my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
No one would have thought it would have been possible for the two best friends who were secretly in love with each other to get closer than they already were.
They both knew it was their last week in the same school as each other, and the last week they would be living with each other until they graduate.
Archie, Betty and Veronica were all worried for their two friends. They knew how impossibly close they were, and they knew how heart broken and lost Amethyst would be at school once Jughead left. The realisation that the two would only be interacting for a couple of hours each day hasn't settle with them, so their group of friends worried for how heart broken they would be once they could no longer see each other as much as they could now.
The two had never let each other out of their sights for the whole following day. Even when one of them took a trip to the toilet, the other half would wait outside until they were done and continue to go through the day as if it was normal.
Amethyst and Jughead didn't waste a moment. They woke up early in the moment and quickly got dressed for the day before heading straight to Pop's to have breakfast. After that, they went to school, only for Jughead to wag all of his lessons so that he could join Amethyst's classes. The teachers initially told him off, but when he told them that he will be in a different school the next day or the day afterwards, they let him sit besides Amethyst at the back of the classroom.
When lunch time rolled around, Amethyst and Jughead separated themselves from everyone and sat at their own little table at the back of the cafeteria. It wasn't until they were in a heated discussion about whether pineapple should be considered a pizza topping when Veronica sat down beside them.
"Pineapple is what makes the pizza," Veronica told them. "Without it, you may as well be eating spaghetti bolognese but without the spaghetti."
"Thank you!" Amethyst exclaimed, high fiving the girl.
"Oh, and did you guys mind if I sat here?" Veronica asked. "Betty's with Polly at the moment."
"Well, you're already sitting down at the Social Parish Table, so it doesn't really matter," Jughead told her.
Veronica chuckled. "I am. I've been sitting at it for months, so why should today be any different?"
Amethyst held her juice box into the air. "I say cheers to that."
"Jughead...." came a quiet voice. Amethyst looked up in an instance, knowing that the voice was Cheryl's. Cheryl stood at the end of their table, and Amethyst instantly noticed that she wasn't wearing anything red. She had replaced her usual red shirt with a grey one, and her lips were painted a nude colour.
"I'm sorry," she apologised. "I had no right to pummel you the way I did that day. As recompense, I'd like to give you this." Cheryl threw something towards Jughead, and Amethyst was surprised that he actually caught it. Amethyst looked over the table and noticed that it was Cheryl's most-worn spider brooch. "My iconic spider brooch. It'll catch a pretty penny at the local pawnshop. Enough to keep you in burgers and S shirts for years, if not decades."
"Cheryl, what is going on?" Veronica quietly asked, but Cheryl's gaze was now onto Amethyst.
"Amie, you have been a wonderful friend to me this past year," Cheryl told her. "You stood by me and helped me get through my brother's death, even when I had been a bitch to you all those years before. You stuck by me, you comforted me, you showed me what it felt like to be loved and cared about by someone. And as a thank you for that, I want to give you this."
Cheryl handed over Amethyst a piece of paper, and when Amethyst saw what was on it, she instantly shoved it back into Cheryl's hands.
"No, Cheryl, I can't," Amethyst said.
But Cheryl knew that she had to give her the money, because she didn't want to see another family broken up. "I'd hate for you to live with people you don't even know, separated from your family," she smiled. "And plus, I've already talked it over with your brother and social services. With this money, your brother would be able to afford a cabin and still look after you for years to come."
Amethyst quickly shook her head. "Cheryl, I-I can't take your money."
Cheryl smiled lightly and placed a hand on Amethyst's cheek. "You're too good Amethyst," she said quietly. "The world doesn't deserve someone like you." Cheryl then grabbed Amethyst's hand and transferred the paper into her hand. "You deserve this, Amie, for being the beautiful friend you are."
Amethyst stared at Cheryl in disbelief, not wanting to take her money but knowing that if she did, she would be able to live with her brother again, something she had wanted for years.
"Cheryl-"
Amethyst was cut off by Kevin running into the cafeteria and towards their table. "Guys, It's Betty's locker. It's bad. Come on."
Amethyst was pulled to her feet by Veronica's hand, and after a desperate look thrown over her shoulder towards Cheryl, Amethyst was pulled out of the cafeteria with Jughead, Kevin and now Archie hot on their tails.
The check felt hot in Amethyst's hand as she gripped onto it tighter. She knew she didn't deserve the money, yet there Cheryl was, handing it over to her like she had dropped it on the ground.
Veronica pulled Amethyst down the corridor, where they reached Betty's locker which was surrounded by a crowd taking photos. Archie pushed through the crowd first, with Amethyst right behind him.
'GO TO HELL SERPENT SLUT!' Was painted in, what Amethyst guessed was, blood on many copies of Betty's Blue and Gold article on Jughead's dad, with them all stuck to Betty's locker.
Archie stood in front of Betty to prevent her from looking at the locker anymore, and as Betty cried and went to pull it off, Amethyst grabbed onto her and pulled her away from the crowd as Archie began to take down the papers.
"Amie, I'm okay! I'm okay!" Betty told the girl as Amethyst pushed her away from the students in the hallway. "It was just a jerk with a can of spray paint."
Amethyst sighed as she looked at the girl. "I don't think it was spray paint, Bets."

Amethyst had walked Betty home. Instead of sticking with Jughead for the whole day like Amethyst had planned to, she walked all the way to the caravan park, where she hoped her brother would be.
When Amethyst made it to his tent, she noticed the motorbike sitting outside and soft music playing from inside.
"Knock knock!" Amethyst called out, before unzipping the tent, only to see Demarcus lying down with his phone playing music from the eighties. "Was this mom's?"
"Yeah," Demarcus replied, before sitting up straight. "I'm guessing I know why you're here?"
Amethyst nodded as she pulled the check out of her pocket. "I want to give it back to her. It's the right thing to do."
Demarcus sighed as he took the check out of Amethyst's hands before tearing it in half. Amethyst frowned at her brother's actions, before he reached into his pocket and pulled out another one.
"Cheryl gave me the real check, yours was fake," he said.
Amethyst frowned as she took the check out of his hand and then picked up the remains of the old one. She looked between the two of them, only just noticing how more professional the one Demarcus had was.
"Oh, I guess you're right," she said.
"Cheryl told me you wouldn't take it, so she gave me it instead," Demarcus told her. "But clearly she was wrong since it's with you right now."
"I was giving it back to her, but then I was pulled away from her and I didn't get the chance to," Amethyst said. She sighed. "What are we going to do with it?"
"I've already brought a cabin," Demarcus said as he looked down at the check.
"What! Really? That's great news," Amethyst smiled, before realising her brother wasn't smiling back at her. "Why aren't you happy about that?"
Demarcus looked up at Amethyst with a guilty look. "It may or may not be on the Southside."
It took Amethyst a few seconds to get where he was coming from, before her eyes widened. "Wait, are you serious?" She asked him.
Demarcus frowned. "Why do you seem so chipper about the idea?" He asked. "You will be forced to move to Southside High and away from all of your friends - from Jughead."
"No, no, no. That's the thing," Amethyst told him quickly. "Jughead's been placed in a foster home on the Southside, so he has to move to Southside High anyway."
Demarcus heaved a deep sigh as he dropped his head. "Of course. What a coincidence."
Amethyst attacked her brother in a hug. "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"
Demarcus chuckled as he hugged her back. "No problems, Misty. And you might want to let me go before you break my ribcage."
