The Library
Sophia Grant was heading to her job at the Sioux Falls, SD library. There were 5 libraries in the city, but she lived downtown, so the main library was the best choice. She lived in one of the townhomes just near the falls. As she was walking, a black Jeep Wrangler was driving down the street fairly slowly, it had darkly tinted windows and pulled into the parking lot of the library.
She didn't get to see who got out of the car as her phone started buzzing, She quickly pulled it out of her pocket and her screen lit up with her alarm saying it was time for work.
"Crap! I'm going to be late!"
She ran inside through the back door and put her stuff in her locker, as she was taking her jacket off her coworker Jane walked in.
"Good morning Sophia, How was your walk this morning?"
"Oh, it was fine. Hey, who drives the black jeep outside?"
"Oh! That would be our new security guard! His name is Allen Turner. He transferred here from the mall of all places."
Sophia hummed in acknowledgment and put her badge on before grabbing her water bottle and heading to the computer information desk. She sat at her desk and turned the computer on and got her checklist out for the day.
As she started writing out her checklist her other coworker Brad stopped by her desk, he had a cart full of books, movies, and CDs on the shelves.
"So, how'd that hot date with Jessica go the other night?"
"Oh it didn't, She texted me 5 minutes before she was supposed to be there and said she couldn't make it, said something about her period."
Sophia just rolled her eyes and chuckled. She happened to look up right as the new security guard walked into the main lobby and made eye contact with her.
'Holy mother of Pearl... that's him!?'
Brad looked in the direction she was staring and saw the new guard. He just smirked and walked on with his cart. Allen had worked in the Sioux Falls Police Force. He left due to family medical stuff and he couldn't be there and work all at the same time. He got a job as a security guard at the Empire Mall for a few months before transferring to the Main Library in the downtown area since it was much closer to where he lived.
He had been driving down Main Ave and saw one of the librarians walking. He thought she was very pretty but didn't realize it looked like he was being a creeper when he realized how slow he was driving. He went inside, put his stuff in his locker, and grabbed his radio, taser, and cuffs before heading out. As he appeared in the main lobby he caught the eye of the same librarian earlier.
'Dang, she is pretty. Maybe I should- nope, your not looking for anyone.'
Sophia worked on her checklist and finally started finding books to put on the on-hold shelf. As she looked around for the books on her checklist she saw the security guy talking to one of the high schoolers that came down to the library to study. It looked as if Allen was advising him on his homework. The high schooler smiled at the security guard and nodded as he wrote something in his notebook and the security guard came back towards her.
She went back to collecting the books at the guard kept walking towards her. As she was looking for a Nora Roberts book, he happened to be looking at the religious non-fiction section just across the way. He glimpsed at her while he looked at one of the many books about Jesus and his ministry.
'Why is he looking at me?'
'Why is she looking?'
They side-eyed each other until a young high school girl came by and asked Sophia where she could find a specific subject. Sophia had the young girl follow her to the military non-fiction section and suggested some authors and titles for the young girl. After she helped the high schooler, she went back to looking for her books.
Sophia had had several relationships with men. Some were Christian, some were Muslim, and some were even atheists. But none of them checked all the boxes. Most of them just wanted her to lose weight, wear lots of makeup, dress like she was going clubbing, and have sex with them.
She always had gotten attached and ended up getting her heart broken. She was currently single, and not looking for anyone new. She wanted to enjoy being single and serve at her church. She attended New Life Church every Sunday morning at 11:15 a.m., she loved having the community and being able to learn about God.
She had found being single was a lot of fun, and it was a huge blessing as well. She didn't realize how big of a blessing being single and Christian was until her last boyfriend had broken things off with her. She felt free for the first time in a long long time.
Allen on the other hand, had never found such peace or blessing. He was a firm atheist, especially after his mother had passed. She had fought breast cancer for 5 years. He was 16 when she passed away. The chemotherapy, the radiation, and the medications, all took their toll. She was only 45 when she finally passed in her sleep.
It took everything in him not to break something or someone in the waiting room where they had told him to sit and wait. His dad had left him and his mom when he was born, and said he didn't want a kid he couldn't raise his own way. So, Allen was left all alone, he and some of his teachers, both from his high school and middle school, came to the funeral. So did some of the aunts and uncles.
He spent his college years getting a major in crime scene investigation. He went to the police academy shortly after graduating and graduated with high honors. He was transferred to Sioux Falls, SD, as that was where he wanted to be placed after graduation. He had grown up in Sioux Falls between the ages of 5 and 10 before they moved to Seattle, WA, where his mom found a job at one of the hospitals.
Allen and Sophia had both promised themselves that they didn't need a partner in their lives right now. They both just wanted to stay single and live their lives. But would God tell Sophia that Allen was for her? Would the universe tell Allen that Sophia was for him? Neither of them knew if they would be friends. What if they did?
