Chapter Four

Riverton

Levi sat down in a swivel chair and placed his hands in his pockets. He glanced around the small room which held two jail cells, and two desks with a room with glass walls at the front of the office which read Sheriff's Office.

He turned as Daniel sat down in his chair, his face stuck in a file. He smiled. "Nice place you got here."

Daniel gave him a quick glance. "Oh sorry. I wanted to you by the house, but something came up here I had to see to."

Levi shrugged. "No big deal." He laid his head back as he stared up at the ceiling. Sitting here was going to be pretty boring. Who knew how long Daniel was going to be working on... whatever it was he was working on.

He sighed and stood up. He thrust a thumb toward the door. "Hey, do you mind if I take a look around the town? Maybe it'll help jog something."

"Yeah, of course," Daniel replied, not bothering to look up at him.

Levi gave him a blank stare as he turned to leave.

"Oh!" He turned around as Daniel's swivel chair rolled across the tile. "If anyone asks you any questions, like why you're not in school, where's your parents, things like that just tell them you're with me."

Levi flashed him a smile before pushing open the glass door. Sunlight blinded him as he stepped outside causing him to squint. He glanced around the small town. There wasn't much to see. Just the usual stores. The post office, clothes stores, a pawnshop, and a couple dinners lined the roads as he walked the sidewalk.

He looked down at his converse shoes as he walked along. A breeze blew causing him to shiver. It would've been nice if he could've found a jacket in the lost in found in the hospital.

He sat down on a metal, green bench and stared at the traffic that drove by. Millions of questions raced through his mind. What was he doing up on that cliff? What was he doing outside of the town to begin with? How did he get such a large gash on his head.

He reached up and touched the bandage that was tapped to his forehead. He sighed and leaned over, placing his elbows on his knees. There were too many strange questions that he didn't have answers to.

Something caught his attention from the corner of his eye. Something across the street. He looked up to see a woman dressed in a baby blue blouse, black pants, with a white jacket on walking down the sidewalk on the opposite side. He smiled recognizing her as the volunteer from the hospital. Though, she was wearing different clothes then earlier. Maybe the air had become more fridge since earlier and she went home to change into something more suitable for the weather.

Levi squinted his eyes. This woman said she would meet him on her walks in the woods by the bridge. What bridge? What woods? Maybe that was where he should go. Maybe there he could find the answers to who he was.

He stood up and glanced around looking for someone to point him in that direction. He noticed a young woman striding toward him, her nose buried in a book, and her long, curled brown hair blowing in front of her face by the wind.

"Excuse me!" He raised an arm into the air hoping to get her attention. Unfortunately, it didn't. He stepped around the bench and up in front of her. He placed his hands forward so she didn't run into him. "Hello?"

The woman gasps, and hugged her book close to her chest. "I am so sorry! I didn't see you there."

Levi furrowed his brow, picking out her words through her thick, French accent. "No, no. My fault. I was trying to get your attention."

She sighed and smiled. "Sorry. I seem to get lost in the books I read, and forget where it is I'm even going." She extended her hand. "My names Stella."

He accepted her greeting by firmly shaking her hand. "I'm Levi." He glanced around. "I was wondering I you could tell me if there was a bridge somewhere here in town. It would be in the woods. Along a nature trail perhaps?"

Stella chuckled. "Yeah, the old troll bridge! Down by South Pike Street."

Levi was startled by her words. Had he heard correctly. "Im sorry troll bridge?

Stella waved her hand threw the air like she was pushing his words aside. "Oh, don't be bothered by the name. It's not like actual trolls live there. Some of the teens named it that since thats where they go to hang out." She narrowed her eyes. "Wouldn't you know this? The whole town knows about the troll bridge. You knew or something?"

Levi felt his cheeks redden. "Well, kinda. I sorta lost my memory. I'm trying to regain it."

Stella's grin vanished as she lowered her head. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound like—"

"It's okay," he interrupted. "No harm done." He glanced around once more trying to find a sign giving the street name Stella had mentioned, but he couldn't see it. Maybe it was further down... or further up? Either way, he'd find it soon enough. He gave her a nod. "Thanks again."

He moved around her, and began walking down the sidewalk when a hand gripped just above his elbow. He stopped and turned to his left as Stella wrapped her arm around his. "Better yet! I'll show you."

