46. Mess Is Mine
Talking like we used to do
It was always me and you

And when she walked down those stairs, I realised that my best friend was my soulmate. a moment, a smile; a single burst of laughter that sounded exactly like the rest of my life.
Four hours, twenty-seven minutes and forty-six seconds. That's how long it took Betty and Amethyst to get ready for Homecoming. Amethyst assumed that it would've been quicker if she knew how to put on makeup.
Amethyst had decided to pick a lighter dress, considering for the past few months she had been wearing black or red dresses. The dress she decided upon was a light blue-grey lace dress that went up at the front and hung down at the back. The dress was strapless, but Amethyst didn't mind because her boobs held up the dress. The lace was white, and it decorated the dress in little flower patterns. Veronica had paired it with gold heels and a gold bracelet.
When Amethyst had first put on the dress, she loved it. Even though it was nothing like her style, she knew she loved it from the moment she put the dress on. After Kevin, Betty and Veronica all gave her thumbs up, with Kevin getting teary from her, he claimed, "princess-look", Veronica, after a long argument, paid for the dress.
The doorbell downstairs rang, and Alice Cooper opened it up to Jughead, Demarcus and FP. Demarcus still wore his funeral suit, whereas Jughead wore the suit he wore to the start of year dance, except he had a light blue tie on this time to match Amethyst's dress. FP, considering he wasn't going to the dance, arrived in a grey long sleeved shirt and black jeans.
Betty was the first girl to walk down the stairs. All of the men smiled at the sight of the girl, and Alice began to get a little teary even though she was the one to help her do her makeup. One reaction seemed to make a smile appear on Betty's face, and that was Demarcus'. He grinned upon resting his eyes on Betty, because she looked absolutely stunning. Betty felt heat rise to her cheeks as she noticed the look Demarcus was giving her, before she stopped next to her mother.
The sound of heels coming down the stairs changed everyone's attention to the other girl. Amethyst walked down the stairs slowly, her right arm holding onto the railing because she had a funny feeling she was going to fall down the stairs due to the heels she was wearing. Demarcus let out a low whistle as Amethyst became present, he was just proud that she was his sister. FP smiled before looking at Jughead, wanting to see his reaction.
Jughead's eyes lit up drastically when his eyes settled onto his best friend. The girl was stunningly gorgeous, like a painting of a goddess brought to life. He had honestly never seen her more beautiful in his life. Sure, the dress complimented her very well, but his concentration wasn't on how well she looked in the dress. No, it was her face. Amethyst had hardly any makeup on, because, simply, she was beautiful without a cake load of makeup on. She had her nude coloured lips pursed as she walked down the stairs in concentration, careful not the trip over. Her eyes were down as she looked at the stairs, making sure that she was walking on the stairs properly.
And when Amethyst looked up and met Jughead's eyes, Jughead felt as if she had suddenly becoming even more breathtaking, even though that was already impossible. Amethyst smiled sweetly at him, her eyes sparkling like stars flaunted on the night sky. Jughead felt his lips tug into a smile, one that he couldn't simply control as Amethyst stopped to stand in front of him.
Jughead was speechless by her beauty as he numbly held the white corsage out to her. Amethyst's smile widened as she held her wrist out, and Jughead clipped the corsage around her wrist. Once he was done, he just continued to stare at her with his mouth agape, no words coming out at all. And Amethyst didn't mind, because she knew that Jughead thought she looked beautiful just from his eyes alone.
FP softly nudged Jughead, and Jughead seemed to snap out of his trance.
"Wow, you look-wow," Jughead stuttered over, chuckling nervously.
A soft tint of pink coated Amethyst's face at his compliment. "You look pretty wow too," she said. The two continued to smile at each other, so Alice cleared her throat.
"We better stop standing around and have dinner," Alice smiled. "I did make peach pie for the occasion."
•
Amethyst was on edge the whole dinner because she was just waiting for Alice to start questioning FP. Dinner was nearing an end, and Amethyst knew that she would start soon.
"Super delicious, Mrs C," Jughead complimented as Alice brought in the peach pie.
"Sure is, Alice," FP agreed. "Been a long time since I ate something that didn't come in a combo meal or a snack pack."
Amethyst chuckled lightly as she grabbed a slice of pie.
"So, FP," Alice said slowly, eyeing FP. "Betty tells me you're working for Fred Andrews now." FP nodded and looked up at her, wondering where the conversation was heading. "How do you balance that with all your other responsibilities?"
