Bookworms
"You see, Hiccup and I have been updating the Book of Dragons a lot ever since you showed up," Fishlegs finally began his explanation. We were walking through Berk and constantly getting stopped by curious villagers asking why I was here and all sorts of other questions.
"We've got a lot of new information thanks to you but I was wondering if you could help me to fill in a few more pages."
I think about his offer for a moment. "I don't see why not," I reply. He smiles excitedly. "Great! I can't wait to find out more about dragons! Maybe even new dragon kinds that we haven't discovered yet!"
I smile slightly at his eagerness, glad I have my mask with me. "It's possible," I have to agree. Eventually we reach a large door in the side of a mountain which I'm guessing is their main meeting spot or something. I never really came to Berk much, even before I started the sanctuary, so I still don't know what this place's purpose is.
I followed Fishlegs inside and discreetly looked around. It was warm and quite homey in here, though it was packed with others. The moment someone noticed, recognised and yelled about me, I was swarmed.
Though these were different questions. They were about Flashwing, how I tamed her, how I tamed a Death Song, how I could tame whole Slitherwing pods, where my island was, how many dragons I had... they were more demanding, too, as though they needed them answered like they needed air.
"None of this is your business!" I eventually snap. "I didn't make the journey here just to answer questions I have no time for nor the will to respond to! Have any of you considered that I tell nobody of this information for a reason?!"
Everyone seemed slightly surprised by my sudden outburst. The crowd awkwardly departed, leaving me with only Heather, Astrid, Fishlegs and Hiccup. "Not even my dad can get them to clear out so fast on the first try," Hiccup remarked. "It's a change in pace for them, they don't know if they can push me to my limits at all, or what my limits are," I shrug. "If I spend too much time here they'll gain more confidence and that will be a thing of the past."
"Enough of that! Let's go update the book!" Fishlegs said excitedly, running off, presumably to find the book. "Just take a seat before he gets too impatient," Heather advised me. I nodded and sat down at a table, Flashwing curling up at my feet tiredly. I couldn't blame the poor girl; it takes almost half of the day to travel between Berk and our home.
Looks like we'll be staying the night.
Fishlegs returns quickly, a large, leather-bound book in his pudgy arms. He throws himself down next to me and opens the cover. "What kind of stuff can you tell us about?" He asks, wasting no time.
"Pretty much anything you need," I shrug in response. "Then let's start with the Terrible Terror!" He grins, flicking the page. There are many symbols and facts as well as drawings. I read through it quickly, though there isn't anything new to me in here.
"The only thing you haven't got down that I know about is that Terrible Terrors are actually more intelligent than they let on," I say. "They can easily trick humans into seeing them as cute or docile, for starters. Then they can either strike alone or in a pack."
"That's actually really smart!" Fishlegs remarked, writing it down. That was how I realised that most of the new writing was in his handwriting. "We've seen Terrible Terrors do this a lot, but we never thought to document it!"
He turns the page and I see a Monstrous Nightmare sketch. "Monstrous Nightmares, hm... They're actually quite docile even when wild," I shrug. "They just don't show this to others and put up a tougher exterior. Makes them appear more threatening to enemies."
I continue to rattle off facts about any dragon I'm shown. Fishlegs somehow seems to get more and more eager about my knowledge. By now Hiccup and the others have sat down and are listening, impressed by how much I can add to their book.
"Wait, so how do you tame a Death Song?" Fishlegs asks. "Have you ever realised how before they eat their captives they sing to them?" I ask. He nods slowly, unsure as to what I'm getting at. "All Death Song's have a unique call," I explain. "If you mimic it, it'll like you more. From there it'll allow you to tame it."
Fishlegs starts scribbling it down excitedly. "How did you learn all of this, Artemis?" Hiccup asks me. "I do a lot of research and field work," I reply honestly. "It's pretty essential if you want to care for hundreds of dragons."
He's about to say something else when the door opens. "Hey, ladies, how are you?"
I sigh slightly and turn to face Snotlout, who is making his way towards us. "What do you want?" I question boredly. "I just wanted to ask you and Heather if you'd like to stay in my hut tonight," he smirks, sidling up between us. "As tempting as that sounds, I think I'll just go home," I grunt.
"In the dark?" He questions, grinning. I look out the door he left open and realise that he's right; it's already pitch black out there. It would be ridiculous to fly back home now. We would too easily get lost.
I sigh and turn to Hiccup. "Are there any places my partner and I will be able to stay at that doesn't involve Snotlout breathing down my neck?" I ask him, earning a chuckle. "You can always stay with me if you need it."
"I'd rather not," I reply, not exactly thrilled at the prospect of a curious boy in the room I'm laying unconscious in. "Besides, The last time I was in there you kidnapped me."
While Hiccup chuckled nervously, Astrid and Heather left, Stormfly following. Fishlegs somewhat reluctantly put away the book before him and Meatlug did the same. That left me with Snotlout, Hiccup and Toothless.
"I suppose I should head out, then," I say, standing up. "Artemis, where are you going?" Hiccup asks worriedly. I have to admit he's quite sweet. "Flashwing and I are roughing it tonight," I reply, my Razorwhip following me out.-
