Pack Life

The moment Asher gets back up he morphs into human form again, grinning. "That feels amazing!" Stylive tells me privately that 'that's what he said', which I remind her is my brother she's talking about. She just shrugs, still thinking her little joke was perfect.

"Glad you like it," I say to Asher honestly. He seems like the kind of goofy, easy-going character that I used to be a little more like when I was younger. I guess we were alike.

"Hey, Indi, can I ask you something?" He questions. "You just did," I reply. "Well can I ask two things?" He tries again. I look up to him, amusement flashing in his eyes at my antics that allows me to keep it up. "That's your second one."

"Can I ask you four things then? Please?"

"Three and four."

"Ugh. You're so annoying, you know that? Six questions?"

"That makes six."

"How are you so good at this?"

"I didn't give you permission to ask a question."

He just laughs at me, clearly a happy-go-lucky person who doesn't get annoyed easily. I can't help but like it. "Well I guess I have to ask without permission," he shrugs.

"Why are you wearing a mask?"

I tense slightly, knowing the question was coming but still not prepared for it all the same. Taking in my discomfort he quickly adds that I don't have to tell him.

"No, no, I'll say," I shake my head. "There are people out there who know about me. Not personally, just that there's someone out there and I just happen to be that someone. They want me captured or killed, depends on their plans, because of my connections to an elusive dragon pack and myths that I possess some kind of powers. The mask hides my identity so people can't dig around in my past and learn my weaknesses."

Asher let out a low growl that pierced through his throat and into the air. I didn't expect this from him and jump slightly, causing him to stop instantly. "Sorry, I didn't think-"

"It's fine," I cut him off. "Just wasn't expecting it, that's all. I'm used to all the growls and roars so do what you like."

He nods, smiling slightly, looking relieved that I didn't run or something dumb like that. "So, Indigo, what's your Pack like?"

"What do you want to know about them?" I ask. "How many dragons are there?" Is his first question. I have to think for a moment. "There's a lot of us... Hm... I know there's more than one hundred and fifty, possibly two hundred."

"That many?" Asher seems surprised. "Well it counts Night Terrors, Cave Dwellers and Smothering Smokebreaths, so it sounds more than it looks," I shrug. "How many were there when you met them all?"

"Hm... do eggs count?" I ask. He nods. "Then there was the Night Terrors, the Cave Dwellers, the Alpha, a Skrill, three Sentinels and twelve eggs, almost all of which have now hatched."

"That's all? But I thought you said there were close to two hundred," he says in confusion. "There was around one hundred individual dragons already, including the eggs," I reply. "From there Stylive here joined their little pack, then I brought some more partners in as the years progressed."

"You've brought in almost one hundred dragons? What kinds?"

"Every kind."

"Every dragon kind?!"

"If I can, yes."

"Bet you don't have one of us, though."

"Do I count?"

"... good point. But I bet you don't know any Bewilderbeasts."

"I know two. Both are Alphas. One is the Alpha of my pack. The other runs a friend's pack."

"Woah... Death Song?"

"Yes, she's a lovely singer."

"Hm... Night Fury?"

He smirks as though he's bested me. "I know three of them, two of which are part of my pack," I reply, causing his jaw to drop. "Three Night Furies?!"

"There are also four Night Fury eggs, none of which are related to another," I shrug. "We'll be having more of the little guys running around soon enough."

"Seven Night Furies?!"

I chuckle at his reaction. "Yes. Hopefully more some day. That would be nice." "Yeah..." he nods, still shocked that I know seven of the supposedly extinct dragon kind.

"What dragon have you never seen?" He asks, intrigued. "Hm... a Red Death. I've never seen one of those before," I say after thinking for a moment. "Pretty sure the future chief of Berk killed off the last one five years back."

"Berk?" Asher starts to growl again. "A future chief? You mean that scrawny little kid, son of Stoick the Vast?"

"Yes, Hiccup," I nod, unsure where this is going. "He's tried to kill dragons as well, I'll bet," Asher growls louder. "Actually, he's partners with the only living Night Fury I know that isn't my partner," I reply, realising what's gotten Asher so upset.

"What? He tamed a Night Fury?"

"Saved his life several times over," I answer. "He's only killed one dragon in his entire life and that's the Red Death, which was trying to kill off his whole tribe."

"I see," Asher nods, calming down. "Well it's getting late, I should get Melanite to sleep."

I nod back in understanding and step aside, petting Melanite one last time. Asher then morphs into his dragon form and curls his wings around Melanite, just like how my partners do when we sleep away from home.

I look to Stylive and she grins to me. Did you know or something? I ask silently. The scent of a dragon is all over you, but I always thought it was because you've only ever been around dragons, she replies. Plus I never knew about Morphwings or their habits anyway. The only one of us old enough to possibly know is the Alpha.

I nod and turn back to Asher, who gently places a now sleeping Melanite in the smallest nest. He then turns to me and stretches his wings, cocking his head to me in a curious manner. "I'm good, thanks," I say. He nods, slightly surprised that I understood, and morphs into human form again.
