~ The Death of Queen Oasis ~

     | | Blister | |

     Creak!

I opened my eyes and blinked tiredly.

Someone is awake, I thought feeling bored. Nothing new.

I lifted my head from my crossed talons feeling confused. What had I been dreaming about again?

As soon as I had thought about it, I realized immediately. I was thinking of challenging Mother to the throne. I had defeated her and I had become Queen Blister, rather than Princess Blister. The SandWings were bowing to me as their queen while Burn and Blaze watched jealously. Though, if I DID become queen, Burn would do so much more than watch. Hmm . . . I should probably kill Mother, but in a less suspicious way. Something no one would think of. Something that seems naturally realistic and not completely random. Aha! Got it! Come to think of it, I just can't wake Burn or Blaze or Mother.

I rose to my feet and stretched my neck and wings. I leaned my neck towards the pretty diamond mirror. I saw scattered scars along my face and neck and cruel, poisonous black eyes full of greed. I saw my power-hungry eyes back in the mirror and my horns curled upwards to define my regal rank and that I was intelligent.

Let me think first before I act, I sat down thoughtfully for a moment, furling my wings inwards. Burn would definitely defeat me a battle of fighting. But, on the other hand, I would be able to outsmart her. Let me see, I could beat Blaze in a trivia competition AND a battle to the death. I don't have to worry about her. Burn . . . Ugh, she may be strong, but brain over brawn. That's it! I'll fool Mother with an undetectable situation, trick Burn to her death, turn a minor SandWing skirmish into a Pyrrhia war, kill Blaze and become the SandWing Queen!

I saw my evil grin as I stared into the mirror.

I have planned this out since I was so young. Ever since I found out if I killed Mother, I would become queen, I realized it now, but I did not care.

I will be Queen soon, I vowed. After the war, I will be Queen and no puny, shadowy, lizards are going to tell me otherwise through a PROPHECY. Ugh . . . they're all poppycock, made up and stupid. NightWings are just ungrateful, cruel lizards with stunted things on their backs that they call wings. I will BURN, BLISTER AND BLAZE them if they don't choose me! I promised myself. I can outsmart both Burn and Blaze, then kill Blaze! How is that not a great plan?

I rose upwards, then stopped suddenly. How much time do I have? I slithered over to my window.

Two moons were shining brightly towards the east which was closest to the Kingdom of the Sea where the pathetic, flopping dragons dwelled.

On second thought, Queen Coral may be a good ally. She said something about a weapon she could help me with during a private, secret conversation, I tapped my chin with my talon thoughtfully.

Now, how should I kill Mother? What would make her care enough to leave her precious treasure room so I could take a peek? I lounged about, thinking and I figured it out in around five seconds. Scavengers! No one would suspect that!

I got up and slithered out of the door.

I turned left down a long hallway and crept down it quietly. I headed down the spiral staircase as quietly as I could, though I heard the faint tapping of my talons on the stone ground.

     Tap! Tap! Tap!

I entered the throne room and quietly slipped past Smolder, my brother who was talking with two other SandWings.

I snorted quietly. What kind of guard doesn't notice their own sister leaving Queen Oasis' Palace?

I crept past outside and my talons finally touched sand. I laid down. I felt the sand touching my belly, but that was not a big concern.

"Who's out there?" Smolder hissed suddenly when I was about five tail lengths away, starting to head downhill towards Scorpion Den.

Thank goodness I'm a pale gold-yellow colour. No wonder those stupid SkyWings didn't see us when they tried launching an attack! I thought.

"It's no one!" another SandWing grumbled. "Come on, tell us what happened to Burn next!"

"Right, so what happened was . . ." Smolder went back to his conversation.

Slithering downwards in the sand, I squinted about and hissed angrily, not able to see anything in the darkness.

I breathed out a small column of flames, lighting up my area of vision.

Sand was everywhere in the Kingdom of Sand and the Scorpion Den was about ten tail lengths away.

I made my way towards Scorpion Den and reached the huge Scorpion exoskeleton cave where SandWing Outclaws would go, as well as scavengers.

I flicked my black tongue in and out, smelling the air.

     Yes, scavenger scent!

