Hiccup In The Plan | Part 3
The Dragon Master began whispering into Toothless's ear. He started getting surprisingly happy about it, then his expression changed to one of determination, loyalty and pride. What did he tell him?
Toothless starts giving me a look once the Dragon Master stands up again. It's a kind of how-on-earth-are-you-not-seeing-this look, but I have no clue what he means by it. "What did you just tell him?" I ask the Dragon Master. "Nothing he didn't already know," Is his reply as he turns to start yelling at Snotlout. I just look to Toothless quizzically.
I make out from the Dragon Master's quick tongue that they are threatening Snotlout with an army of dragons if he doesn't stop annoying him, which... lets be honest, we'd all do it if we had an army of dragons at our command.
Snotlout starts backing up into Hookfang, which causes a spark of an idea to flash in the Dragon Master's eyes. They start walking round to Hookfang's front. The twins and I can't help but get closer to see what he does.
We're surprised when all he has to do is offer his hand and Hookfang immediately allows himself to be tamed for him. He's never shown this much respect for Snotlout since... ever, yet he just goes right ahead with this complete stranger. Is there something that attracts the dragons to the Dragon Master.
Toothless rawks to Hookfang something that causes the Monsterous Nightmare to look surprised and nuzzle the Dragon Master like they'd known each other for years.
"Hookfang, what are you doing?" Snotlout asks. "He's showing affection, have you never received that from him before?" The Dragon Master gives an instant reply.
Woah! I don't know where that came from, but the Dragon Master has worked out Snotlout and Hookfang's relationship exactly and found the precise things that might strike Snotlout's core. The look in their eyes proves it wasn't an accident.
"Ooooh," The twins whisper in awe at the perfectly placed insult. I find myself doing the same just as the Dragon Master looks at us.
Then - of course - the twins decide that this means the Dragon Master is the embodiment of Loki and hurry around worshipping him. I share a look with the Dragon Master and confirm that we're both thinking the same thing; what is wrong with them?
"Well they like you," I chuckle once they're out of sight. "Lucky me," he remarks sarcastically, rolling his eyes. "But now I need to go. I have a meeting with an old friend and they won't be too pleased if I don't show up on time."
"Wait, a meeting with who?" I ask him. "That's none of your concern," he replies. I'm not sure if this is about keeping their identity secret or their friend's, but I decide not to push it any further. "Oh, um... okay. Well, I'm going to find the twi-"
Speaking of the twins, they choose that moment to reappear and place 'offerings to Loki' at the Dragon Master's feet. They were more serious than I bought they would be about this.
"I believe this belongs to you."
I look from the twins and their pile to the Dragon Master, who is holding out a shiny metal contraption to me. "You gave him my spare leg?!" I shout angrily at the twins as I take it back from the Dragon Master. "He's Loki! We need to honour our god!" The twins yell back.
"Well first off, I'm not Loki," the Dragon Master cuts in. "Second, I'm in no way a 'dragon master' either."
"Are you kidding? You can tame Death Songs and Slitherwings and Toothless is crazy about you!" I argue. "You say you haven't met a dragon you couldn't train! There are so many dragons out there that I can't train, but you've worked them all out!"
He shrugs and mounts his Death Song. "Not all of them. I'm positive there are more dragons out there that I won't be able to tame. Now, you remember what we talked about?"
"You're leaving already?" I asks him. "I was only planning to be here to evade Snotlout and you see what happened to that plan," he replies. "Would you say those two need to be held down as well?" He points to the twins, who are fighting over Tuffnut's pet chicken now.
"They seem pretty distracted," I sigh at them. "Though they might miss their 'Loki'."
The Dragon Master seems happy to take their chances and flies upwards. Once Snotlout sees this, he runs to Hookfang. "Now!" The Dragon Master tells their Death Song, who fires amber and traps Snotlout in it. The force would've knocked him over if the amber didn't reach the ground as well. "Hey!" He yells in surprise.
"That's to prevent you from following me," The Dragon Master says, turning. A sort of mewling sound comes from the Slitherwing, which the Dragon Master looks to. "Thank you for your help," he tells it, causing it to rawk once and bow. The Dragon Master mimics the gesture.
"I have one more question," I blurt out. "If you're not the Dragon Master and you won't tell me who you are, what can I call you?"
"If you must call me something, then to you I am Artemis," They tell me after a minute of thought. Wait, the Dragon Master is a girl?!
"Hookfang, blast me out of this thing! That guy's crazy, trapping me in stupid Death Song amber!"
Hookfang looks between Artemis and Snotlout, then roars and slumps to the ground. My eyes widen. "Did you just do that?" I ask Artemis, worried for Toothless. "He's worn out after chasing me halfway across the archipelago and some more due to a thoughtless rider," Shes holding a laugh in. "I don't control a dragon's every move."
"Oh," well I'm embarrassed. Artemis's Death Song rawks at everyone before they fly off. "Let's go, Harmony," I hear Artemis say to it, guessing she's out of earshot. "We'll circle round and go back tomorrow, though I can't wait to tell everyone they thought I'm the god of mischief and pranks."
