Destructive Dragons
Fishlegs bombards me with questions the whole way there, sticking to my side like glue. To be honest I'm enjoying his company, even if his unhinging curiosity can be a little annoying at times.
"Hey, what's that on your back?" He asks. "My little weapon of choice," I reply. "It's a retractable double-bladed sword that's coated in Slitherwing venom." I pat the deadly weapon, which is sheathed on my back.
"Can I see it?" Astrid asks. Of course she'd be interested in something like this. I shift Valkyrie into one arm and draw my weapon. It only looks like an ordinary sword right now, but the moment I flip the second blade out it doesn't.
"You have to teach me how to make one of those," she grins. "Maybe," I agree. "Though the venom wouldn't be the easiest thing to collect if you don't know how to tame a Slitherwing."
She's about to speak again when I hear a familiar song and the dragons all adjust their course slightly. "I told you they wouldn't be happy to discover I'm not on the island," I tell Hiccup as Slitherwing Island slowly appears in the distance.
Suddenly Toothless is encased in an amber cocoon, trapping me and Hiccup in as well. I clutch a panicking Valkyrie tightly, not wanting her to fall. Around me the others start to drop like flies, all trapped.
I hit my head upon impact with the ground and black out, but when I open my eyes again I realised must've only been dead to the world for a few seconds. My skull is pounding, my left ankle is burning and Valkyrie is struggling to get me to move.
I slowly sit up as best I can with my leg still glued to Toothless. Harmony is standing over Snotlout and the twins, hissing menacingly. Clearly she remembers them. Saffron joins her, pointing her slimy tail out, ready to brush it against them.
"Girls, stand down!" I order. Their heads snap over to me and Harmony quits singing immediately. Rawking, they both hurry over to me. "Hiccup, do you still have that gel I gave you?" I ask. He wordlessly passes me the vial, holding his head just like me. I guess we both got hit.
I pour as little gel as possible over the amber encasing Toothless and Saffron lights it up, causing it to burst open. As Hiccup and Toothless get to their feet and start stretching their limbs, I attempt to stand but a pain starts streaking up my leg, causing me to fall back down.
Harmony rushes over to me, examining me carefully. "It's fine," I tell her. "Just a little sprain or something. I'll get it looked at later."
"Are you alright?" Hiccup asks, seeing that something's wrong. "It's nothing to worry about," I reply. Harmony lays down to help me mount her easier, which I'm thankful for. "Thanks, girl," I say quietly to her. She rawks and sidles over to Fishlegs, who I pour some gel on. Saffron fires at the gel, cracking the amber open. "Thanks!" Fishlegs shouts.
I then release Astrid, the twins and finally I get to Snotlout. "Harmony, you wanted a new chew toy, right?" I joke. Harmony licks her lips excitedly, causing Snotlout to scream.
"But you know you're not allowed a live pet, so I suppose we'll have to take care of that." Harmony laughs before picking Snotlout up carefully in her jaws. We let him freak out for a moment before Harmony tosses him into the air and Saffron shoots at him, breaking him free of Harmony's amber. He lands in a tree, screeching at the top of his lungs.
"Oh how I love seeing him squirm," I say dramatically, earning more laughter. "Hookfang! Get me down right now!" Snotlout yells. I look to Hookfang, who is free and not doing anything other than rolling his eyes. "Give him a minute, he's still inside the amber," I lie. "Spoken like a true Loki," The twins both snicker from behind me.
"Um, these dragons won't hurt us, right?" Fishlegs asks nervously. I turn and realise he's eyeing Saffron cautiously, especially since more and more Slitherwings are surrounding us.
The whole pod is here and hissing venomously along with Saffron, though not at me. Hiccup, Snotlout and the twins are their main concern right now, though Astrid and Fishlegs are also in for the fun.
Saffron looks at me, asking if they're alright. I point to the floor, silently telling her to back down. She looks unsure, but let's out an earsplitting screech anyway. The others all start to look afraid, as though she'd just ordered her pod to attack them. To be fair, to them it probably would sound like it.
The pod silence, bow and retreat as usual, not questioning their leader out of trust, admiration and loyalty. It's almost like how I run my island, though I doubt the dragons see me as admirable. I don't fight my battles, I erase memories or let them do the fighting for me. Hardly admirable at all, more like the coward's way out.
"You've trained a whole Slitherwing pod? That's amazing!" Fishlegs says in awe of their retreat. "Lucky for me, I'm actually just on good terms with their leader," I reply, petting Saffron gratefully. She coos gently.
"Can someone get me down from this tree?!" Snotlout yells. "You heard the creep," I chuckle to Hookfang, who nuzzles me before flying off to fetch Snotlout.
"Why do the dragons all like you so much?" Fishlegs asks for the millionth time. "I told you, they know something you don't," I reply. "Though I really should get going now. I'm very behind schedule now and I'm late for some business meetings."
"You could always come to Berk again, you know," Hiccup smiles. "Hiccup, Berk has no more to offer me than you I have to offer it. I came for business, nothing else. I'll only ever need to come back if I need to trade around or if there's more business to attend to."
"Well you're always welcome anyway," he declares. "I appreciate it," I say honestly. "But I should get going. Maybe one day we'll see each other again."
With that, I say goodbye to Saffron, thank her for her hospitality and take off on Harmony. It's time to pay an old friend a visit.
