Citrine's Tricks
After the A Team practice their accuracy for a while on the targets, it's clear to see where their mistakes are being made. They're overly confident in their partners and their abilities, so they're pushing the dragons beyond their limits and scolding them for their failures.
At one point Gothi almost goes as far as to whack the Gronkle she's riding with her staff, but a deadly glare from me, the girl who is also prepared to draw her sword, is enough to make her glare back but ultimately leave the poor Gronkle alone. "Thank you," they roar to me. I can only nod in reply.
Once target practice is over we head out to the forest... well, that's the plan. Snotlout decides that it's absolutely necessary to convince me to ride with him.
"Come on, babe, I'll show you how a man flies his dragon," he attempts to seduce me. "I'm not your babe," I snap. "And I can fly with my own partner. Hookfang is a lovely dragon, but I can't say the same for you."
"It's true," Astrid piped up as she walked passed, not missing a beat. "Now quit pestering the Dragon Master and let's get going."
"Couldn't have said it better myself," I smirk beneath my mask at her. As if knowing what I'm doing, she smirks back.
"Can everyone just ride their own dragons?" Hiccup sighs, mostly to Snotlout. "Artemis doesn't even have a dragon!" Snotlout argues. "Snotlout, if I didn't come with a dragon, how else would I get here so fast?" I point out. "Do you think I transformed into a dragon and flew here myself or something?"
"To be fair, the myths say you can turn an entire island invisible," a middle-aged man with a Deadly Nadder shrugs. "I think it's as likely a guess as that."
"See? Dad gets it!" Snotlout cheers. So that must be... Spitelout, right? I think I've heard him mention his father before. Why does the family have such weird names? I'm a freaking dragon and at least I'm only called Indigo!
"Well he has a point," Hiccup turns to me. "Where's your dragon?" "She'll meet us there," I reply, not technically lying. "I can follow myself. You've seen this trick before but I had to get rid of a few memories, so it's nothing new."
"Wait, what?!"
Everyone except Hiccup and Astrid are shocked, the other two simply curious as to what they're about to witness. I click my tongue quietly and feel Citrine wrap her tail around my waist and lift me into the air.
Now everyone is gawking like fish out of water. "What just... how are you doing that?" Hiccup asks, shocked since he can't see Citrine yet as she's still camouflaged.
"The change of the wing leaves nothing to be seen," I state cryptically, subtly hinting that there's a camouflaged Changewing involved. He doesn't seem to get it, though if he has he stays quiet about it.
"Now let's get going. I'd rather not wait around until nightfall to trek through the woods." Citrine takes off, making it look like I'm flying completely solo and not on a dragon at all. The riders all join me, Astrid taking the lead.
We fly for a while with me constantly getting curious looks from the others. Fair enough. It's not every day that they see something like this, I'm guessing.
We land at the edge of the forest, just far enough in that it's hard to see the village. I look to Astrid for guidance as she's apparently the leader of this ragtag bunch. She stands up on Stormfly's back before addressing everyone.
"Okay, the target practice earlier tells us that you guys are out of sync with your dragons," she begins. Clearly she came to the same analysis as I did. "This course is going to change that and help keep you guys working smoothly together. We're going to start by getting to know our dragons again, something we're doing on Hiccup's request."
I almost laugh at this. Of course Hiccup would have to make Astrid remember to just let them relax and bond rather than train rigorously the entire time. It's just as important as the training, if not more so.
"Artemis, how did you fly like that?" A voice distracts me from Astrid's talk. I glance over to see Fishlegs has sidled over while still trying to look like he's paying attention. "You'll see," I reply, keeping my head facing forward and my voice quiet. Out of the corner of my eye I see him nod slightly.
"... now when the Dragon Master's partner gets here, she'll be able to demonstrate," Astrid finishes up. Oh boy. "Stall," I whisper to Citrine, who I know is hurrying off to do so as I feel a slight rush of wind from where she beats her wings beside me.
While everyone looks to me expectantly, Astrid is suddenly lifted into the air by an invisible force. She yells out in surprise, earning hear all the attention. I move quietly over to Hiccup, who I know was listening to Astrid's speech.
"Don't worry, she won't be hurt," I tell him. "Just needed a distraction so I could ask you what she said I was going to do because a certain blonde boy decided to ask me questions."
"Um..." he hesitates for a moment before answering. "She wanted you to show off one of your manoeuvres. She wants to demonstrate how it can be useful to be able to follow techniques fluidly with your dragon."
"Thanks," I say before nodding in Citrine's direction. Astrid is promptly but gently set down again. She looks at me. "What did you just do?!"
"Sorry," I reply. "She's just playful, that's all. She meant no harm." "She?" She questions. "I suppose my partner can show herself now," I say. I feel Citrine move behind me.
"Citrine, let's go," I say to her. She materialises obediently, narrowed eyes slithering across everyone as she works out what to make of them all. When her eyes reach Gothi's they have a small staring match before she moves on to Snotlout, who she growls at. "That boy is not nice to you," she says. "He did not respect your wishes earlier and he also... What's the human word for it? Flirted? With you earlier even though you're not mates. I don't like him."
I pet her neck gently to calm her down. "I don't either," I reply, though quietly so nobody knows what I'm saying. "Well," I raise my voice back to normal volume again. "This is my Changewing friend Citrine."
