Breathless
"Baby? Oh, honey, I wish I could have one more baby.. even at my age," Delilah sighed, "It's just not possible."
Julie cringed, "But it's very possible, Aunt Delilah. You could be a rare case You could, -"
"Ladies," Donovan watched as Delilah closed up the peanut butter, clipping the chip bag closed, "Everything alright in here?"
Delilah smiled, "Perfect. Just going back to bed soon."
Jason yawned as he stepped into the kitchen, "Are we having a meeting?"
Donovan shook his head,"I think the meeting ended."
Jason, with his eyes still half closed, nodded sleepily and escorted Julie out of her kitchen, with the young woman glancing back one last time at her aunt.
"You're feeling better?"
Delilah allowed Donovan to lead her out of the kitchen, a juice in one hand, a bottle of antacids in the other.
"Ughh, I'm going to go brush my teeth," she announced,"Keep my spot warm."
Donovan smiled as she reentered the room and she curled up in his arms.
"You've made me the happiest man in the world, Delilah. I don't care that it's barely been a year that we've known each other. I know that you're the one for me, my eternity."
"I wish.. I kinda hate wishing my life away, I suppose, but... I..." Delilah felt so silly saying it so she stepped around it, "Did you and Melanie want more children?"
"Oh, yes. I think I told you, maybe I didn't, that we tried for a girl after Cooper was born. Of course, I love my son's with every fiber of my being, but you know how it goes. We just couldn't conceive anymore."
Delilah sniffled. She didn't know why her emotions were all over the place. Blaming it on hormones, she retreated into him some more.
"Well, my girls love you if that's alright."
Donovan smiled,"That's more than good enough because I love them, too.."
Before he could say another word, Delilah's adorable little snores tickled his ears.
"I wish we could have had a baby, too, Del..." he whispered before shutting out the world around them.
*********
The next few days were filled with adventure after adventure, both Delilah and Donovan marking off everything on the list, and adding on to anything the children wanted to do.
"Oh, Aunt Delilah! He got you a dress for the opera?! And diamonds?!"
She lifted up the bracelet she necklace set Donovan had purchased right before their arrival in Dubai.
Delilah gazed thoughtfully at the beautiful blue evening gown splayed out on the bed. She was in awe that Donovan knew her so well... in such a short time.
"It's gorgeous, right? I wish you two could go, but Jason has enjoyed spoiling you, hasn't he?" Delilah winked at Julie who blushed and giggled like a school girl.
Julie nodded, "It's been fun."
Delilah smiled. She thought all Donovan was going to be was fun and now? Now he was the love of her life.
"Phantom of the Opera, huh?" Julie asked, "I'd say it was cliche, but I absolutely love that that's what is playing."
"Same! Now, after the concert, Donnie and I will be on the yacht, but you can see it from the beach. Might even wave to ya!"
Julie laughed, "And then it's your birthday!"
Delilah sighed, "Ya know what's amazing? I don't even feel 41."
Julie knew Donovan had a lot to do with that and she adored him for it.
When he showed up later with a dashing suit on, even the kids were highly impressed.
"Picture time!" Julie snapped some candid shots and then a nice one of Delilah and Donovan together.
"Now, go!" Jason ushered them out of the hotel room, "Just text when you're at the yacht, alright?"
"Who's the adult here?" Donovan teased.
Julie put her hands on her hips and scowled.
"We'll send a search party."
"Yes ma'am! I will text!"
As the night progressed, Delilah and Donovan enjoyed the opera and some fine dining.
"I am hooked on the opera, Donnie! I could have stayed for all of the shows!"
Donovan enjoyed hearing that from her. He planned on giving her the world. Watching her face light up the entire time at the opera house made him giddy.
Venturing out to a different yacht than before, they thanked the Delilah took notice of her belongings already there, thanks to Julie.
"They are such wonderful kids, aren't they? I've already texted Julie," She looked around, "No Merrill?"
Donovan shook his head, "This is my yacht, Del. I decided to get it out for the night and captain it myself."
"And what else are you going to captain tonight, Mr. Dixon?"
Donovan eyed her with a lustful gaze, licking his lips as the dress he'd picked out for her accentuated her luscious hips.
"Champagne?"
"Maybe just a little," Delilah thought about her stomach issues earlier and didn't want to ruin the night.
As Donovan poured the champagne, his hands were unsteady, knees weak and the sweat was already forming on his brow.
"To us," he saluted, "To the love of my life."
Delilah lifted her glass and beamed from ear to ear.
"To my king... the love of my life," she said, taking the smallest sip possible.
She and Donovan gazed out at the Dubai coast, with silence dancing between them.
Life was good and the moment was perfect.
As stars twinkled above them and light waves slapped the side of the yacht, Donovan felt into his pocket for the small velvet box.
"Delilah.."
"Hmm?" Delilah's heart fluttered when Donovan moved closer, but instead of him ravishing her as expected, he proceeded to get down on one knee in front of her, the little red, velvet box coming into view.
With wide eyes, Delilah gasped, knowing already what was happening, but it was still so much like being in a dream.
"Delilah Rivers, from the moment I met you I knew I had to have you. Maybe I thought it was going to be a fling, maybe I thought I could let you go.. my last one, my chosen diamond in the rough. I couldn't let you go after that first meeting with you at your house— and I've watched the weather channel every day since then."
Delilah laughed, even though happy tears streamed down her cheeks.
"I think about you every waking second, dreaming of you, hating the moments we're not together. I didn't think I'd start over, but you make me happy, you make me smile, you make me want to live again, Del. My queen..."
He opened the box, presenting to her a silver band with little carats of garnet and topaz, their birthstones intertwined.
"I love you so much, Delilah, more than I could ever put into words," his voice was shaky and no other women had ever had this effect on him.
"Will you do me the incredible honor of becoming my wife?"