I breathed out another column of flames and I saw three scavengers with a map.

I lay still in the sand, pretending to be dead.

"Tibble yibble yib," one scavenger with long fur on its head announced. It stood on two legs, but held a dangerous looking pointy thing. It looked female.

     I stared at them all.

They all held the pointy things and I rose my head slightly to look at the map.

No way! It's the Queen Oasis Palace map that was stolen and Mother almost killed Burn because of it! I realized.

The scavengers were pointing along the Entrance Hall to the Throne Room. The female leader one stabbed her pointy thing in the map on a picture that looked like a throne.

They're planning to kill the Queen, I realized, which could actually help ME.

     "Yibble Yib—" the scavenger began.

I shot upwards and the scavengers let out shrieks and yelps of fright.

Good, they fear me, I thought with a smirk. Mother would be disappointed that I'd take advantage of useless creatures like RainWings, but maybe more proud if she knew they were scavengers. Or she could be not proud at all that I would waste time with scavengers.

I stared at their pointy weapons for a moment.

What's the strength of those tiny things? Can't be stronger than talons and teeth, I concluded in my head.

Without warning, I lunged forward with two talons and grabbed the pointy weapon. The scavengers were too busy staring at me in shock to care.

I threw it at a stuffed bat hanging from the ceiling and it impaled the dead bat right in the eye.

I told Burn I was good at aiming! I thought. No worries, Burn'll be dead soon and I won't have to care.

I watched as the scavengers began climbing the scorpion exoskeleton and took back their pointy weapon.

That spear could kill Mother, I thought. I just have to show them what they want. Where would the spear be able to kill mother? Not anywhere with scales. The spot near the end of the dragon tail is a weak spot during battling, but not with these things. They're sharp enough to impale a fragile bit of flesh . . . but the only unexposed thing from scales is . . .

I suddenly looked at how I had impaled the eye of the bat. The Eye! Like the Eye of Onyx! The weakness of a dragon other than the end of the tail!

I look up and saw the woven tapestry of Queen Oasis and an idea formed in my mind.

I stomped over them and ripped off the tapestry of Queen Oasis and grabbed some gold coins from Mother's secret collection. I grabbed back the pointy stick, stabbed it in Queen Oasis' eye and grabbed the coins.

I watched them talk for awhile, then I went back to plotting.

That was a good way to interpret what I wanted, right? I watched the scavengers grab their pointy weapon again and they went back to talking. It showed that I want them to kill Mother and to take the treasure as a reward. OH THREE MOONS! I should have cut off Blaze's wing and lit it on fire to show that I wanted the Wings of Fire! Also known as the Eye of Onyx . . .

     I watched them impatiently.

Finally, I was so impatient and exhausted of waiting I shot out flames lighting everything on fire, except the entrance. They ran out and I stormed after them.

     I pointed at the palace.

They all stared at me. "Yibble?"

Groaning, I snatched them up in claws and they screamed. I spread my wings and shot off into the air. I sped towards the palace, but a few lengths away I dropped down to the sandy ground and released the scavengers.

Without a further glance at the useless scavengers I believed could help me, I sneaked past Smolder at the front entrance who was now telling a new story. " . . . Burn was humiliated and she blamed everything on me . . ."

Snorting with disgust, I headed through the Entrance Hall towards the Throne Room. I went down the right hallway and ran into Blaze.

I kept the most firm face as I could.

"You going—" Blaze began when Queen Oasis herself appeared.

Poker face expression, Blister, I told myself sternly, you've practiced for so long to avoid showing emotion or caring in your face. Apply the knowledge!

     Mother stared at us worriedly.

"OW," Blaze complained, hopping backwards with a grimace. "MOTHER, you stepped on my FOOT."

I moved out of the way watching her every move carefully.

Mother seemed to glare at me.

She knows I want to challenge her, I thought triumphantly, keeping my face calm. "What's the hurry? Is there a royal crisis? Let me guess — Smolder tried to run off with his girlfriend again."

"No, I took care of her," Mother's hostile gaze disappeared. "I'm just going to check the treasury."

"Ooo, sparkly things," Blaze yawned in a bored way. "Good night, Mother."

