Return Of The A Team
"Ooooooooooooohh..."
The others look from Shiron to me, impressed. "That could be useful to stop a fight or something," Mercury says. "Yeah," I reply. "I suppose it could be."
We all start discussing things, mostly mindless chatter, until the others start to grow tired and fall asleep. Soon it's only me that's still awake, so I settle down as well.
The minute I'm starting to drift off, I'm gently shaken awake. I open my eyes sleepily. "There's a message," Ink, one of the Night Terrors, tells me, dropping some parchment in front of me.
I morph into human form to read it, unravelling the paper. It takes me a moment to identify a certain chief's handwriting. What does he want now?
Artemis,
On Berk, we have a group of riders called the A Team. We were hoping you could help to train them to understand and work with their dragons better. I understand that this is a pretty strange request and probably not one you'd usually accept, but we know for sure that you would be a really big help for us as well as the fact that we need to talk.
Hiccup.
I read the letter and sigh. What does he think I am? Some kind of teacher for hire? But it's very true that we need to talk so I can't exactly decline.
I get up and check outside. The sun's just rising. The perfect time to set out, but I'll need someone with me.
As if on cue, Citrine - Camo's mate and another Changewing - appears beside me. She's a beautiful dragon, the very same one who helped me during a large battle not long ago after I freed her from a hunter ship.
"Is something wrong, Indigo?" She asked. "Nothing much," I reply, turning to face her. "But I need to go to Berk. Now. Would you like to join me?"
She gave me a toothy grin. "Of course. Let's go." I grin back and mount up, pulling my mask over my face. "Let's fly."
She takes off at lightning speed, flying away from the sanctuary and towards our destination like a migrating bird relying on its moral compass.
After a while I decide to fly as well and leap off of Citrine, morphing in the air. We fly side by side for a while, enjoying the slight breeze keeping us up. It's always such a rush to fly.
It feels like moments and we've already got Berk in our sights, so I morph back to my human form and ride Citrine down. The moment we touch ground, she turns invisible.
We walk into the village, keeping an eye out for anyone we know. My plan is to go to the arena and see if anyone's there, but since we have to walk through here anyway, we might as well keep an eye out.
I'm quickly spotted by random people and sigh under my breath. I hate all this attention. I'm not used to it. I wish I could just turn invisible like Citrine.
I finally make my way through the village and most people leave me alone after that, so the walk up to the arena is much easier. "You still with me?" I whisper to Citrine, who gently nudges my side in reply. Good, I haven't lost her.
I make my way inside the arena, looking around. Everyone is setting up targets except for Hiccup, who's watching the air expectantly. "The A Team should be here soon," he says. "Good," Astrid replies. "We're ready for when they are."
"Then where exactly do I come in?" I question Hiccup boredly. All eyes snap to me. "You came?" Hiccup seems surprised. "You were right when you said we have a lot to talk about," I give him a knowing look. "Now who exactly are 'the A Team'?"
"They're a defence team for Berk," Fishlegs answers my question, carefree as ever since he's in his zone. As expected, he's completely oblivious to what happened at the sanctuary.
"Okay. So where do I come in?" This time my repeated question is strictly directed to Hiccup. "We're going to spend two nights out in the forest with our dragons," he explains. "We figured you would be able to help the A Team benefit more from the experience."
"A three day course... they'll definitely learn something," I ignore the fact that this means I'll be away from the sanctuary for three days. "I'll help where I can."
"Thanks," Hiccup smiles. I only nod in reply. "Here they come!" Fishlegs calls out. I sidestep the entrance just in time for a Deadly Nadder, Hideous Zippleback, Gronkle and two Monstrous Nightmares to fly past. Once they're inside I step back into the entrance.
The new dragons land, allowing their riders to dismount. The humans are ranging in age from little kids to old women. Strange group.
"Alright, have you guys been practicing your manoeuvres?" Astrid asks them all. There are nods and a chorus of positive answers. "Good," Astrid states. "Now as you know, we'll be having our trip. Just because we're not at the academy doesn't mean we'll be relaxing. You all have to be prepared for anything."
Astrid glances my way before continuing. "We have some help for this exercise and she knows a thing or two about both dragons and training. The Dragon Master will be joining us."
Gasps of shock are heard as everyone looks to me. I just stare back at them. Gothi starts walking over, looking me up and down. I watch her, confused.
When she reaches me she stops, eyes narrowed in confusion and concentration. "Can I help you?" I ask her. She simply starts scribbling in the ground with her staff.
There are words I can't make out too clearly, but she quickly adds a small drawing beneath them. It's a compass with a circle around the 'N' for north, then a question mark.
North?
"Sorry, I don't understand," I lie. She scowls, seemingly knowing I can understand what she's getting at, but then returns to the Gronkle who's waiting for her.
Looks like I'll have to be careful around Gothi.
