Persistent As Always

While Astrid took care of Jewel I decided not to leave Hiccup out and sent Stylive off to fetch someone for me. "Well I'm not sure what you guys would like to do here, it's mostly just stuff for the dragons here to be honest."

"You're not going to kick us out?" Hiccup questioned. "Last time I tried that I got kicked out for it," I remind him, sighing slightly. "Besides, if you're the son of Valka I know I can trust you with this place. I've always known I could, I just needed to be sure. But knowing will make you a target for dragon and bounty hunters so it's much safer if you want to forget."

"How do you erase memories anyway?" He tries asking again. This time I decide to finally give him an actual answer. "There's a Changewing here, his name is Camo. We use his ability to hypnotise anyone who knows too much into forgetting what they've learned."

"That's incredible," Astrid says, clearly interested in the idea. I notice that Jewel is still perched on her shoulder and chuckle. "She definitely likes you. I've never seen her so friendly around a human other than me."

Astrid's about to reply when she and Hiccup gasp. I turn to see what's going on, but I'm trampled by a large blur, followed by slaps of pink. "Aah! Nightshade! Get off of me! Quit it!"

I eventually manage to push the larger Night Fury off of me and give him my best attempt at a glare, but obviously he just laughs at me. "As you can tell, he's very obedient and sensible," I remark to Hiccup and Astrid.

Nightshade seems to notice our guests for the first time and growls at them, but I place a hand to his snout and he calms instantly, despite looking confused. I use our silent method of communication - which is basically just a form of sign language I've taught my partners - to explain to him that they get to know.

Nodding, he then walks over to our guests and sniffs at them curiously. "Hey there, big guy," Hiccup smiled. Nightshade eyed him up and down before looking to me and cocking his head, tongue slipping out of his mouth slightly. I confirm with a nod before he moves on to Astrid.

He analyses her as well before asking me a different question, this one making me laugh. "What?" Astrid was understandably confused. "He just said that he likes the idea of you two being mates," I grin. Hiccup blushed slightly while Astrid just looked shocked.

Then it turns into a mischievous smirk that leaves me unsettled.

"So, Indigo, what about you? Do you have any 'mates'?" She teases. "I don't have the time for mates and even if I did I couldn't have one because I need to stay here and defend the sanctuary and the pack," I shrug.

"But you need to be with you'd own kind as well," Hiccup states. "I'm with you right now and that's more than enough for me," I tell him, not interested in the subject since I know it's pointless. I have to be here for my family and there's nobody that could take my place even if I wanted there to be, which I don't.

"We could always take over for you," Hiccup offers, clearly not following the script in my head where he just gives in and leaves. Though I suppose there's a reason why this is so. He never gives up. Ever.

Lucky me.

"As tempting as that offer sounds," I say sarcastically. "I can't leave you with the place. You don't know the precautions, the manoeuvres, you know nothing about this place or how it functions. It took even me years to completely master this place and I'm the one who started it all up."

"Then just tell us what to do," Astrid shrugs, petting Jewel under her chin, causing her to yip and wag her tail happily, not unlike an overly excitable puppy dog... well, an overly excitable puppy dog with scales and wings and the ability to shoot plasma from their mouth.

"Look, it's never going to happen so there's no point in pretending it will," I sigh. "Oh it'll happen," Hiccup smirks, crossing his arms. "You need the time off, Indigo, don't you? Besides, what if while you're gone you come across a new dragon kind or something? Wouldn't that be incredible?"

"Don't tempt me," I grunt. "Even if I wanted to leave, I don't have a choice. It's too dangerous. I can't risk the lives of all my partners just because I feel like being selfish."

"How is it being selfish?" Astrid questions. "If I leave just for fun and they get hurt and die because I wasn't there to protect them, that would be the most selfish thing I could do," I state. "Their lives are much more important than my happiness. Besides, being with these guys is what makes me happy."

"Then go out and find another partner," Hiccup suggests. "And put their life at risk, too?" I scoff. He walks over to me and puts a hand on my shoulder. "Indigo, you can't always put everyone else first. They'll be safe here and they can take care of themselves even if we weren't here to keep track of them all. Just trust us."

I sigh. Admittedly the idea of getting some time to myself to just relax and act my age again is intriguing. And I know that Hiccup and Astrid will take care of things as best they can. Maybe I should just take their advice and...

"Ugh. I don't have time for this. Quit trying to talk me into this. It's never going to work anyway. I'm not going to listen to you." "Won't you?" Hiccup cocks an eyebrow. "He can be very persuasive," Astrid reminds me. "Oh believe me, I know," I nod to her. "Always so persistent. Doesn't understand the meaning of 'no'."
