Truth Behind Myths
Wow, I really am a legend. I sigh and allow the Terrible Terror to fly off. "A message," I tell Lovelei. "I'll handle this one. Thank you for alerting me." Lovelei rawks and flies off again, the rest of her Night Terror team following. I sigh and return to bed.
When I wake up again, I reread the note. Do I help Berk? It would leave the island undefended, besides the dragons. But if I can remove the invading Death Song and find it a new habitat, I could save the lives of many dragons and vikings.
Shaking my head, I realise I have no choice. I'll have to fly out with either my Death Song Harmony or my Thunderdrum Screech, since they're the only dragons that wouldn't be effected by a Death Song's lure.
Then I realise something; would anyone from Berk recognise me? I was that kid who disappeared from their school in a dragon attack a few years back. If they realise who I am, it could endanger the entire Dragon Sanctuary.
A rawk rouses me from my thoughts. I look up at my Alpha Cave Dweller (the Alpha of the Omega Night Terrors, basically) Gordon. "How did you get in here, buddy?" I ask with a smile. I feel I can be my usual eighteen year old self around my dragons. I know they won't judge me.
Gordon knocks my hand up into his head and nuzzles into me affectionately. I chuckle, petting him. "What do you think I should do, eh?"
Gordon only wags his tail in response, yipping happily when I tickle him under his chin. He acts more like a dog than a dragon and is probably the one I'd most likely accidentally call a pet.
I sigh, lost in thought as I play with him. This one decision could change everything, most likely for worse instead of better. But maybe... maybe nobody will recognise me? I wasn't exactly the most popular person back then, so I wouldn't be surprised if I slipped the minds of a few people.
As if sensing my insecurity, Gordon licks my hand. I tickle his exposed stomach in response. He starts shrieking a dragon version of a laugh. I've always found it quite contagious and soon enough we're laughing together like always. After a while I reluctantly put him down. "I have to go check on Volcana's hatchlings," I tell him. "We can play again a little later."
His tail droops but Gordon complies. I pet his head one last time before walking down to the hatchery. Solar, Moon and Lily are playing with each other while Volcana watches them proudly. "How are you guys?" I ask.
The three hatchlings look to Volcana, who nods at them. Lily is the first to come closer... well, attempt to. Solar and Moon hold her back by her tiny wings. I crouch down and offer my hand patiently.
Lily is now trying to push her brothers away, but they don't allow her. Instead they toss her to Volcana and come closer to me, making sure I'm safe enough for their older sister. "I'm no threat," I tell them, knowing they're an intelligent species and can understand me even at this young age.
Moon decided to be brave and walked over to me, sniffing at my hand. I smiled at him for a moment before Lily ran past her brothers and tackled me. I hit my head on the hay-covered ground. "Ouch," I winced, tapping my head to check for blood. Thankfully there was none.
A roar was heard along with three squeaks of fear. I tried to sit up but Lily was still on my chest, so I had to settle for leaning my head around. Volcana was glaring at Lily. The Titan-Wing Gronkle came over, took her daughter off of me and helped me up, checking me over. "I'm fine, Volcana," I say to her. "Lily's a very strong dragon, that's all."
Volcana looked to Lily, who was cowering behind her brothers. I scoop her up gently. "It's okay," I tell the hatchling. "You just need to be careful, alright?" Lily nods, looking at me. I smile to her and place her back down again.
Solar and Moon have decided to come closer since their sister was safe around me. I offer my hand to them and they sniff it eagerly before nuzzling up to me. I stroke them both gently while Volcana grooms her daughter.
I play with the hatchlings until they're worn out and I know they're calmer around me. It's always important to make a connection with hatchlings at a young age, when they're more trusting around strangers. I smile as the little guys snuggle up to their mother, then I frown slightly.
"I'm leaving, I'm not sure how long for," I tell Volcana softly so I don't alert her children. Her eyes widen. "I'm going to Berk, they're under attack by a Death Song," I explain. "I can't leave them and their dragons to suffer from an invasion they can't defend themselves against."
Volcana looked down at her hatchlings, who were all fast asleep. I could tell what she was thinking. "I'll be back long before the hatchlings start growing, I promise. I can allow Smoke and Spark in to help, if you would like help with the hatchlings."
Smoke and Spark make up my Hideous Zippleback and are surprisingly helpful with hatchlings even if they can be mischievous. Volcana nods in response, not wanting to make any sounds that could wake up the baby dragons.
I pet her head before I leave for the gathering hall, where my dragons all meet up for announcements like these. I pull the rope that makes all the bells ring and it isn't long before the room starts crowding over with dragons of all shapes and sizes. It's rare for us to have meetings like this, so they know it's important.
I explain to them what I'm doing and where I'm going. I receive roars of protest in response. Stylive even uses her spines to pin me to the wall. But they know that I won't back down, especially as the safety, freedom and survival of dragons is what this sanctuary stands for, so their complaints don't last long.
I mount Harmony the minute I'm packed up and ready to set off. Screech didn't want to come as he instead wanted to help Volcana with her hatchlings. I don't force my dragons with me, even though I was sad to have to leave him as well.
Harmony and I set off on the long flight to Berk, ready to relocate this Death Song.
