3 - The Recruits
The first night at the camp was a harsh one for Marilyn. She had trouble getting comfortable on the hard bed. Her mind never fully shut off during the night; this only let her get a few good hours of sleep. The small window in her room let in a meager amount of sunlight, but just enough to wake Marilyn up for the day.
Marilyn woke up from her rough sleep with a stretch. The curlers that were stuck in her hair were now slightly askew from the pillow. Yawning quietly, Marilyn stood up from the bed and sat down on the small desk. Marilyn fished through her bag that was laying on the ground next to her and pulled out a small, hand-held mirror.
Marilyn greatly disliked mirrors, especially larger ones, for one reason only. One time, while flipped, the other looked at itself in a mirror and Marilyn hated what she saw looking back at her. It was her own face, but different in subtle changes. Her eyes were what gave it away. Marilyn's eyes told the story of her life. When flipped, her eyes told tragedies of death and destruction, but when normal, her eyes showed the record of life. Due to this, Marilyn vowed to never look at herself fully in a mirror again; she would only look at parts at a time, never giving the other a chance to harm her.
Taking a deep breath, Marilyn opened the compact mirror with one hand, and with her other, she began to gently unravel the curlers from her hair. Her lush hair fell from the curlers and tumbled down the back of her neck like a waterfall. Her dark hair now holding crisp curls. Marilyn fixed a few curls by making sure they weren't tangled together. She reached over into her bag and pulled out hairpins. Placing them gently and logically in her hair, she pinned her hair up into a curled up-do.
She finished off her look by completing her makeup, a red lipstick that was accompanied by rouge on her cheeks. Her minimal eye makeup accentuated her deep eyes. Marilyn pressed her lips together causing her red lipstick to spread exactly how she wanted it.
Marilyn walked over to her luggage and pulled out the recruiter uniform that Peggy had given her the day before. It was an army green dress skirt and top with a button down jacket. Marilyn quickly slipped on the uniform, along with stockings and small-heeled, black pumps.
Marilyn's perfectly manicured hands gripped a file labeled, Super-Soldier. On the folder of the file was a black fountain pen attached to the pages. Marilyn flipped through the pages of the file one last time, seeing the candidates for the serum. The one in bold lettering was the same man she met last evening, Steve Rogers. The frail and weak bodied man with a mind of the strongest soldier.
Marilyn sighed out and closed the file. She tucked it in her arm before she set off to the entrance of the building where Peggy Carter was waiting.
Marilyn smiled sweetly at Peggy, her perfectly painted lips parting softly. Peggy returned the smile.
"Are you ready for the day?" Peggy asked
Marilyn paused for a moment, her smile stifled. "Oh... I don't know. I just wish that the... the... other doesn't show up." Marilyn hesitated on the word other.
Peggy gave her a reassuring look. "Trust me, you'll do fine. Plus I'm here, so nothing bad will happen," Peggy said in her elegant English accent.
Marilyn, unknowingly, began to pick at the skin on her hands once Peggy exited the building and climbed onto the car. She hesitantly followed behind Peggy and carefully climbed onto the car. Once on, the army green car sped off to the main campsite. Marilyn kept picking at the skin on her hands while watching as the car drove past other soldiers training on the base.
Marilyn had never been a confident person, but the other was. In fact, the other arrogant and egoistic. Marilyn was jealous of the other's confidence, but she never wished for anything else that the other had. Being one of two women on the campsite, Marilyn had a tough time with her confidence and standing up for herself. That's where Peggy came in.
Marilyn knew, sooner or later, that the men, who were deprived of any woman figure, would come after her. She hoped that when it did happen, she would be able to stand up for herself or have someone else help her.
Marilyn took one final deep breath as the car began to slow down and eventually stopped by a group of soldiers lined up. She looked out the window and saw the line of tall and muscular soldiers, but her eyes wavered on the thin, and short body of Steve Rogers. Other soldiers around them were training with other officers.
Peggy stepped out of the car first and Marilyn followed behind, her hand still wrapped around the file. The knuckles of her hands were now scabbed over and red from her constant picking, but she didn't let this bother her.
The line of soldiers quickly turned to view the sound of the car stopping, only to gawk at the sight of two beautiful women walking towards them. Peggy took lead, walking in front of Marilyn confidently. A man struggled with a large box of clipboards. Marilyn was trailing behind Peggy meekly, her eyes never fully looking at the intimidating soldiers. She could hear the faint laughs of the men as Peggy and Marilyn came into view of them.
