Last Straw
The fourth day started with tensions high. Guilds eyed Dragon's Teeth with wary eyes. The council hadn't been able to prove that the attack on Lucy and Levy was their doing, but there were no doubts in the minds of the other competitors. Dragon's Teeth was dangerous and so everyone had only one thought when it came to them; how do I destroy them.
Surprisingly the first game went by with no events, no one was seriously hurt. But the true danger was with five of the seven fairy tail dragon slayers who seethed with anger at the mere sight of their enemy. Wendy and Rogue had their hands full using small manipulative tactics to soothe the savage beasts.
Then, in typical villain fashion, dragon's teeth struck.
"And in our final fight of the night, we have, from Mermaid Heel, Kagura Mikazuki! And from Dragons teeth, Synal Terillia!" the silver-haired woman stepped forward as did Kagura. Kagura eyed the woman with distaste.
"I must warn you," Kagura said darkly, "if you prove to be as dishonorable as your comrades, I will not hesitate to slay you."
Synal met Kagura's gaze with an equally dark one, "strong words, for a human."
"BEGIN!" the announcer cried
Kagura began running forward hand on sword. Synal tapped her foot and a great void of darkness appeared under her, it spread quickly causing Kagura to freeze. She fell into the darkness and Synal jumped in after her.
"KAGURA!" Beth cried.
"This isn't good, we can't see them!" Ariana cried.
"Give her a good thrashing Kagura, show her whose boss!" Millianna cried trying to suppress her fears.
In the darkness, Kagura floated awkwardly through the murky darkness.
"Impressive isn't it?" Synal asked. Kagura turned quickly and saw Synal floating alongside her. She braced herself for an attack but was still knocked aside by a powerful kick.
"What is this!?" Kagura swore to herself as she tried to stop herself from moving.
"I am the dragon of darkness," Synal said softly propelling herself through the murkiness, Kagura saw the flash of her silver hair and was then punched in the face. "As long as you are in my territory, you are destined to lose."
"Her territory," Kagura repeated to herself. She looked up and could see the murky blue of the sky.
'If I can just escape this, I may have a chance,' she thought, beginning to swim awkwardly through the darkness.
"Not so fast!" Synal hissed coming forward again, this time Kagura was ready, it was easy to see her opponent with her silver hair. Synal hissed as Kagura's sword slashed her cheek.
"You didn't unsheathe your sword, and yet, you hit me," Synal pondered as she backed away, "on top of that you've found my fatal flaw... It is hard to conceal myself in this world. You aren't disappointing; no wonder the shadow dragon is attracted to you."
Those words temporarily made Kagura's mind freeze. Rogue? Attracted to her? Not likely.
"You are insane," Kagura said darkly holding her sword steady as she continued to kick upward.
"Perhaps," Synal laughed lunging again.
In the stands, things were just as chaotic.
"Surely this is illegal; she could be killing her for all we know!" Rogue snarled.
"Not Kagura, she's one of the toughest girls I know, there's no way she's losing," Cana muttered opening a bottle of beer.
"Look!" Sting said pointing to the darkness that engulfed the battlefield. Near the edge of it, a blurry outline of Kagura could be seen.
"She's almost out of it!" Wendy smiled.
"Told you," Cana shrugged.
Kagura's head broke through the darkness and she breathed in the thinner air. Her senses cleared just as she heard a familiar voice.
"Kagura! Behind you!" Rogue cried gripping the railing. Kagura turned in time to see a silver streak. Then something grabbed her ankle and she was pulled back down.
"Oh no!" Beth cried.
"Kagura," Rogue gritted.
The next ten minutes were agonizing, the announcers had nothing to report on so they simply sat there watching the battlefield for any sign of the two. Then Kagura was seen and a cheer went up as she emerged from the darkness, Rogue did not cheer. As Kagura emerged it became clear that she was unconscious, Synal held her by the neck and held her high like one would a trophy. The cheering died away. The darkness disappeared and Synal dropped Kagura carelessly on the floor.
"She beat Kagura," Millianna trembled.
"KAGURA!" Beth cried.
There was no cheering for Synal as the silver-haired mage walked off the battlefield. Kagura was sent off to the hospital and the stands were silent... there was only one day left in the grand magic games and the way it was going... some feared that they would be witness to a slaughter.
Acnologia had pulled Freed aside setting up precautions and instructing him on what to do to ensure that the dragon slayers weren't able to take any part in the Games. The guild was trying to keep their eyes on the dragon slayers. However... Wendy was able to slip out of the bar unnoticed from her bedroom window. She walked purposefully to the center of town and stopped at the town square.
"I'm here!" she announced into the night.
"I knew you would be," a cold voice laughed shrilly. A woman jumped down from a rooftop and studied Wendy. Her black hair was held back in a ponytail with a single Raven Feather protruding from it, the last Dragon's Teeth member.
"What do you want," Wendy challenged taking a defensive step back.
"I want you to be in the games tomorrow," the woman smiled.
Wendy scowled, "Uncle has forbidden any of us from being in the games... even if he didn't, I couldn't, I'm not that strong. You wasted your time asking me to meet you."
"Don't sell yourself short... I know you seven can figure it out," the woman smiled beginning to circle Wendy. Wendy kept her gaze on her not allowing her to get to a blind spot.
"Even if my brothers could convince Uncle to join the games, what reason would I have to join them?"
"Surely there is someone you care about that I could hurt?" the woman teased softly as if pondering the idea.
Wendy visibly tensed, "Is that a threat?"
"It's a promise," the woman corrected, "The seven dragon slayers must be in the games tomorrow, all seven of us will be there as well. If you do not, we will destroy all that which you love."
"You won't have the rules of the games to protect you if we don't participate, if you come for us you will be met with much resistance because you will start a fight with no rules... and those fights we usually win."
"Yes... but you also aren't protected by the rules. We can kill or injure whoever we like without drawing attention. We can kill every member without fail... Asuka, for example," the woman sighed sitting down on a bench.
"She's a child," Wendy snarled sounding more reptilian.
"She's leverage. Asuka, Erza, Juvia... the cat Charle, even Romeo; all are leverage that I won't hesitate to use."
"You will be stopped," Wendy bit, her voice was sounding strained.
"Don't make the same mistake your brothers made. They refused to play and so they were punished. If you play, no one will have to get hurt," the woman met Wendy's cold eyes and smiled, her purple ones sparking with happiness. "We aren't asking that much. We all just want a fair fight, one on one, dragon vs dragon... is that so bad?"
"We'd disobey our uncle, betray our guild... multiple guilds if we wanted to get all seven of us in the games."
"Are these excuses I'm hearing?"
Wendy growled and stood a little taller, "If I agree to play, tell your friends to prepare themselves... if we come... we're going to slay them."
With that, the Sky Maiden walked away leaving the woman to laugh.
"Oh... I look forward to it!" she called after Wendy.
The war had begun.
