Hunting Artemis

Indigo's POV:

We fly around until it's dark and I've seen the other dragon riders leave. Well, I didn't see Hiccup leave, but as Toothless is a Night Fury he's practically invisible in the darkness, so I'm pretty sure they've already left. Harmony swoops down and lands in Saffron's cave.

She perks up the moment she sees us back and I hug her as well as I can when I can barely touch her for fear of being poisoned. She makes a soft sound of happiness and I smile, pulling down my mask for a moment so she can see it.

"How about we go for that flight now?" I suggest. To be honest I'm not really feeling up to another flight right now as I've been stuck in a saddle for half the day, but I know she enjoys our rare moments together and I want to make sure we make as much memories as possible.

Obviously, she gets even more excited at the prospect, so I mount up, pulling my mask on again just in case Hiccup and Toothless are still around.

I look for them once we're outside but I don't see anything and - trust me - I've had my fair share of trying to spot a hidden Night Fury. "Harmony, you go back inside and rest up, we've got a big flight tomorrow," I tell Harmony, who nods for once and obeys instantly. Today has worn her down so she need her sleep.

"Let's go," I say to Saffron, who takes off eagerly. We zigzag our way between the trees, avoiding the obstacles in our way. Saffron and I cheer as we speed past the rush of wind, exhilaration crackling like wildfire within us, the blazing flames of which visible in our eyes.

I close my eyes, content in this moment. The breeze battering my face, the slight scent of pine needles and salty ocean air, the steady wing beats of one of my best friends... what more could a so-called 'dragon master' possibly ask for? This is pure and utter bliss!

My eyes are forced open when we come to a more than abrupt stop and I fly off of Saffron's back, luckily not touching her poison-coated body in the process. I'm flung onto the ground.

Grunting, I stand back up and look to see what caused us to crash. My eyes widen for a split second before they narrow. I knew it!

"I see you like the island, Hiccup," I state calmly to him. "Though I could hardly see Toothless there, you might not want to keep him hidden like that next time."

Hiccup pulls himself up from the ground and looks to Toothless before gasping loudly. I look to the Night Fury and copy his actions when I see some of Saffron's poison tipping the wing we flew into. Oh no.

"Stay with him," I order Hiccup immediately. I don't wait for a reply before mounting Saffron, who is already back up, and flying back to her cave. Once there, I make a dash for the nook I keep my gloves in. I also have a few spare Slitherwing poison antidotes in case of emergencies like this one.

I collect two of them just in case Hiccup was also splashed and fly back out to where Hiccup and Toothless are. The Night Fury is squealing out in pain, the poor thing. As soon as Saffron is low enough, I make the jump down to save a few seconds.

"Stay with me, bud, you're gonna be fine," Hiccup is coaxing his friend. "I need you to move out the way so I can help him," I tell Hiccup gently. "What is that stuff?" He asks, looking at the jars of medicine in my hands. "It'll cure the poison," I reply. He nods and begrudgingly moves aside.

The poison has already sunk through Toothless's shiny black scales and the rest of his body, so it's now all inside him. This doesn't give him too long to get the antidote.

"Toothless, I need you to drink this," I tell him, opening the jar. He screeches again and I use this as my chance to pour the antidote onto his tongue. The moment his jaws close he swallows.

"It'll take him a while to go back to normal, but he'll be fine," I tell Hiccup, who still seems very worried for his dragon. "Thank you so much, Artemis," he breathes out shakily. "I don't know what I'd do if I lost him."

"I know the feeling," I nod in understanding. Then my tone turns more serious. "So why exactly are you still here?"

"I heard you saying that you were going to come back, so I waited because I want to give you something from my dad."

I cock my eyebrow. "Which is?"

"He wanted to give you this as your reward for saving Berk from that Death Song," he explains, pulling a now scratched chest from some shrubbery where I presume it landed when Saffron crashed into Toothless.

I lift the lid curiously to see gold shining at me. "I cannot accept this," I state to Hiccup. "I said I never helped you for the reward and I never did."

"Then take it as a gift to thank you for saving Toothless," Hiccup persists. "Or as an apology for Snotlout following you."

"All I ask from Berk is that they don't try to discover who I am or where my island is," I tell him. "I don't need gold. I need to keep my dragons protected."

"Please just take the gold, my dad will kill me if he thinks I didn't give it to you."

I chuckle at that, knowing what Stoick can be like despite not really having met him before today. What? Word travels. "Fair enough. Fine, I'll accept the gold, but that doesn't mean my previous demand won't be met," I agree to the offer.

"Deal," he grins. He really hasn't changed a bit over the years.