"Recruits, attention!" Peggy shouted out to the line. The men immediately stood strong, waiting for instructions. "Gentlemen, I'm Agent Carter and this," Peggy gestured to Marilyn, "is Recruiter Johnson. I supervise all operations for this division and she will be monitoring your performance in the field."
Peggy and Marilyn began to walk down the line of soldiers when a small snicker broke out. A man called out at Peggy but more specifically Marilyn.
"I know a better place where she can monitor my performance."
Marilyn held her breath at his comment. She could feel the familiar feeling of bugs crawling under her skin as the other made itself known. Her eyes narrowed in anger, but she quickly shook it off and took a deep breath. Marilyn didn't need an outburst of the other coming into the camp.
Peggy watched Marilyn cautiously for a sign that she was about to flip, but relaxed when Marilyn nodded softly at her. A sign saying that they were in the clear. No one else noted the slight interaction between Peggy and Marilyn. No one, besides the small frame of Steve Rogers who narrowed his eyes at it.
"Also, what's with the accent, Queen Victoria? Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army," the man spoke out again in defiance.
Peggy stopped right in front of the man and called out, "What's your name, soldier?" Her face was expressionless.
"Gilmore Hodge, your Majesty," Hodge said with a look of arrogance and smirked at Peggy.
"Step forward, Hodge!" Peggy shouted out. Hodge then looked to his buddy on his right side and smirked while walking forward.
Marilyn watched from the sideline in awe and wonder as Peggy called out with such confidence. She noticed the man from before with the clipboards was now handing them out to all the soldiers in the line.
"Put your right foot forward," Peggy said.
Hodge looked down for a second as he placed his right foot in front of his left.
"Mmm... We gonna wrassle? Cause I got a few moves I know you'll like," Hodge spoke out with a wink.
Suddenly, Peggy's fist connected with Hodge's face in a bone-breaking punch. Marilyn gawked as Peggy did this. Peggy shook her hand to relieve the pain as Hodge fell to the ground harshly. Marilyn stood next to Peggy with her hands placed behind her back nervously as the sound of another car drove up. Her neck grew chills as she felt the presence of another person behind her.
"Agent Carter, Recruiter Johnson!" a man's voice called out.
Marilyn and Peggy quickly turned around to see an older man with an army uniform on. On his head was a cap that was slightly lighter than the rest of his uniform.
"Colonel Phillips," Peggy called out.
Marilyn smiled politely at him as Colonel Phillips walked beside them. But she smiled extra wide when she saw Abraham walking alongside with him.
"I can see that you are breaking in the candidates. That's good," Phillips walked over to Hodge, who was lying in pain on the ground, and spoke to him curtly, "Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand on that line at attention till somebody comes and tells you what to do."
Hodge quickly stood up at Colonel Phillips voice and deepened his voice to say, "Yes, sir!"
Marilyn's gaze turned from Hodge's now bloody nose to the friendly man, Steve Rogers. Her mind was closed off as Colonel Phillips said to the new recruits.
"General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men..."
Marilyn turned to Phillips as his voice slowed. She trailed his gaze to see him staring at Steve Roger who was standing proud. Colonel Phillips quickly looked to Abraham and then back to the recruits when Abraham nodded softly.
"And because they're gonna get better. Much better." Colonel Phillips walked down the line of recruits, Steve's eyes trailing him. "The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week, we will choose that man. This is why, Marilyn Johnson," Colonel Phillips looked over to the surprised woman, "is here. She will be here finding out the best and brightest of this division. And he will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers. And they will personally escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of hell."
Marilyn stood, waiting for the line to be dismissed when they did, Marilyn immediately went over to Abraham.
"I thought I wasn't going to see you until I found someone, " Marilyn said to Abraham.
The older man said, "I thought maybe you'd miss me too much."
Marilyn smiled sweetly took a few more steps forward to him and wrapped her arms around him. Her hands came to rest on his shoulders as his hands wrapped around her. After a few moments, Marilyn released her grip on him and shuffled her feet back.
"I better get going... I do have a candidate to find after all," Marilyn spoke softly to Abraham.
"Yes, go do that," Abraham spoke with a smile.
