The Fight

I dismount Skyvolt, my Skrill partner, just outside Valka's sanctuary and walk inside. Our meeting isn't today, but Valka claimed she wanted to show me something very special. I hope it's a new species of dragon, that would be amazing.

Valka greets me, her mask already off, and takes my hand. A huge grin is plastered across her face and her eyes are sparkling in a way I've never seen from her before, despite her being a naturally cheerful person. "Indigo, you're here! Come, come! I can't wait to introduce you!"

"Introduce me? Is it a new dragon?" I question eagerly, removing my mask with my free hand. She shakes her head, clearly ready to burst from happiness. "No, no, he's much more special than that!" She answers before turning round and hurrying off, taking me with her. Skyvolt follows, curious.

What I see causes me to freeze, as it does with the two others in the room. Valka releases me and wraps her arms around the male. "Indigo, I'd like to introduce you to my son Hiccup and his betrothed Astrid!" Valka is clearly either oblivious to the tension in the room or she's too excited to care.

"Indigo? Indigo North? You're the Dragon Master?" Hiccup is the first to speak. "This is where you've been for nearly four years now?" Astrid questions. She's actually changed a lot since the last time I saw her. She has a new style for her braided hair, a red top and a thick hood to name a few differences.

"Oh, so you know each other?" Valka asks curiously. "She's a legend back on Berk!" Hiccup explains. "Mum, when you said you wanted me to meet one of your associates I never thought you'd meant her!"

"A legend? Indigo's a legend?" Valka's surprise is clear. "I haven't actually heard the myth, I just know there is one," I shrug. "According to the legend you're a skilled fighter known as the Dragon Master," Astrid explained, clearly loving this first part.

"You can understand dragons, you can speak to dragons telepathically, you have the power to erase memories and you can turn your entire Dragon Sanctuary invisible to prevent it from being found... according to myth, of course."

I laugh. "Is this really what people think of me? If that was true I'd be a goddess. I can understand dragons to an extent but not their language, I can't speak to them telepathically, I can't turn the sanctuary invisible and I can only erase memories indirectly."

"Could you erase my memories of a few things, then?" Hiccup asked sheepishly. "Let's just say Gobber used a bone as a belt buckle and we ran into a Boneknapper."

I chuckle. "You told me that one a few days back. At least it was tame afterwards." "Did I?" Hiccup questioned, not remembering it. "I had to erase your memory of the time, you knew too much," I admit. Suddenly Valka froze, her grip on Hiccup becoming so tight he yelled out his pain.

"You hypnotised my son?"

"They got inside. They saw Nightshade and Jewel. The dragons saw Alpine. It wasn't personal, it was a simple precaution. You know how I work."

"YOU HYPNOTISED MY SON?!"

Valka stormed over to me, overjoyed demeanour vanished and replaced with rage. I never saw this side of her, or at least I was never on the receiving end of it.

"Mum, it's fine! Calm down!" Hiccup hurried over to her and grabbed her wrist. It was more effective than when he did it with Stoick... that is to say, it had an effect. Valka allowed her son to keep her there, but her anger refused to subside.

"Valka, I didn't know he was your son," I say quietly, head hung in shame. "It wasn't him alone who's memories were erased and they can always be revived. It was a painless procedure."

Valka doesn't seem to care, instead she ran over, breaking away from Hiccup's grasp. She started pushing me towards Skyvolt. "Get out of here! Just get away! The both of you! I don't want to see you back here any time soon, you got that?"

"Mum!" Hiccup seems shocked that she'd do something like this and, to be honest, so am I. She's never kicked me out before and she's never said not to come back.

I don't notice Astrid coming over to me until her hand reaches my shoulder. I flinch away automatically, but otherwise let her do what she wants. "I erased your memory, too," I whisper quietly enough so that only she can hear. "I erased all your memories, including your dragon's and Heather's. I'm sorry. It was nothing personal, I swear."

I expect her to push away from me, yell at me and then throw her axe at me. It's not like that wouldn't be unlike her. But instead she does the complete opposite to what Astrid would normally do.

She sighed sadly and pulled me into a hug.

"Forgive and forget, right?" She says. "What, no it's not violence, it's communication?" I question genuinely. She chuckles. "I'll give you a pass... if you tell me how I can hypnotise people."

"Changewings," I smile slightly. "Tame one and take advantage of their ability to hypnotise. Taming then is simple; just play peekaboo."

"How did we not think of that before?" She seems annoyed that it was so simple the whole time. "You didn't know how to tame it before, so each time you saw it you panicked and any ideas slipped your mind?" I take a guess.

"Probably right," she agrees, pulling away from me.

A sharp object against my neck makes me automatically reach for my sword. I look up the staff at Valka, who clearly hasn't calmed down yet. "I told you to leave!" She yells. "Now get out of here before I make you!"

I nod slightly, careful not to hurt myself on her staff. "Indigo, you don't have to go," Hiccup tried to convince me not to follow Valka's order. "I do, Hiccup," I tell him, silently begging him to understand. "I really do have to go. I'm not welcome here anymore. And I really am sorry for everything."

With that, I mount Skyvolt and we fly away, desperate to get back home.
