Chapter 3

Lynn was terrified by the size of the being. She never thought about what happened after death. However, seeing what she was dragged into, she wished she lived her old life, even if it meant being without eyes and food.

"There is a task you must complete before you meet the rest of your past friends," the being said.

Lynn looked at Jack. Jack gave a weary smile.

"Dive deep into the water. You can see your old heart that is not buried and still pumping. You will feel an instant connection once you see it," the being said.

Lynn looked confused. The being looked at the glass walls.

"I see, you were blind and mute in your seventh life," the being turned and looked at Lynn.

"I see, so that's why," Jack said reflecting.

The being's eyes lit. He looked down into the ocean, and it lit partly, where an image of a pumping heart reflected.

Lynn looked at it.

"This is the heart. You must touch the heart once you see it," the being commanded. "It is in this space, under the House of Memories. Once you touch it, you will see your oldest life form connected to a cable of memories from a machine. You must remove the cable, destroy the machine, and look into the eyes of your old self."

Lynn did not want to do it.

"Otherwise," the being continued, "you will face the consequences."

Lynn was petrified. She did not move. Jack touched her shoulder.

"You will be fine. Don't worry," Jack assured her.

Lynn was still glued to the boat. The being came near her in an instant and hit her with its tail. Lynn fell into the ocean.

Surprisingly, Lynn could breathe underwater. She felt that her palm was beating harder than usual and when she looked at her left palm, there was her current heart beating inside the palm, radiating warmth throughout her body. Without another option, she dived deep into the cold ocean.

She found it amazing that creatures like different fishes existed and was mesmerised seeing the beautiful scenery. Once Lynn reached the bottom, she saw a pumping heart and felt an instant connection with it. It was above the sand, just like the being had shown her. Lynn was hesitant for a moment, but then slowly went ahead and touched the heart.

A brilliant white light shone with the intensity of a thousand suns blinding the girl. After a couple of seconds, her eyes adjusted to the onslaught of fiery photons. The temperature got warmer and the heart which had teleported to her left hand had gone back to its original place. The moment Lynn opened her eyes, what was then revealed to her was an old woman covered in wrinkles in front of her. The woman had thick, white, long hair that covered the whole marble floor. Lynn's foot was tangled in the hair. The woman had a machine near her. From the machine, a cable was connected to the woman's head.

"It's been a long time, hasn't it," the woman spoke to which Lynn kept quiet. The woman still closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry for being selfish," the woman continued, "but I want to revisit my most precious memories for the last time. Please refrain from destroying the machine until then."

Lynn was confused, but she sat on top of the tangled hair. The white hair glowed and Lynn felt all sorts of emotions which had been concealed inside her for a long time, though she did not know why she felt that way. After hours, the woman spoke again.

"You know, once upon a time, we, since we both are separated by bodies for now, had a very happy life. Life in the world of living, and especially, the life after death was wonderful. However, there was a possibility of destruction of everything I adored by the demon who found out about my life. So to eternalise our memories of our life and death, our friends and I took the demon's memory machine and connected us to it. Only our seventh reincarnation who is dead, could access our hearts to destroy the machine. We knew the path may be risky, but my friends and I agreed that it was worth eternalising the memories if there was a possibility of permanent death without memories. None of us told anyone else of our plans in fear of rejection and interference, and the result is the curse you know," the woman said.

Lynn looked at the woman. One selfish decision resulted in her terrible life.

"You are a part of me who would never experience the love I did, that was the curse. I am the embodiment of selfish love, who never wanted her precious memories erased. As a result, all my memories are in a machine, and the feelings vanished from my heart like a movie that one loses interest after watching multiple times. I lost everything and watching my precious memories fill me with a void as if they do not belong to me. All I have are regrets. As a part of me, I don't want you to make my mistake," the woman said.

"Now you can remove the cable and destroy the memory machine," the woman said to which Lynn got up and went towards her. Lynn removed the cable which was connected to the hole in the woman's head. Then Lynn pushed the memory machine and it fell. After that, the woman opened her blue eyes. Tears fell from the woman. Lynn looked at her. Just like what happened with the dog, the woman transformed into a white bird and flew off to the eternal white sky.

As Lynn blinked, she found herself back underwater. The heart of the woman glowed deep red, shrank, and transformed into another shape. It then floated towards Lynn, becoming a locket. The locket attached itself to a string and tied itself around Lynn's neck.
