Chapter 5:

Miku's POV:

Naturally after the incident we decided it would be wisest to head home. I was pretty pissed about my day off being such a bust, but I was more concerned about that weird kid.
Had he recognized me through my disguise? Who was he? His blank lifeless stare continually edged its way to the front of my thoughts. What I didn't like the most was that he had taken a picture of us. That could be very dangerous.

My mom was waiting just inside the door, and probably had been since I left the house. She gave me the biggest hug when I walked inside. "Oh thank goodness! I was so worried! How was the park? Did you have fun with your friends?"

"Yeah, a lot of fun-" I smiled.

"I'm so glad. Your father has quite a few meetings today, so he'll be running late. We can have dinner and a girls night."

"That sounds like a lot of fun, mom. Let me know when dinner's ready?" I went to my room and flopped onto my bed.
Mom and dad essentially quit the agency shortly after everything that went down with the claim they wanted to live normal lives. To be honest, I have no idea what they're doing with their lives now. Whatever it is, they're doing better than me. At Kamen I always had orders to carry out, while I was active at Shika there was always something to do; but now...
It's starting to look like I'll be cursed to spend my life bored and working at McChicken.

"Miku! Dinner!"

Mom's the best. She made just a ton of my favorite things, not to mention a snack for while we watched a movie.

"Hey mom, was it easy for you to quit being a spy?" I asked during a boring part.

She looked at me thoughtfully. "Hm...well...for me it was easier because I want to spend my life being a mother, and to lower the risk of us being separated again. For your father it was a bit harder since he needs to constantly be working. He hates being stuck in an office. Why the curiosity?"

"It's just...I feel kind of like I'm not even a spy anymore. Mr. Kagamine never lets any of us do anything and I'm always bored."

"Mr. Kagamine is just trying to keep you all safe. He cares more about you and his children so it's harder for him to let you go out on dangerous missions."

"You would think what I did would have been proof enough for him to see we're responsible enough for the dangerous missions. I mean Len and I took down a whole base!"

"Which was extremely risky. What if you hadn't made it out on time? What if that Meito boy had shot one of you? I'm still scared to let you leave my sight."

I sighed.

"But, you're a Hatsune. You're strong, brave, and very smart. So it makes it easier on my conscious. Let's hope something exciting happens for you soon. Who knows, maybe Len will finally officially ask you out."

"Mom-" I groaned.

She laughed and squeezed me in a comfortable hug before getting up to clean the kitchen. I turned my attention to the end credits and prayed something eventful would happen soon.

Another boring day spent loitering in the VR room punching a bunch of imitation goons. I had all the levels and set ups memorized at this point so it was ridiculously easy, like going back and fighting a boss in a video game for the tenth time. Out of the corner of my eye I caught something flying at me. That wasn't part of the level I was doing-

I ducked as the unidentified object flew over my head. Quickly I leapt up and scanned the area around me. Three virtual goons stood where they were supposed to. Someone real grabbed my shoulder. Grabbing the hand, I threw them over my shoulder.
Len landed perfectly on his feet and directed a roundhouse towards my face. I ducked that as well coming up just as he shot his fist towards my face. I whirled past him, spinning to get my own punch in. He caught my fist and I caught his. The VR simulation shut down when a goon shot me in the back.

I fixed my hair and tried to ease my breathing. For once I had actually worked up a sweat. "What was that about?"

Len shrugged. "Did you expect that?"

"No-"

"Then you're welcome."

I shook my head, trying to keep a smile off my face. "Thanks?"

"Now that practice is over, let's go grab a coffee or something." He led me out of the VR room and down the hall.

"If you "go grab" something every day after practice you're going to go broke." I pointed out.

He shrugged again. "Maybe. Maybe not. So, coffee?"

"Oh absolutely."

With a grin, Len led me through the garage and out the secret tunnel. We walked down the sidewalk, into town, and to a small coffee shop. It was pretty cute, and way overpriced, but worth it. The coffee was great.

"So no cycle today?" I wondered as I sipped my iced coffee beverage.

Len got one of his many annoyed looks. "No. My dad "confiscated" the key since I'm not responsible enough to own a bike."

"Ooh, sorry-" Although secretly I did agree with the fact that Len wasn't the most responsible driver out there...

"He's getting worse and worse. Everything has restrictions, and normally I could complain to my mom but he knows I can't about the spy stuff."

"That sucks."

"Yeah, I wish he was as lenient as your parents."

I laughed a little. "My parents are just weird with the things they're restrictive about, like-" I stopped mid sentence because I got the sense that Len wasn't really listening to me. He kept looking past me and finally my curiosity got the better of me. I started to turn my head to see what he was looking at.

"Don't turn around." He commanded in a hushed tone.

I froze and rigidly straightened myself. "...Like I'm not allowed on my phone after eleven, but I can stay up as long as I want."

Len replied all smiles. "Hah, yeah that's pretty bizarre."

I was so confused but I kept blabbing on. A few minutes went by, I heard a click and the coffee shop door open and close. Len visibly relaxed.

"What was it?" I asked quietly.

He looked directly at me. "That camera kid."

It looks like I got my wish. Something weird is definitely going on.
