Another Encounter

I take a step backwards, my eyes widening as multiple emotions enter my head; happiness, shock, curiosity, sadness and, most of all, fear. I'm so glad she's alive. It has to be the real her, who else would know those things exactly or know my name or know to wait here for me? Aside from my father, of course.

But I just endangered her greatly. If word got out that she was related to the 'Dragon Master' from all the dumb legends, she'd become a target, held hostage against me.

"She said you had left her alone to die," I say after a few moments of silence. "I never tried to," Selene stated, looking down guiltily. "There was an attack one night. Her father, brother and I rushed outside and tried to keep the place safe. We were forced to sail away and lead our enemies to another island, where we hid from them for years. They finally gave up trying to capture us a few years ago and I came searching for Indigo, but I lost track of where the island was. By the time I found this place, she was gone, so I waited here and hoped she'd come back."

I listen to her story, wanting not to buy it. I want to be able to find some fault in it, some flaw in her master plan. I want her to not be my mother so I have the excuse to get rid of her for good. But so far, I see none.

"She never said she had a brother," I say instead. "Her brother was older than her, old enough to be independent, he wasn't around all the time," Selene explained, looking down. "The pair were quite close, though, when he did come."

I start to consider telling Selene that I'm Indigo. I look down to Stylive and cock my head, using my special method of communication I've worked out with all of my partners. I'm basically asking her what to do with this situation, to which she responds with a nod. She thinks I should admit it.

"Tell me," Selene speaks up. I look back to her. "How did you know Indigo?"

Well this helps. Note the sarcasm.

Eventually I simply decide to tell her the truth, but I make sure I'm on Stylive's back first. "I'm Indigo." I state. "Now don't tell that to anyone or the hunters will be after your head for the information inside. And just for the record, I still don't remember a brother."

Stylive and I fly off while her eyes widen in realisation. I don't want to be bothered anymore. I just want to go home. I just want to curl up in bed with Gordon next to me while I enjoy the peace and quiet. I just want a break.

Stylive rawks up to me quietly, checking that I'm alright. "I'm fine, girl," I say to her, patting her head to 'prove' my lie is true. Obviously she doesn't fall for this, but she doesn't continue to bother me, which I'm grateful for.

We fly in silence for a few hours, nothing but clouds and ocean below us, the only thing breaking the peace being the steady wing beats of Stylive and the rush of air that passes us as we glide. I allow myself to relax again. While we're up here, amidst the clouds and high above any harm, I can let my guard down, should I be alone.

"Where do you think we should go now, Stylive?" I ask my beautiful Deadly Nadder friend. Her light blue-green scales reflect the light and shimmer like the waves of the ocean below us.

She rawks to me and backflips, making me laugh. "Okay, okay. You don't have to tell me twice." I wait for her to level out before I stand up on her back and walk along to the tip of her tail before leaping off as though it was a diving board.

As I fall I turn to Stylive and yell the one word she'll never tire of hearing.

"Fetch!"

She immediately dips down to me and starts flying at a speed I'm convinced she can't reach unless she's playing this game. She's always been obsessed with fetch. I chuckle at her, the wind carrying it away.

I backflip in the air before hanging upside-down and closing my eyes, enjoying the rush I'm feeling from free falling without a dragon to hold me up. It's as though I'm flying all by myself. It's liberating.

I open my eyes after a few seconds of enjoying my bliss, seeing that Stylive is already ready to overtake me and catch me on her back. I move myself upwards and into a position where I'll be seated when I land.

But something beats her to it.

I'm sat on something before Stylive has the chance to overtake me. Clinging carefully to whatever caught me in case I slip off, I look down. A dragon is what caught me, as I suspected.

They have the body of a Razorwhip as far as shape is concerned, though instead of cold metal their body is made from regular dragon scales that hold the colour of deep blue sapphires, along with a few faint tints of gold here and there.

The dragon moved their head up to look at me with worry and anger flooding their emarald green eyes, like an overprotective mother telling off her child for getting themself into a dangerous situation. Though in this case I knew that part of this was true.

I also knew that this was a dragon who belonged to a kind I had never seen before.

Stylive swooped over, ready to grab me in her talons, but the dragon growled warningly to her. "It's okay for now, Stylive," I tell my partner, realising the dragon wants me to stay with them. They lick my cheek once in a thankful manner, to which I pat their neck gently. They seem incredibly friendly for a wild dragon... almost too friendly to be a wild dragon...