Such a disgrace to queen hood. She's a good sister, but a queen? Ugh. She's as smart as concussed sheep . . .

Mother hurried on and I headed after her, making sure my claws hit the stone.

Tap. Tap! TAP!

It worked.

Mother whirled around and to make sure she would not run off so my scavenger trick would work, I flared my wings and held up my talons. "Sorry to startle you. I just wondered if I could come with you."

Now I can see the Eye of Onyx if it's there, I thought triumphantly.

Mother paused and she had a suspicious look on her face. "Fine. But don't touch anything."

I smirked as she headed down the long passage. That's right, Mother. I'd follow you anyway and when I find the Eye of Onyx when you're dead, I'll be Queen!

We headed to the four treasure rooms. Everything looked normal— the doors were locked and closed.

I smelled scavenger instantly, but did not make a comment.

I watched Mother crouch down and examine the door.

"Do you smell scavenger?" Mother asked me.

"I wouldn't know what those smell like," I wrinkled my nose in disgust, as I was really good at acting. "They're too bulky and squishy for my taste."

Mother took the keys off her neck and unlocked all the doors and looked through each room, disappearing and appearing.

Finally, she appeared again her face full of loathing and rage.

"That looks ominous," I remarked.

"SCAVENGERS," Mother spit, "robbed ME. How DARE they?" She lashed her tail, hissing. "They can't have gone far. Wake up Burn and tell her to meet me outside."

"Burn?" I echoed looking towards the treasure rooms.

"Just in case there are a lot of them and we need to fight," Mother growled scathingly. "I've seen what their tiny swords can do. I'm not such a fool to go out there alone."

"Oh, no, of course not," I said. "But why Burn, when I'm here?"

Mother glared at me. "I need a real fighter. Not someone who thinks she can use her brain to get herself out of anything and isn't even as smart as she thinks she is."

"I see," I hissed coldly, feeling angry. "I'll wake her up at once." I headed towards the the corridors then turned back, wanting to know something. "What did they take?"

"Small things, for the most part. But they also took the Eye of Onyx," Mother growled.

Horror and anger filled me, but only a little bit occurred on my face. I was really good at hiding my emotions, but I NEEDED that SandWing emblem to be Queen when Mother died.

"We'll get it back," Mother promised, "and we'll have roasted scavenger for breakfast."

If you live.

Mother stormed past me and towards the nearest route to the sky. "I'm going out there. Wake Burn and hurry."

"Oh yes. Right away," I said.

Immediately, I looked at the treasure rooms, angry at myself. How could I trust scavengers to do the job? Oh well, they can still kill my mother.

I waited for a few moments by the treasure rooms, then headed up to the nearest route to the sky.

I flared my wings, spread them out and flew towards where I saw a body lying in the sand. She's dead! They did it! But I need the Eye of Onyx . . .

I flew towards the body, when suddenly a slightly larger, heavily scarred desert-coloured dragon shoved past me: Burn.

We both gazed down at Queen Oasis of the SandWings, who was no longer Queen. I stared at her eye; the scavenger weapon was lodged in place, right in the centre.

They actually understood what I meant, I thought amazed.

"Oh, no! Our mother is dead and the treasure is fine. But worst of all, none of killed her — so who should be Queen now?" Burn growled.

"I was about to challenge her!" I offered with a growl. "I would have fought her to the death for the throne! I should be Queen!"

"No, I should be Queen!" Burn yelled back. "I am the eldest and biggest and would have challenged her first!"

"Oh dear, oh dear," Blaze suddenly appeared and both of us yelped and jumped. "Well, now I should be Queen. As I am the youngest I would have the longest reign. That would be the best and good for the SandWings. Also, I am the prettiest!"

"Maybe I'll kill you both right now!" I snarled hoping I sounded confident in front of Burn.

Burn laughed. "You and what army, you weakling?"

I coiled my neck and lashed my tail, hissing. "Not a bad idea, sister. I'll go GET an army — an army of SeaWings — and I'll show you that I should be Queen!"

"I can make an alliance too!" Burn roared lashing her tail. "I'll get the SkyWings and MudWings on my side! Then we'll see who wins this war!"

"You both do that!" Blaze cut in haughtily.

