Escape
The next thing I know, Hiccup and Astrid are walking over to me. "Go ahead, Astrid," Hiccup encourages the blonde, who nods and crouches down a little to match my height. "Hiccup seems to think that I can train you, Nightling. Let's see just how accurate he is."
She holds out her palm. I stare at it, holding back a laugh. She's actually trying to tame me! I cock my head at Astrid, mocking confusion, then lie down.
Snotlout laughs, but a quick and deadly glare from Astrid shuts him up. "Clearly she's not looking for a friend," Hiccup remarks. "It's like Artemis said," Fishlegs pipes up, instantly making me sit up again, curious.
"She said that some dragons are wild for a reason. Maybe there's a reason why Nightling won't respond like other dragons to our methods of training."
"It's always possible," Hiccup nodded in agreement, looking at me curiously. "Then let's try a different approach," Astrid shrugs. "She seems friendly enough. We could always consider her trained already."
"I'd rather just leave," I remark. "That's what I said," Hookfang tells me. "But then that idiot who rides me came along and here I am."
"Hm... think you can help distract them all long enough for me to slip away?" I ask him. "I have places to be. My Alpha was expecting me back hours ago, but I was stuck in that net."
"I'd try to help you, but it won't work, I'm afraid," he states. "They'd just come after you and you've already said you don't like others knowing where you go."
"They're so frustrating," I sigh. "I need to get back to the Alpha. It's very important. I can't go back with these morons, though."
Astrid comes back over, now holding some dragon nip in her hands. I take in the intoxicating scent, but otherwise don't let it become obvious that I'm interested in it. "Let's see if you like dragon nip," Astrid mutters, placing the stuff in front of me.
I cock my head at it, then lay down again, looking upwards longingly. What I wouldn't give to just fly off... just forget this all for a few minutes.
Then I realise; why not?
Without warning, I take off and start flying towards the forest. If I can just get away long enough to morph, I can get away with this. I just need a few moments.
"She's getting away!"
"No! Nightling!"
"Cooler Ruffnut, come back!"
I growl furiously at them all, ignoring them while I fly higher, zipping towards the cover of the clouds. The sun is rising, destroying my cover of the darkness. I hope I can escape this time.
It doesn't take long for fire to light up the skies where I'm being followed. I growl again. They're firing at me?! They can't do that! I'm not a threat to them, they know that, so firing at me is very uncalled for!
The clouds finally envelop me and I spread my wings, gliding through the cover. The firing ceases, but the sound of beating wings doesn't. Nor the sound of Hiccup shouting to everyone to find me.
I dive below the clouds again and see Volcana hovering over the forest, looking around. When she sees me, she grins. "Over here!"
I nod and fly over her, then morph mid-air, the others too lost in the clouds to notice me. I land on her back in human form just as Hiccup and Toothless escape the clouds and notice us. They fly over.
"Indigo, you're still here?" Hiccup asks. "Had to come back," I lie fluently. "Got too dark for Volcana here to see where she was going properly so we decided to wait it out here."
"Have you seen a dragon that looks a little like a Razorwhip anywhere?" He asked, looking around. "It went that way," I reply, stabbing my thumb over my shoulder. "It was definitely frightened. What did you do to it?"
"We, er..." he nervously rubbed the back of his head. "Ruff and Tuff may have thrown a net over her...?"
"You did what?!" I snap. "She's a dragon, not a caged bird! Did you even think of the impact this could have on her as an unknown breed? What if she was like Night Terrors where if one is taken out the rest fall with them? I told you that there's a reason why some dragons are wild, Hiccup! You have no idea what damage you could've caused!"
He sighed. "I know, I know. I'll have to do my research on her. Though it turns out that there was two of them and they seem to act differently, so I don't know much about their natural behaviour. We're calling them Stealthwings."
I nod slightly. "Not a bad name. I'll look into things on my end, maybe I can figure out more about Stealthwings." "Thanks," he smiles slightly. "Keep us posted and we'll do the same."
"Sounds good to me," I agree. "Right, we should get going." "You sure you don't want to wait out the storm?" Hiccup asks. "There's a big one that's going to be coming in pretty soon, apparently."
I sigh. Of course. Of course there's a stupid storm. "I guess I'm sticking around, then. It better be in and out fast, though. Alpine is expecting me back soon and then I've got to get the water tank refilled among other things."
"It's like you see him as your own Alpha," Hiccup chuckles. "I guess I do," I reply. "He's the Alpha of the sanctuary. Therefore I see him as my Alpha as well. And I really should get back home soon because..."
I look Toothless in the eye very briefly before continuing. "... my Alpha is expecting me back soon but I got stuck here."
"Wait..." Toothless murmurs. "What the...?" "Let's get going, Volcana," I tell the Titan-Wing Gronkle. "Enjoy thinking about that one, Night Fury," Volcana roars to Toothless before turning around and dropping us toward the forest again, moving us back into the cave we stayed in before my little adventure as 'Nightling the Stealthwing'.
Just as we reach the cave, the first splash of rain beats down upon us from the skies.