FP frowned as he looked at Jughead. "You mean like being a father?"
"And being a part of the Southside community."
Demarcus and Amethyst caught each other's gaze and both simultaneously ate some pie.
"Mom," Betty hissed.
"You can say Southside serpent, Alice. I'm not ashamed," FP replied. "And its not just me. There's a bunch of us working on Fred's site, even Demarcus here." He patted his hand on Demarcus' shoulder, causing the man to send him daggers.
"Oh yes, I forgot about you joining the serpents, Demarcus," Alice said lowly, as if only talking to herself. "So, if you don't mind me asking - I mean I'm just curious, how did you make your living before that?"
"I scraped by. Odd jobs," FP replied.
Alice looked over to Amethyst and Jughead, who was sitting opposite Betty and Demarcus. "I know that you worked for the drive-in, Jughead and Amethyst, before it was closed."
"Oh no, Jughead was the one who worked there," Amethyst told her. "I only popped in and occasionally got paid."
Alice looked at FP, who was sat at the other head of the table. "Did you find work there, too, FP?"
"Well, I hung out a bit," FP admitted, before chuckling. "What can I say? I'm a movie buff."
Alice chuckled as both Betty and Amethyst smiled. "Yeah, you went there more times then I could count," Demarcus chuckled, earning a slap on the back from the older man.
Alice cleared her throat. "So, tell me, were you upset when Hiram Lodge bought the drive-in land?"
Everyone's cheerful mood instantly vanished, and everyone besides Alice and FP looked down at their plates to avoid the heated stare off the two parents were having.
"Stuff happens," FP replied.
"Let me rephrase that question. Were you surprised?" Alice asked.
The doorbell suddenly rang, and Betty shot out of her seat in an instant.
"I'll get it," she chirped, before hurrying down the corridor.
Amethyst and Demarcus sent each other tense faces, just before Betty and her father, Hal walked in. Alice immediately rolled her eyes upon seeing the man.
"You said she wanted me to be here," Hal hushed to Betty.
"Oh, she does," Betty quipped back. "It's homecoming after all and our families should be....coming together. Right, mom?"
Alice sarcastically smiled at Hal and gestured towards the table. Betty picked up the spare dining room chair that sat in the corner of the room and brought it over towards the head of the table, due to FP having moved his chair so that he was sitting besides Jughead.
"FP, I believe you stay at the Sunnyside?" Hal asked as he sat down.
"I do, yes. And so does Demarcus," FP replied.
"I was hoping that maybe you have some vacancies down there. You see, I've been sleeping at my office down at the paper and it's getting a little chilly at night," Hal said, looking over towards Alice.
"Bet your office beats the tent I live in," Demarcus joked.
"Oh," Hal chuckled. "I wouldn't be so sure. You see, Alice here, she's been redecorating the Register." Alice sighed as she gave him a bored look. "Yeah, the other day she threw a brick through the window."
Both Amethyst and Demarcus snorted as FP chuckled.
"Is that so?" He asked.
"Keep talking, Hal, and the next brick I throw may not be at a window," Alice warned.
A mischievous smile made its way onto FP's face, and Amethyst immediately slouched in her chair. They were in for a rough night. "You remember our homecoming, Alice? Hal? Back in the day? Castle in the Clouds?" He looked at Betty. "Your mom ever tell you about that night?"
"Just that she and dad were King and Queen," Betty smiled proudly at her mom.
FP chuckled. "Yeah, they were, of hell."
"Dad, please," Jughead begged.
"No, it's a fun story, I promise," FP dismissed him. "Fred and me, we were all set to play at the dance. I was backstage with Dariela Moore, Amethyst and Demarcus' mom, to drop off some of the bands gear when we heard these voices yelling." FP looked back at Betty. "It was your mom and dad. They were fighting about....I don't know what, but it sounded like life-or-death. Now, Dariela managed to persuade me otherwise, but I know what I heard."
"Shut up, FP," Alice snapped.
"Happy to oblige if you are," he replied. "I don't care what you think of me, Alice, but don't jerk me around. Not in front of my son."
An awkward silence hung in the air, so Betty decided to place her serviette down. "This was such a nice idea, mom, but I think it's time that we get to the dance," Betty said shortly, before getting out of her seat.
Amethyst quickly got out of her seat as well and followed after Betty, wanting to get away from the adults.