If she afraid, she did not show it.

"I'll ally myself with the IceWings. Also, most SandWings want ME to be the queen!" She continued with a smug grin.

"Get out! I call refuge here!" Burn flicked her forked black tongue in and out, snapping her jaws up and down.

"Oh look, a crowd," Blaze grinned airily.

Burn and I whirled around to see all of the SandWings watching.

"I'll show them who should be Queen!" Burn lunged at my throat.

I spread my wings to fly off and jabbed my tail towards her and she leaped back. I flapped in the air, watching Burn warily.

"I— um— I'll just go," Blaze spread her wings and announced loudly. "ALL SANDWINGS WHO WANT ME, PRINCESS BLAZE, TO BE QUEEN FOLLOW ME!" She launched off into the sky, circling gracefully and waited.

I counted the SandWings hastily.

One hundred fifty.

To my amazement, sixty SandWings shot up in the air in a protective circle and she flew off.

Can't kill her now, I thought bitterly. But it's still all going according to plan.

"All of you who think I will be Queen stay out and help me get rid of Blister here!" Burn snarled up at me.

I did not know how I felt.

Conflicted. Scared that the Eye of Onyx is in an unknown location. Wary that Burn will kill me. Uncertain who the NightWings will support. Happy that Mother is dead. NOT scared of Burn. Worried that Burn might find the Eye of Onyx.

To my amazement, forty-five SandWings stayed put, while the other forty-five SandWings circled me protectively.

I lowered down to the ground and shot a column of flames at Smolder. "YOU IDIOT! YOU THINK SHE WILL BECOME QUEEN? WHAT IN THREE MOONS IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"

Smolder leaped out of the way. "Three moons, you really hate me now!"

     Burn snorted. "LEAVE!"

I stayed put, glaring at my older sister.

If I keep hold of the Stronghold, I could become Queen easier to look for the Eye of Onyx . . . on the other hand, I should find the SeaWings to ally with them, I thought.

"Very well." Burn lashed her tail, hissing angrily. "Kill them all! I don't care if they're family! Many die in war. I'LL KILL BLISTER!"

I flung myself at Burn and had my claws at her nose. She growled with pain and ignored the blood. She bit at my neck and I leaned back to dodge it. I scratched her lips and she roared in anger.

"All scales are jewel hard, especially mine," Burn boasted with a growl. "I repeat, GET OUT!" She unhooked my talons and shot flames right at me and scarred my face horribly with her talons.

     OW!

That's right! Scales around the face and necks are slightly more fragile, I recalled. I'm so smart, Burn and Blaze are so stupid, I thought to myself.

"How dare you?" I spat. I spun around and slashed my poisonous barbed tail towards her heart. She moved to the side but it grazed her shoulder.

She screamed in pain and yelled. "FIND ME CACTUS JUICE, NOW! GET OUT, BLISTER!"

Even with her shoulder grazed her glowering in pain, she was terrifying. "GO—" she retched in pain and fell awkwardly on the ground. "AWAY!"

I knew that she was stronger still and that she had been play fighting with me.

"Let's find the SeaWings then," I growled and led the SandWings to the Kingdom of Sea.

-

We made it in a full tough flying day with all the wind.

"Why, hello there." Queen Coral suddenly rose up out of the water with thirty other SeaWings. "You came to accept my alliance request?"

"Indeed," I smiled. "Is the secret weapon ready?"

"Oh yes!" Queen Coral shouted. "Meet Anemone!" She literally grabbed a smaller pink dragon and shoved her forward.

I looked at her fascinated. "Do you have a talent?"

     "I'm an animus," Anemone whispered.

YES, YES, YES! I CAN MAKE THE SKY KINGDOM CRASH DOWN ON BURN TO KILL HER! I thought in delight.

-

"Blister," the large purplish-black dragon covered his wings over our heads and I imitated him, our wings touching. "The NightWings think you will be Queen of the SandWings and we'll make sure that the Dragonets of Destiny choose you . . ."

All going according to plan, I thought to myself with a tiny smirk. "Thank you. . ."

The large NightWing nodded, spun around, and flew off.

     ". . . Morrowseer."