Levi gave an uneasy chuckle. "Oh, that's not necessary."

"Eh, don't bother." She gripped him tighter. "I'm not letting you go. Together, we'll get your memories back."

Levi lowered his head and grinned as he let Stella lead the way.

A few miles down the road, they came to a sign that said "Leaving Riverton". Stella gripped his hand and dragged him down a path to the right.

He gazed at the trees and flowers that bloomed in awe. It was so pretty here. The purple, blue, and yellow flowers aroma filled is nostrils, and the changing of the leaves on the trees dancing in the suns rays. "No wonder people come walk this trail. It's so beautiful."

Stella giggled like a school girl though she looked to be in her twenties. "Nature is a beautiful thing." She pointed straight ahead. "The bridge isn't far now."

As they walked a little further, an old bridge made with ropes and planks came into view. The thing looked like it was ready to collapse, and it only went over a tiny stream that you could step over.

He furrowed his brow in confusion, and flopped a finger toward the bridge. "That's the bridge where teens find it cool to hang around?

Stella sighed. "I know it isn't much, but it is what you described."

His eyes popped open slightly as two people emerged from under the bridge. They both turned and eyed him, but unlike what the volunteer had told him, these girls didn't run from him. One actually looked him over with eyes that looked like she knew him, but he didn't know her.

She slowly began to stalk toward him. The young girl looked rather beautiful for someone who liked to hang under a bridge. Her black hair blended well with her dark complexion and she wore a red shirt with black pants. Something he found strange was the bone necklace she wore. It didn't look like it fit her character.

He cautiously raised his hand and gave her a slow wave. "Uh,

hi—"

"Levi?" She quickened her pace as she sped up to him, her black pink-tails bouncing with every step. "Is that you?"

His eyed in shock. She knew him? What was he supposed to say? He glanced over at Stella before back at this girl. "Uh, yeah. Who are—"

Unexpectedly, she threw her arms around him in an embrace. "I was wondering what had happened to you. Rumors had been going around saying your were found in the woods away from town with a nasty gash on your head." She lifted her head from off his chest, and he watched as her eyes turned to the bandage on his head. "Which, by the looks of if, isn't just rumors." She gave him a concerned look. " Are you okay? What happened to you? What were you doing out there?"

Levi was beyond confused. He didn't know what to do or what to say. This girl sounded like he knew an awful lot about him, but he had no clue who she was. And what kind of accent did she have? One from Louisiana? How could there be so many different accents mixed into one small town?

He shook his head as he furrowed his brow. "I'm sorry. Am I supposed to know who you are?"

The girl gave him a bewildered looked as she backed away from him. "You mean you don't remember me?" She huffed. "We've only been friends for three months, but I thought I left a good enough impression to not be forgotten."

"Oh, it's not that," Stella spoke for him, placing a tender hand on his shoulder. "Your friend here has amnesia."

He blushed as the girl before him let her mouth fall open. "Amnesia?" She covered her mouth with a hand. "How did this happen?"

Levi gave a grin as he pointed to the bandage on his head. "What I hit, or whatever hit me, did this."

"Oh, I'm so sorry." The dark girl gripped his forearm. "Well, not even amnesia is going to make you forget about me that easily. I'm Imani." She poked him in the chest. "You better not forget it this time." She giggled, the sound of her laughter making him smile.

Imani seemed like a strange young lady, but he liked her. Maybe the past three months he had spent getting to know her made him like her even a little too well. Something was different. Being close to her didn't give him the vibe of them two being just friends.

"Well," Stella hooked her arm back with his. "Now you have two lovely ladies to help you regain your memories."

Levi laughed. "I guess you're right. Though, maybe I should find a guy next."

Imani and Stella both broke out in laughter. Imani hit him on the arm playfully. "Come on. I'll take you to see my father." He gave her a puzzled look, and she caught on quickly. "Don't worry. He's the towns therapist. He's actually helped a few people who are struggling with amnesia. He might be able to do the same for you."

He nodded as he and the girls turned around and headed back for town. He turned his head around one more time to catch a final glimpse of the troll bridge where he had hoped to find answers. He may not have found exactly what he was looking for, but finding a friend who could possibly help him regain his memory was more then he could hope for.
