The Boys
"So, this dummy decides to take Dad's rum, knock it back and fell asleep underneath that same tree!" Cooper laughed as he pointed at Jason, "Man, Dad was so mad, but he was more worried because J was only like 12."
Jason chewed slowly, shaking his head before responding, "I wanted to see why Dad liked rum so much. He rarely drank around us, but the one time he did that I could remember it was rum!"
Donovan sighed, "And Bryce was always the one who had to clean up the messes. I guess that's what he got for being the oldest."
Bryce rolled his eyes, his gaze catching his dad's, "Yep, but I didn't mind. Dad told me I had to keep these two turds in line so I was glad to do it."
"Turds?" Cooper scoffed, "That's no way to speak in front of a lady."
Delilah smiled, "Oh, I have four kids under the age of 14 so turd is a word I hear quite often."
"Dad never let us use that or fart," Jason sighed, "We're going to go live with you, Miss D."
"Adopt us!" Cooper joked, taking a mouthful of Yumsetti, "This is really good. I don't think we've ever had it."
Donovan shook his head, "Not from me, but it is absolutely delicious."
"Well, thank you, but this Shepherd's Pie is the best," Delilah said.
"Yeah, but we've had this Shepherd's Pie," Bryce waved his hand around, "Yumsetti wins."
Donovan wasn't even hurt. He knew the boys would choose Delilah's dish regardless if they liked it or not, but his boys cleaned their plates which indicated that this would become a staple in the household.
"I can leave your dad the recipe," Delilah told them, "It's pretty simple."
Cooper smiled, "Why can't we just get you to make it when you come visit?"
Delilah blushed, "Oh, I don't...I don't really know how often I'll visit."
Jason smirked, "Then I guess we'll have to come visit you. I hear a certain young man is getting a drum set?"
Delilah beamed, "Oh, yes! My son plays the drums. I appreciate the three of you coming all the way to my home to deliver it."
"It's not a problem," Cooper said, "We like going into Salem every now and then. Do you have a time you'd like us to be there? We'll probably head down Thursday."
Delilah remembered that Donovan would be gone by then—long gone to Dubai.
"The afternoon? Unless that's too late?" Delilah asked, "I get out of work around four."
"That's perfect," Jason told her, "Is that your phone buzzing?"
Delilah scowled, "Yes...it's work. I'm so sorry.."
"Answer it," Bryce said, "We'll get the dessert ready."
Delilah hesitated, but then smiled and thanked them, answering the call from Millie and exiting the room.
"So, what did you want to tell us?" Bryce asked, leaning forward, "Something about some douche bag named Brett?"
Donovan wiped his chin as his boys leaned in.
"Brett is her ex dick wad," Donovan told them, "Les busted his knee caps last week."
"Oh, that dick wad!"Bryce grimaced, "He's already on my shit list. What type of man hits a woman?"
"Not a man," Cooper mumbled, "Can we just pay him a visit?"
"We won't hurt him.." Jason said, "Much.."
Donovan shook his head, "As much as I'd like the guy to suffer immeasurably, he's still got four kids to help look after and I don't want my kids in jail. I just want you three to keep an eye on them while I'm gone."
"Well, we can't guarantee nothing won't happen if we just chance upon him in Salem," Jason cracked his knuckles, "But we'll take care of her and those kids."
"Thanks, boys.." Donovan smiled, "She's a good one."
Bryce nodded, "You really like her, don't you?"
Donovan raised a shoulder, but he grinned, "I think I really do, Bry."
"Well, she seems like a keeper to me," Cooper said, "She's the last?"
Donovan sighed, "She's the last."
"Well, good because Bryce has a little treat for you," Jason narrowed his eyes.
"You fuck.." Bryce rolled his eyes, muttering to himself as Donovan turned to him, "It's nothing. I don't have any treats."
"What is it?" Donovan demanded, "Are you in trouble?"
"No, Dad, I'm not in trouble," Bryce glared at his brother, "It's not like that."
Cooper kept his head down as they heard Delilah speaking softly in the other room.
"Tell me, dammit!" Donovan huffed, "I'll be worried all fucking night."
"I was going to tell you on MY OWN TIME," Bryce raised his voice, slightly, "But seeing as how Jason is an asshole, I guess I won't wait. I've chosen."
Donovan leaned back and crossed his arms over his chest, "And?"
"And I started it already."
"When? With who?" Donovan asked, "Is it someone you know?"
"Shelby," Bryce said, "She said she was alright with it and we're just practicing."
"Shelby.." Donovan thought about it, "Are you talking about Les's daughter?"
Jason laughed, "He sure as hell is."
"Bryce.." Donovan shook his head, "I know she's an adult.."
"Which means she can make up her own mind," Bryce said, "Besides, Les can't keep her locked away forever."
"He will if he knows you're screwing his daughter," Cooper chuckled.
"How many have you had?" Donovan asked.
"Dad.."
"How...many..?" Donovan repeated, "I am only looking out for you. It's a risky business and I want to make sure you're safe. You're 22 years old and I can't tell you no anymore."
"A few times, but Shelby enjoys it so she's my go-to," Bryce said, "I have..a couple of girls lined up, but I'm safe, Dad, I swear."
Donovan knew that at least one of his boys would go into the profession, but looking at Cooper and Jason, he wondered if they would, too.
"Anyway, I was going to tell you on my own terms, but this idiot happened—as usual," Bryce flipped off Jason who laughed and threw a napkin at him.
"Come on," Jason sighed, "Let's get dessert."
"Dessert?" Delilah smiled, walking back in to the dining room, "I hope you like apple pie."
Cooper smiled at his father as he watched Donovan ogle Delilah as she settled back down next to him at the table.
"Oh, we all like pie around here, Miss Delilah.."
