35. Need You Now

Talking next to me when I wake up next to you,
When I'm hungover too.
Cause you're the only one who comes when I'm lonely

Amethyst Moore had just finished putting on her sneakers when there was a knock on the front door. She assumed Archie answered it, because then Amethyst heard two sets of feet walk up the stairs.

Amethyst frowned, seeing that Jughead was in Archie's room with her and Fred was at his work, before opening the door and looking to see who it was.

Cheryl Blossom stood in front of Archie's bedroom with a disgusted look on her face as she glanced around

Amethyst raised an eyebrow. "You alright, Cheryl?"

Cheryl shook her head. "Small houses make me claustrophobic."

Amethyst hummed in response before Cheryl's eyes settled on what Amethyst was wearing, an even more disgusted look settling on her face.

"Holy heavens, what are you wearing?" She asked.

Amethyst looked down at her jeans, sweater and sneakers. "Something warm. It's snowing outside."

"Ew, no. You have to look nice." Amethyst pouted. "That's why I'm here, to go through your clothing and choose something more....appropriate."

Amethyst raised an eyebrow but didn't press.

"Now, do you have any red clothing?" Cheryl asked.

"Um, no. Not that I recall besides a band t-shirt," Amethyst replied before leaning against the door frame and crossing her arms.

Cheryl held a red cardigan out to Amethyst. "This is so two years ago, so I assumed you would wear it," she said.

Amethyst pouted as she took the cardigan. "Red doesn't even look good on me," she complained.

"Everyone attending wears red. It's almost a Blossom family tradition but without us having to imply it," Cheryl replied. "Trust me, you are gonna wanna wear red."

Amethyst sighed and nodded before looking back at Jughead. "Juggy, get out," she ordered.

Jughead his hands up in surrender before walking towards the door. "Whatever you say, Buttercup." Before he walked past, his placed a kiss upon Amethyst's cheek before following Archie down the stairs.

Amethyst was about to shut the door when Cheryl held her hand out. "I said I will be going through your clothes to find something decent to wear," she said.

Amethyst huffed. "I'll just choose something semi nice that I'm sure you'll like."

Cheryl rolled her eyes. "Doubt it." She pushed the door wide open and walked into Archie's room before gagging. "Why does it smell like garbage in here?"

Amethyst sighed as she closed the door and turned around. "This is what a teenage boys room smells like," she replied.

Cheryl frowned. "But Jason's never smelt like this."

"That's because you have cleaners, Cheryl, who make sure his room doesn't smell like this," Amethyst said.

Cheryl sighed before looking around the small room. "Where are your clothes?" She asked.

Amethyst pointed towards a backpack and a suitcase. Cheryl frowned. "This is all the clothes you have?"

Amethyst rolled her eyes. "Not all of us have the money to own a walk in robe, Cheryl."

Cheryl pulled a face as she bent down towards the suitcase and pulled it open. She threw a lot of shirts and jumpers out, before pulling out a pair of black jeans and a black shirt.

"This is as good as it's gonna get," Cheryl mumbled before throwing it at Amethyst who caught it. Then Cheryl pulled out a pair of black heels and frowned, holding up to Amethyst. "You own heels?"

Amethyst rolled her eyes as she grabbed them. "No, they're Veronica's. She gave Betty and I some of her clothes when she was done with them."

"How considerate of her," Cheryl mumbled before she pulled a belt out and got back up.

Amethyst awkwardly held the clothes in her arms as Cheryl stared at her. "Get changed!" Cheryl ordered.

Amethyst scrambled into Archie's bathroom and shut the door before getting out of her comfy clothes and pulling on the tight black jeans and shirt. She slipped on and did up the high heels, then put the cardigan over the top, pulling a face in the mirror at how bright it was.

Amethyst walked out of the bathroom to see Cheryl holding her makeup bag. Amethyst groaned as Cheryl pushed her back into the bathroom and made her sit down on the lid of the toilet before putting a bit of makeup on. When Amethyst noticed Cheryl pulling out her famous red lipstick, she held her hand out.

"No. I'm not having red lips," Amethyst told her.

Cheryl huffed and rolled her eyes as she put it back. "Whatever you say," she sarcastically said before pulling out a tan lipstick.

Cheryl applied the lipstick to Amethyst's lips before throwing her hair into a bun, then pinning some of it in. Cheryl stepped back from Amethyst and nodded in approval before she zipped her makeup back up.

"Come on, we'll be late," Cheryl told Amethyst before walking back into Archie's room and then out of it.

Amethyst briefly looked in the mirror, made a weird noise with her mouth, and then walked down the stairs to Archie and Jughead in the living room with Cheryl standing to the side.

Jughead smiled weirdly when he saw Amethyst and walked up to her.

"You look--"

"Weird," Amethyst finished off.

Jughead chuckled. "I was going to say 'pretty' but weird works too."

