Chapter 29 [~|~] Advice

Azara took her seat in between Sokka and Katara as Aang leapt to his feet to get his fortune read. After Aang disappeared around the corner, Katara turned to Azara.

"So, did you like your fortune?" Katara asked, a kind smile on her face.

"Well, she said a lot of stuff I already knew—" Azara started, only to be cut off by a smug Sokka, who proceeded to tell his sister that he had been right. "—But," Azara continued, sending a look at Sokka for him to shut up, "she said everything's going to be great, in the future anyway."

"Oh yeah, how so?" Sokka huffed, his annoyance at his earlier reading showing through.

"Well, she said my love line was really strong. So, I'll have a long and happy marriage," Azara shrugged, staring down at her palm with a small smile on her face. Sokka scoffed at the explanation, causing Azara and Katara to glare at him. "I'm sorry, is that unbelievable?"

"Well, no. But—" Sokka stammered out, but he had already pissed Azara off.

"—But, what?" Azara pressed, her tone sharp. "You know, I'm sorry your fortune wasn't what you wanted, but you don't have to rain on my parade," Azara snapped, standing up and walking away, mumbling something about using the bathroom.

Katara smacked her brother, who whined and held his head in pain. "You owe her an apology!" Katara hissed as Sokka glared at her, rubbing the back of his head. "That was so rude!"

"I didn't mean it to be! It's just that it's stupid to focus on that stuff right now! I mean we're in the middle of a war, people!" Sokka retorted, gesturing widely with his arms.

"Whatever you intended, you offended her, and you owe her an apology," Katara stated firmly as Aang returned from his fortune reading.

"Where's Azara?" the airbender asked as Katara shot another look at her brother.

"She should be out soon," Katara replied, standing up and moving to grab her shoes. As they waited outside for Azara, Sokka kicked at the rocks in the street.

"Well, now you got to see for yourselves how fortunetelling is just a big, stupid hoax," he huffed as Azara emerged quietly from the building.

"You're just saying that because you're going to make yourself unhappy your whole life," Katara pointed out, crossing her arms over her chest.

"That is not true! The woman is crazy! My life will be calm, happy, and joyful," Sokka muttered, kicking a stone, which came back and hit him in the head. "That doesn't prove anything!"

"Looks pretty joyful to me," Azara commented, causing Sokka to whirl around, his mouth open as he tried to form an apology. Azara raised a hand, stopping him. "I'm sorry for overreacting, I'm sure you didn't mean any harm. I just . . . it brought up stuff I think about sometimes."

"No, I'm sorry. That was rude," Sokka sighed, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.

"Let's call it even, alright?" Azara smiled walking around him to stand next to Katara.

"Alright," Sokka nodded quietly, a small smile on his face, as Aang led the way into the town square. Looking around, Azara was confused at the hoard of people assembled before a pagoda, all staring up at the clouds. Recognizing the man from the road in the crowd, Azara led the way over to him.

"What's with the sky?" Katara asked as the man did not move his gaze from the sky.

"We are waiting for Aunt Wu to come and read the clouds to predict the fate of the whole village," the man explained as Azara glanced up at the sky.

"That cloud looks like a fluffy bunny," Aang pointed out.

"You better hope that it doesn't. The fluffy bunny cloud represents doom and destruction," the man stated, his voice deadly serious. Azara raised an eyebrow at the accusation, sharing a look with Sokka.

"Do you even hear yourself?" Sokka huffed, shaking his head.

"The cloud reading will tell us if Mount Makapu will remain dormant for another year or if it will erupt," another villager continued, pointing at the large snow-covered peak.

"We used to have a tradition once a year of going up the mountain to check the volcano ourselves. But ever since Aunt Wu moved to the village twenty years ago, we have a tradition of not doing that," the man from the road smiled as Azara looked up at the peak with concern.

"You know, it never hurts to double check, right? Especially with a life or death situation," she stated as the crowd hushed at the sight of Aunt Wu walking over. She walked over to the pagoda before staring up at the clouds, her arms in the air as she took a moment to read them.

"Bending arrow cloud . . . good crops this year, nice big harvest," she announced, studying a page of her book. "Wavy moon-shaped cloud . . . going to be a great year for twins."

"That's concerning," Azara mumbled quietly, referring to her twin sister back in the Fire Nation. She and Azula used to be thick as thieves, hell they were twins. Fraternal twins, but still twins. Then their mother left, and everything started to unravel. Azara sighed, rubbing her head at the thought of her sister.

"And a cumulus cloud with a twisted nob coming off the end of it . . . the village will not be destroyed by the volcano this year!" Aunt Wu shouted, quickly drowned out by the cheers and shouts of the villagers. Katara ran off to get another reading from Aunt Wu as Aang, Sokka, and Azara walked through the streets of the village.

