Part 26
The Skylanders all look guilty. Serves them right, the jerks. But I can't help but be a little nervous about this talk now, so I'm not going to make any snide remarks about them.
"Vexelle, I'm sorry," Spyro says. "I should've let you speak earlier." "It's fine," I sigh. "No, it's not," he shakes his head. "We keep ignoring you and every time we do that we either do the wrong thing or risk someone's life. And we keep saying we'll listen to you but we don't. We shouldn't lie like that. And I-"
I make my aura visible for a moment to shut him up. It's brown. Everyone backs away quickly, so I chuckle, my aura changing to yellow. "Not all the colours are negative, you know," I say. "They all represent a different emotion. This is just my aura. You just need to be careful around me if it's white... well, or black, but I'm hoping we don't need to worry about that one."
"What's black?" Stealth Elf asked. "Corrupted by some kind of evil," I shrug. "It showed up when I had that Essence Reaper still hanging around, so I was extra careful not to accidentally let my aura out."
"It looks so familiar..." Stealth Elf remarked, teleporting over to me. I yelped and backed away quickly. Teleportation still freaks me out. "Chances are you saw it when the Essence Reaper got to you," I tell her. "They can do that to their host sometimes. You were seeing aura."
"Wow. So you can see that all the time?" She asks, impressed. "Well, I can pick and choose, but yeah," I nod. "And the different colours show different emotions... well, except for things like trees that are alive so they have auras but they don't have emotions. Then it seems to be just luck of the draw what colour they get, as far as I'm concerned."
"Cool," she nods. "So what do all the colours mean?" "I'll tell you another time," I say. "But we really need to finish up the conversation at hand." "Fair enough," she agrees, teleporting to a seat. "Speak away."
We all look to Eon, who's sat back at his desk. Jet Vac takes his place again and I do the same. Spyro then comes to stand beside me, so the others all decide to join us both, curious about what's going to happen. Eon looks at them all, then at me. I just shrug slightly. He seems to understand.
"Vexelle, you already know that I'm hoping you will either become a cadet or the Academy's first training instructor. I can promise you pay if you take the job and if you become a cadet I'm certain you will go straight into the second year."
"I'm very grateful for the offers," I reply, choosing my words carefully. "But I'm afraid I can't accept either." "Why not?" He asks the big question that everyone's wondering. All eyes go to me, awaiting the answer.
"I can't get myself involved with something that will keep me here indefinitely."
That clearly wasn't the answer everyone was expecting because they're all surprised. "What do you mean, Vexelle?" Eon asked me.
"This is committing to something I can't move along with me if I have to relocate due to me causing harm. I've got a commitment to my training, but I can move that wherever as I please. But not only can I not take this place with me, it would go against the entire point of relocation. If I hurt someone again, I can't still be around here again."
Everyone was shocked. "Why would you hurt anyone?" Jet Vac asks. "Well... one time I lost control of my powers," I say hesitantly.
"I ended up changing the emotions of the people around me so constantly it was almost impossible to keep up. And I... I drained their auras. By the time I'd finally got control back, they looked half dead. They were too weak to even move. I'm just glad they had a little aura left so I could replenish it before they died. They would've if I'd left them like that any longer. And I can't do that to anyone here. The people I did that to were close friends, almost like family to me, but all of you are super important. I'm risking you guys just by being here. If I lost control around you... I have no idea if I'd be able to save any of you."
A deadly silence resonates around the room and I curl in on myself, using my wings as a barricade to shield myself from their wide eyes and shocked faces. I can't bare to even look at them. The only reason I haven't flew away again yet is because I know I'll just have to come back here and finish the conversation anyway.
"... Vexelle, when did this happen?" Eon eventually asks. Even I can't sense his mood this time, his aura was just a neutral brown. I didn't know whether this should frighten me more or less.
"Several years ago," I reply. "I was just getting the hang of my powers. I thought I'd done so good, but then all that happened."
"And What did you do once you regained control over your powers?"
"I healed my friends, made sure they'd be alright alone and then I ran to my cave so I could focus on training more. I knew I couldn't risk it happening again."
"And has it happened since?"
"No."
"And do you think you're better in control of your powers?"
That last question annoyed me. I know why he asked it and I was expecting it, but I couldn't help but feel like he was questioning my abilities. I don't know why I did. "I've gone as far as I can go at this point. I'm in better control than I've ever been in my life."
"Then I don't see why you'd lose control again, Vexelle. It seems to me it was only inexperience controlling your powers that caused your lack of it."
I sigh, knowing there's no escape.