"Jughead, you can be without Amie for a few hours," Cheryl butted in by standing in between the two. "We have to go."

Cheryl pulled on Amethyst's arm and dragged her out of the house with Archie following behind. Amethyst threw a desperate look over her shoulder at Jughead, to which his held his thumbs up and grinned.

When Amethyst got into Cheryl's car, she held her middle finger up at him before she drove off.

"When Jason died, I thought I'd tapped my last tree," Cheryl sighed as Amethyst and Archie followed besides her to the large group of her family and close friends. "Now, don't be nervous. All you have to do is hold the bucket steady. I'll handle the rest."

Archie frowned when he looked up and noticed that their was a whole group of people in red. "Who are all these people?"

"Entre nous? They're daddy's bird of trustees. They smell blood in the water. That's why they're here," Cheryl replied.

"So they're here because your brother died?" Amethyst asked the girl hesitantly, as if mentioning Jason would cause her to snap.

"Yeah," Cheryl sighed. "They're worried Daddy's losing his grip on the company and are looking for a way to take it away from us."

"They're can do that?" Archie questioned.

"If they all vote together, they can," Cheryl answered. "When Jason died, it was a PR debacle. And now here's Polly, pregnant and unwed. It's not wonder they've descended upon us like some biblical plague."

The three teenagers stopped as they reached the front of the group, and just in front of Penelope and Clifford Blossom. Amethyst looked to her left and smiled lightly at Polly, who returned it.

Clifford Blossom cleared his throat before pulling out a scroll and reading it. "Nearly a hundred years ago, Grandfather Blossom came to this sacred maple grove. The annual tapping ceremony portends each season's bounty. Now, I've performed this ceremony many times in my life. My son, Jason, when he came of age, performed it, as well. In his place, I put forth my daughter, Cheryl." Clifford gestured towards Cheryl.

Cheryl smiled lightly at her father as she walked past him with Archie. Archie knelt down on the ground besides the tree and held the bucket under the flask stuck in the tree.

Cheryl seemed to uneasily look around at the crowd of people, before Archie whispered something to her, calming her down immensely.

Cheryl raised the hammer and smacked it onto the flask, making the water flow freely out of the tree. Both Penelope and Clifford sighed in relief as everyone applauded Cheryl for successfully doing it. Amethyst frowned as she clapped. She didn't get traditions if they weren't either birthdays or Christmas.

"Now let's all take the annual photo in front of the tree," Penelope called out, and everyone bunched together around the Blossom's.

Amethyst scratched her nose as she stepped back from the crowd and stood besides Archie who was next to the camera man.

"Archibald and Amethyst, come join us before the snow starts again," Clifford called out to the two.

Amethyst frowned, about to decline when Archie grabbed onto her arm and pretty much pulled her over to stand besides Polly.

"You know I hate photos," Amethyst grumbled up at Archie.

"Just smile, Amie," Archie replied, smiling as the man prepared to take the photo. Amethyst huffed as she looked towards the camera, pulling on a clearly fake smile.

The light from the camera flashed, and everyone immediately dispersed. Amethyst was about to walk towards Polly, when there was a tap on her shoulder.

Amethyst turned around, only to be met with Clifford and another man besides him with dark brown hair.

"Amethyst, I would like for you to meet a friend of mine, Robert Dunn," Clifford said as he placed a hand on the man's shoulder.

Robert smiled politely as he held his hand out to shake Amethyst's, who did.

"Amethyst after the quartz?" Robert asked and Amethyst nodded

"Yes, it was my mother's favourite jewel," Amethyst replied quickly, wanting to go back to Archie.

"Of course," Robert smiled. "It's a personal favourite of mine as well, but I always argued with Dariela that the diamond is simply the jewel above them all."

Amethyst's polite smile was quickly wiped off her face, replaced with a frown. "You knew my mother?" She asked.

Robert nodded. "Of course. Everyone knew Dariela—popular girl turned Serpent. I would've been surprised if someone didn't know her."

"Amie!" Archie called out, making the girl turn around. He gestured for her to come to him, and she held her hand up in 'just a second' before turning back around.

"I need to go see what Archie wants," Amethyst told Robert.

Robert nodded before glancing back at the boy. "That's alright," he nodded. "Is he your boyfriend?"

Amethyst almost choked on her saliva, her eyes growing to the size of saucers. "God no!" She laughed. "He's like my brother. I could never see him that way."

Robert shrugged. "Some things change over time," he said, before stepping away. "See you around, Amethyst."

Amethyst held her hand up and waved before going over towards Archie.

Archie frowned as he watched Robert walk away. "Who's that?" He asked.

Amethyst shrugged. "A friend of Clifford's apparently," she replied.

Amethyst briefly looked over her shoulder at the man, only to find that he was staring right back at her. A shiver ran down her spine as she turned back around. Amethyst had a bad feeling about Robert, but she wasn't sure what it was.