"I can't believe all these saps! Someone needs to scream some sense into them," Sokka muttered, marching around the town.

"Some people can't be convinced, Sokka," Azara reminded him gently.

"They seem happy, Sokka," Aang added.

"Not for long. I'm going to prove Aunt Wu's predictions are nonsense." Sokka stormed over to a man wearing ridiculously bright red shoes. "Hey, you, I bet Aunt Wu told you to wear those red shoes, didn't she?"

"Yeah. She said I'd be wearing red shoes when I met my true love," the man replied, a wide smile on his face.

"Uh huh, and how many times have you worn those shoes since you got that fortune?" Sokka asked, rubbing his chin.

"Everyday."

"Then of course it's going to come true!" Sokka yelled in frustration as the man's face brightened.

"Really? You think so? I'm so excited!" the man exclaimed, before walking off, leaving a frustrated Sokka behind him. Sokka kicked a rock, before standing up and crossing his arms over his chest. Azara watched as an angry turkey duck flew over, pecking at Sokka as he attempted to cover his head.

"Yeah, I think Aunt Wu's predictions are relatively spot on," Azara sighed, shaking her head at Sokka as he moved onto other villagers. Aang looked up at Azara before glancing back over at Sokka.

"You really think his life is going to be full of struggle and anguish?"

"No, but I don't doubt that a lot of the struggle in his life will be self-inflicted," Azara sighed as she watched him argue with another villager. "Besides, Aunt Wu said he had some light spots in his future. Maybe he just has to be more receptive to the light spots," Azara shrugged as they walked over to Sokka.

"I don't care what Aunt Wu told you! You have to take a bath sometimes!" Sokka shouted as a rather dirty man shrugged before walking off, smiling.

"Will you give it a rest? No one's going to listen to you," Azara sighed, grabbing Sokka by the shoulder before he could run off to harass another villager.

"Hey Sokka, you know some stuff about ladies, right?" Aang asked after a moment, causing Sokka to perk up.

"Some stuff, Aang, you've come to the right place. What can I do you for?" Sokka smirked, throwing an arm over Aang's shoulder. Azara snorted at the action, causing Aang and Sokka to turn to her.

"And what would Sokka know about girls, Aang?" Azara inquired, looking between the two boys.

"Please, I'm an expert," Sokka announced, making Azara quirk an eyebrow.

"Of course, you are. Tell me Sokka, how many girls have you kissed? Or dated?" Azara questioned, crossing her arms over her chest. As Sokka sputtered out a response, Azara turned to Aang. "Look, Aang, if you wanted advice on girls, I would start with advice from an actual girl," Azara stated, gesturing to herself as she spoke.

"Why don't I listen to both your suggestions, and see which one works best?" Aang suggested as Sokka stood up straight.

"Definitely. So that you can see that I really am an expert," Sokka replied, crossing his arms over his chest as Azara smirked at him.

"You really want to take that bet, Sokka? My instincts were right the last two times," Azara pointed out, sticking her chin up defiantly.

"We'll see about that," Sokka returned as they both turned to Aang. "So, what's up?"

"Well, there's this girl," Aang trailed off, blushing, and rubbing the back of his neck.

"I think I know who you mean," Sokka nodded, staring at Meng by a barrel. Azara followed his gaze and rolled his eyes at his obliviousness.

"You do? And you're okay with it?" Aang asked, growing more excited by the second.

"Of course, I am. And to tell you the truth, I've been picking up a subtle vibe that she likes you too," Sokka continued, smirking confidently at Azara, who shook her head.

"She does?" Aang gasped, ignoring Meng's attempts to gain his attention.

"I'm sure she's crazy about you, all you have to do is not mess it up," Sokka smiled encouragingly, squeezing Aang's shoulder.

"Really? And how do I do that?" Aang questioned, staring up at Sokka like he had all the answers in the world.

"The number one mistake nice guys like you is . . . being too nice," Sokka drawled, causing Azara to cut in, knowing that was the worst advice Sokka could possibly give Aang.

"That is not true! If you really want this girl to like you Aang, be yourself," Azara protested, crossing her arms over her chest.

"If you want to keep her interested you got to make her believe that you're aloof, like you don't really care one way or the other," Sokka instructed as Azara sighed in frustration.

"That is the exact opposite of what you are supposed to do, Aang! You're a nice guy, and she'll fall for your charm. If you act like you don't care, you'll convince her that you're not interested," Azara insisted, knowing that Aang would only make a fool of himself following Sokka's advice. Meng approached, but Aang walked past her, bidding goodbye to Sokka and Azara.

"Wow, that kid is good," Sokka commented, causing Azara to groan in frustration.

"That was horrible advice! He's only going to embarrass himself," Azara huffed as she turned around to leave. "And for spirit's sake, you don't even know which girl he likes!" Azara called over her shoulder as she walked off to find Katara.
