Chapter 27

Taco and Leafy's footsteps slightly echoed as they made their way down the hall. The liquid from the pipes had only pooled past a certain point, as the rest of the hall was dry.

Taco was on edge, nervously looking up on occasion. She didn't want to be caught off-guard by the strange ribbons again.

Suddenly a bright light stunned Taco, and she covered her eyes. She stood protectively in front of her girlfriend, bracing for a potential attack. However, nothing hit her.

"...Taco?"

Hesitantly uncovering her eyes, Taco was surprised to see Book in front of her, flashlight in hand. She stared at her with a worried look. "Did you find Leafy?" She asked.

Taco gently pulled Leafy around, nodding. "Yeah, where are the others?" She asked. That was when she noticed Pin beside Book.

A nervous look was on her face as she kept glancing at Leafy. Once again, Taco stood protectively in front of Leafy. "Everyone is wandering around this place."

Book avoided Taco's eyes. "Four never gave us anything to call everyone back...what do we do?" She mumbled. Taco instinctively scanned the room while Book thought.

This gave Pin enough time to get closer to Leafy. She was silent for a moment. Leafy flinched when she noticed her. "Oh. Pin!" She started, nervously smiling.

Oozing slightly, Pin sheepishly rubbed the back of her head. "Leafy..." She managed to muster out. Once again, silence fell on the two.

Neither of them could make eye contact with each other, and Pin was starting to regret her choice of talking to her. What was she supposed to say? 'Sorry'?

Would an apology even fix anything? Would it even make her feel better? Pin had a growing suspicion that it wouldn't. Taco's words suddenly brought her back to reality.

"We need to keep an eye out for any more pipes." She said, as Pin glanced at her in confusion. "If we break them, it could weaken the Firey doll."

Leafy tensed, clenching her fists. "I understand you all don't want to talk to him," she started, "but please don't hurt him!" Pin looked at her, sympathy on her face.

Before she could put a hand on her shoulder, Taco beat her to it. Taco had a frown on her face, as she hugged Leafy. "I don't want to hurt him." She admit.

"But he isn't letting you go without a fight." Pin glanced down, taking one step back as she held her arm in her hand. The unusual, but familiar, feeling was back.

Pin turned away from the couple, unnoticed by the group. "I just want to get you home safely." Pin covered her ears as she grit her teeth.

However, she could still hear their conversation. "And I promise I won't throw myself into danger," Leafy said in a pleading tone, "but please reconsider talking things through..."

Taco sighed, and Pin could only assume she shook her head. She couldn't bear to be in the room anymore. "I'm going to look for the others."

The three turned to look at her. "Pin, it's probably not a good idea to split up." Book said with concern in her voice. Pin glanced back at her, and noticed Book's expression change.

A look of worry was now on her face, as Pin blinked in confusion. "What?" She asked, as Book walked over to her. "Have you been crying...?"

That question caught Pin off-guard. She froze, silent. Then, she rose her hands up to the bottom of her eyes, using her thumb to wipe away something wet.

Tears.

Pin shook her head slightly in confusion. Had she really been crying? "I guess the stress of the situation is getting to me..." She mumbled, slight confusion in her voice.

She didn't understand why she would have been crying. Taco gave her a look of empathy. "Trust me, this situation would make anyone cry." She smiled.

"Let's get this over with." Gently grabbing Leafy's hand, Taco started to lead the way. Book nodded, grabbing Pin's hand and following along with her.

The four of them kept an eye out for any of the others, hoping the plush hadn't killed them already. Although, it wasn't likely, at least that's what they hoped.

Pin nervously glanced around, suddenly feeling like she was being watched. However, there were no signs that anyone was around them.

After a long while of walking, the group realized they had made it to the front door. Taco frowned slightly, turning to look at Book and Pin.

"You're not gonna believe this." Taco said, unknowingly letting go of Leafy's hand. Book and Pin glanced at each other, before they gasped as Taco moved aside.

There were chains wrapped around the handles of the door...

The three nervously exchanged looks. "What do we do now?" Book mumbled, as Taco crossed her arms, closing her eyes in thought. "Bolt cutters, maybe?"

Book shook her head. "That would be too easy, I doubt this thing has any lying around." Leafy flinched at her word choice, only being noticed by Pin.

Pin frowned slightly, turning away from the group. "I'll just go find Four." She said. "As much of a bad idea it is to split up, one of us has to go get the others."

Before Book could protest, Pin walked up the stairs, leaving Book alone with the couple. After a few minutes, Book no longer felt very calm.

Everything she had done to Taco flashed in the back of her mind, leaving her feeling guilty. Maybe it was time to admit her mistake.

She turned around, glancing nervously at Taco. "...So..." She started. "You're dating Leafy?" Taco blinked in confusion. "Yeah? I mean..." Taco chuckled.

"It's pretty obvious, as of now." Book felt awkward. "Right...you...uh...make a cute couple?" She tried to compliment, shrugging.

Taco turned to Leafy, smiling. "Thanks." She said, before facing Book. "You're not still on my case about the whole 'abandoning' thing, are you?" She asked.

Book flinched, nervously waving her hands. "Oh, nonono!" She quickly said. "I just...well..." She looked away. "It just got a little...awkward after Pin left..."

Taco chuckled. "Ah, okay." Leafy tilted her head slightly at the two. "So...you're Book?" She asked, as Book nodded. "Yeah...I guess Taco told you all about our...'team'."

It was Leafy's turn to nod. "She did." Silence fell on the three. Only Leafy and Book could feel the awkward tension. Taco was unaffected.

"Listen, Taco-" Taco stopped Book mid-sentence. "We can talk about everything that happened after this is over." She said. "I know you're sorry, but we need to stay focused."

Book shrank back slightly in surprise. She had never seen Taco this serious before. Taco smiled, holding out her hand towards Book.

"Let's just focus on getting out of this hell-hole, then we can try to make things right." She said, as Book smiled back. Nodding, Book gently grabbed Taco's hand, shaking it.
