03. Turning Page

If I had only felt the warmth within your touch
If I had only seen how you smile when you blush
Or how you curl your lip when you concentrate enough
I would have known what I was living for all along

"I can't believe you're doing this," Amethyst said as Jughead led her into the gymnasium where the dance was.

"I can't believe you're doing this," Jughead said.

"Out of the two of us, I was always the one to most likely be seen at a school dance," Amethyst said.

"That is true," Jughead said. "But if it makes you feel any better, you look great."

Amethyst grinned. "Thank you," she said. "But can I wear your beanie to cover up my seemingly fake hair?"

Jughead shook his head. "How else am I suppose to cover up my bald spot?"

Amethyst chuckled.

She then spotted Veronica pulling Kevin along from the distance and waved, Kevin waved back.

"Good evening, friends. Are you all having a good time?" Cheryl asked as she stood on the stage. Amethyst grabbed Jughead's hand and pulled him along to the dance floor to listen. "As honorary chairperson and de facto queen of tonight's semi-formal, it is my pleasure to introduce this evening's main entertainment. To know them is to be obsessed with them. Though they usually perform their own material, tonight they're making an exception and debuting a cover of the song my parents claim they were listening to the night Jason and I were conceived." Amethyst pulled a face. "This one's for you, JJ. I give you Josie and the Pussycats."

The girls started to sing and couples among the dance floor started to dance.

"Do you want to dance?" Jughead asked.

Amethyst looked up at him and grinned. "I thought you'd never ask."

Amethyst wrapped her arms around Jughead's neck and he held onto her waist.

"Remember when we use to dance together all those years ago because Jellybean wanted us to?" Amethyst asked.

Jughead smiled. "Yeah. She could easily make us do anything she wanted just with one look."

"That's because she looked all adorable and puppy like and I just couldn't say no to that face," Amethyst chuckled.

"You and Jellybean were like sisters," Jughead said.

"She is my sister," Amie said. "Even if we're not blood-related."

Amethyst smiled up at him and Jughead smiled down at her. Both of them looking into each other's eyes, reminiscing over their past together. Where they would dance like they were now to High School Musical songs because Jellybean claimed that they were Troy and Gabriella. And then getting them to act out scenes in Suite Life on Deck because she thought that they were Bailey and Cody. The two of them smiled at the memories until all they were doing was looking into each other's eyes, their feet and bodies no longer moving.

Amethyst was surprised at how easily she could get lost in Jughead's eyes. She loved how safe she felt in his presence, how safe she felt in his arms. But Amethyst also felt scared with that feeling of safety around him. She was scared that someday he would leave, that someday he would just disappear and leave a crater in Amethyst's life just as her mother had done. She was afraid of feeling that way again.

Jughead was confused. He never felt the closeness he felt when he was around Amethyst to anyone before. Not his sister, not his father. Not Archie or Betty. Jughead knew that that was probably because they were best friends, but his heart and stomach were trying to tell him something different. That maybe he was feeling something different towards Amethyst other than friendship, that maybe she meant more to him than what he thought.

"I hate dancing," Amethyst said.

"Me too," Jughead said. "Do you want to go to Pops and grab a bite to eat?"

"Yep, let's go." Amethyst grabbed onto Jughead's hand and they ran out together.

Amethyst was currently scoffing down a vegetarian burger when the doorbell of Pop's rang, signalling that someone had entered. Knowing that it was midnight and not many people came in at midnight, Amethyst turned around in her chair and spotted Archie. She rolled her eyes and turned back around, continuing on with eating her burger.

"Hey, Pop. Betty hasn't come in tonight, has she?" Archie asked.

"No, just the nighthawk's in tonight," Pop replied.

"Thanks."

Amethyst could hear Archie approaching so she sipped on her chocolate shake.

"Uh, can I sit, guys?" Archie asked.

"It's Buttercup's choice," Jughead replied.

Amethyst didn't say anything.

"Amie, can I sit there?" Archie asked.

Amethyst sighed as she scooted over, bringing her food with her.

"Isn't it a little late to be eating food?" Archie asked as he sat down beside her.

"It's never too late to eat food," Amethyst replied.

He turned to Jughead. "What're you working on?" Archie asked.

"My novel," Jughead said. "It's about this summer and Jason Blossom."

"Seventeen years old, and how will he be remembered?" Archie asked. "As captain of the water polo team?

"The Aquaholics?" Jughead said.

"I doubt it, considering how he died," Amethyst said.

"No, what I mean is was he doing everything he was supposed to do?" Archie asked. "Everything he wanted. I mean, did he even know what that was?"

Amethyst scratched her nose as Jughead changed the subject.

"Coach Clayton was in here talking to Pop Tate. Varsity?" Jughead asked Archie. "Does that make you, what, Mr Popular-Football-God now?"

"No," Archie said.

"Are you sure about that?" Amethyst asked. "Suddenly everyone loves you after you got your new body and joined the football team."

"That's not what I've been thinking about," Archie said. "I'm kind of terrified I lost my best friend tonight."

"I doubt you could lose Betty," Amethyst said.

"Whatever happened between you two, just talk to her, man. It would go a long way," Jughead said. "I mean, I should know. Considering the number of arguments me and Buttercup have been in."

"And I have won every single one of them, because the female is always right," Amethyst said.

Jughead sighed. "It would've gone a long way with me if you talked to us."

Amethyst took a sip of her drink as Archie nodded.

"Okay, I'll go and talk to her about it." Archie stood up from his chair. "Ah, see you guys at school?"

"We're always there," Jughead said.

Archie nodded and left Pop's.

Jughead and Amethyst shared looks before continuing on with doing what they were doing before Archie got there.
